Nightgowns Are Trending — Here’s Why

First there was “Renegade” and Dalgona coffee. Then, it was whipped Nutella and Megan Thee Stallion’s #SavageChallenge. But of all the topics creating buzz on TikTok these days, it’s the nightgown trend that we care about most. Upon searching #nightgown on the beloved Gen Z platform — a keyword that’s garnered 832k searches thus far — you’ll be met with a slew of results, from one user’s growing collection of ‘50s-era vintage nightgowns to another’s shock that women used to sleep in dresses of all things.

That’s not to say that sleepwear has made a comeback recently thanks only to TikTok. Since 2018, nightgowns took a fashion-forward turn in the design department, with many brands like Sleeper, Loup Charmant, and Skin creating silhouettes suited for both inside and outside wear. Even so, now that the nightgown trend has TikTok’s stamp of approval, it’s safe to say that the age of the nightie has officially hit its peak.

Not convinced? Just take a scroll through the other popular social media feed: Instagram. These days, one post after another features a pajama dress in some form, from silky slips to prairie-style linen frocks. In some, wearers can be seen styling their nightgowns as if they’re going out into the real world with bike shorts underneath and Teva-like sandals, while others are pairing their PJs with cozy home socks or fuzzy slippers

So, to help our favorite TikTok trend hit “Renegade”-level fame, we’re taking it cross-platform and rounding up the all-time best bedtime looks on Instagram. Oh, and in the not-so-rare case that you end up feeling inspired to post yourself, we threw in some shoppable options, too.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

The Fashion Set’s New Favorite Summer Shoe Is Definitely Not What You Expect

If we had to nominate a single fit to represent summer 2020, based on our close observation of the Fashion Side Of Instagram, the following would be a strong contender: a cropped, short-sleeve cardigan in lavender or slime green; jeans cut to fall somewhere close to "ironically bootleg"; floppy headgear, probably of the printed bucket persuasion; and a sandal you might've worn in the past — without realizing just how versatile it can be.

That last element is where REEF's Cushion collection comes in, combining a thicker-soled silhouette that's all the rage among style influencers with a high-energy rebound footbed that provides support with every step. They're definitely not just for pairing with the aforementioned S/S '20 look, either — ahead, see every style in the Cushion range, along with some ideas for where and how to wear the fashion set's new favorite shoe.
She's beauty and she's grace, with generous arch support, a lightweight vegan leather construction, and the shape of the season. All this makes the Court an ideal complement to every WFH fit, like the cashmere co-ords you put on when you want to pretend you're a celebrity going for a coffee run (remember those?).

Here, the Slim appears in a neutral colorway, which would go as well with a mixed-print swimsuit or a suit suit of the blazer-and-trousers variety. Now that's what we call business casual.

Picture this: you, wearing the double-strap Vista and a ruched sundress, weaving through a picturesque, socially distanced farmers' market like you're guest-starring in a sitcom musical episode.

The high-rise version of the Vista has a cushy 100%-natural cork footbed cover and big "I want to wear these and only these" energy.

With an espadrille-inspired design, the Sol calls for two things: 1) a wide-open weekend schedule and 2) an all-white-linen look à la retirees in films with extremely flattering lighting.

This Iconic Clueless Look Is A Quarantine Style Favorite

The heart baby tee made famous by Brittany Murphy’s character Tai in Clueless is once again making the rounds, this time as the quarantine style favorite seen on Instagram feeds everywhere.

Since the cult film’s 1995 debut, there have been countless outfit recreations: Cher’s yellow plaid skirt suit, Dion’s over-the-top hats, and Tai’s tie-dyed heart baby tee. Where did everyone buy the latter from? A beloved brand, known in the ‘90s as Tease Tees, created by stylist Linda Meltzer. The fashion line, which Meltzer started two years prior to the release of Clueless, was already revered by A-listers like Drew Barrymore and Naomi Campbell. It was when the film made its way onto the big screen, though, that Tease Tees’ popularity skyrocketed.

According to Vogue, Mona May, the costume designer for the film, didn’t actually source the T-shirt design from Meltzer, who first created the shirt based on a Grateful Dead band tee she owned. Even so, following its release, every teenage girl and her crew of Clueless obsesses wanted to get their hands on a Tease Tees shirt. Eventually, Meltzer, whose brand has since been re-named Pretties, stopped producing the style. That is, until two years ago, when she released a re-issue.

Fast-forward to now, two years after the re-issue caused every nostalgic 20-something to post a #throwback photo in Tai’s baby tee. It’s 2020, and we’re all quarantining at home, trying to entertain ourselves in whatever ways we can, which, yes, includes re-watching our favorite ‘90s movies like Clueless. Just like the first time, we’re drawn into the world (and revolving closets) of Cher, Dionne, and Tai — and the latter’s iconic heart tee style.

Over the last five weeks of quarantine, we’ve spotted the T-shirt — in a long-sleeved version and the original short-sleeved edition — all over Instagram. Step aside matching sweatsuits, the baby tee has officially become the It item of quarantine.

And luckily, since Pretties is still open to online orders, you can still get your hands on the baby tee. See how it’s being styled and shop the trend for yourself, below.

9 Latinx Fashion Designers You Should Follow Now

Today, there are roughly 60 million Latinx people living in the U.S. — each one of us with our own unique cultural experiences and points of view. We are launching Somos, a cross-platform channel created in collaboration with the Latinx staff at Refinery29. We seek to elevate, educate, and inspire a new generation of changemakers committed to Latinx visibility. We’ll explore the unique issues that affect us and dive into the parallels and contrasts that make our community so rich‚ all while celebrating nuestras culturas.

Latin America has never been recognized as an international fashion hotspot, yet the contributions the Latinx community has made to the global clothing industry can’t be overstated. Veteran designers like the late Oscar de la Renta have made an invaluable impact on the world of high fashion, while the everyday styles of the Latinx community continue to influence the way others dress, for better or worse

To be clear, Latinx representation is on the rise in fashion, not only front row at Fashion Week (who could forget Cardi B’s first encounter with Anna Wintour?), but behind the scenes. As social media brings us all closer together, more and more Latinx fashion designers are becoming serious power players in the industry. These up-and-comers don’t conform to any singular notion of what a Latinx designer should create. Some gravitate toward an abstract, artistic vision; others look to their heritage as a primary source of inspiration. Others, still, use their craft to deconstruct the taboos of their culture while embracing the aspects of Latinidad they cherish most. Keep reading to learn about the nine Latinx designers who absolutely need to be on your radar.

Elena Velez

There’s a reason Elena Velez was named one of Teen Vogue’s Generation Next fashion designers. A Milwaukee native of Puerto Rican descent, Velez graduated from Parsons School of Design just last year, but she’s already dressed the likes of Charli XCX and Kali Uchis. Her uniquely structural designs offer a fresh interpretation of femininity, drawing inspiration from her mother’s job as a ship captain and creating garments with repurposed boat covers, ship steel, and line.

Iván Ávalos

As seen on Mexican superstars Paulina Goto, Danna Paola, and Bárbara Islas, MX-based designer Iván Ávalos’s voluminous dresses look like they were plucked straight from a modern fairytale. Beyond all the tulle and ruffles, Ávalos also makes some stunning separates, like this chic pantsuit with ruching details and knitwear that could easily take you from date night to a chill day in la sala.

Raul Lopez, LUAR

A cofounder of the now-defunct clothing label Hood By Air, Dominican designer Raul Lopez debuted his first collection for LUAR in September 2018. His androgynous garments have since been worn by Solange and Rihanna. In an interview with The Cut, Lopez notes that his upbringing as a queer Latino in New York City has greatly influenced his designs, which experiment with texture and seldom stray from a neutral color palette.

Simonett Pereira, Simonett

Born in Venezuela and raised in Miami, Simonette Pereira is the up-and-coming designer on every Instagram it-girl’s radar. Simonett creates super wearable clothing in a range of vibrant colors, prints, and textures. But the beautifully constructed garments don’t just look good; on her website, Pereira provides fully transparent information about Simonett’s supply chain to ensure shoppers know how and where their clothes are being made.

Bárbara Sánchez-Kane, Sánchez-Kane

Bárbara Sánchez-Kane’s Mexico City-based label acknowledges the gender stereotypes embedded within Latinx culture — and turns them on their head. The result is a collection of garments that breaks the heteronormative mold while paying homage to the beauty of Mexican tradition; think buff male bodies in satiny dresses featuring iconography of la Virgen de Guadalupe. Trust us when we say Sánchez-Kane’s Instagram is about to take you on the ride of your life.

Ana María Guiulfo, Ana G

Ana María Guiulfo’s hand-painted clothing is nothing short of sheer artistry. The Peruvian designer has been showing collections for Ana G in Lima and Miami since 2005. Every season, Ana G’s garments boast an assemblage of one-of-a-kind patterns inspired by Guiulfo’s travels and passion for her home country. As if she weren’t cool enough, Guiulfo also helms a charitable organization called Aprendamos Juntos (“We Learn Together” in English), which aims to grant disadvantaged Peruvian children access to a quality education.

Roberto Sánchez

It’s no coincidence that cool-kid fashion destination Opening Ceremony chose to feature Roberto Sánchez in their Year of Mexico initiative. The Mexican designer’s eccentric clothes are like nothing else on the market, having been worn by big names including Bad Bunny, Charli XCX, and even CGI influencer Lil Miquela. Sánchez’s design philosophy is reminiscent of the 1980s in the best way possible, full of neon fabrics, deconstructed denim, and party dresses to die for, like this one-shoulder zebra number.

Pavo Wong, Pink Magnolia

Pink Magnolia has all the makings of a girly-girl’s dream wardrobe. Helmed by Mexican designer Pavo Wong, the brand’s Instagram profile is a wonderland of pink, peach, and golden textiles taking the form of tea-length dresses, matching sets, and lace-trimmed caftans. Fair warning, though: One look at Wong’s fun-loving designs could leave you yearning for a day at the beach.

Vanessa Acosta, Wasi

Wasi’s stunning Frida Kahlo sets might be one of the few uses of her image the anti-capitalist artist would have approved of. Bolivian-American designer Vanessa Acosta runs her brand out of Los Angeles, and we’re thrilled to report that many of her whimsical designs, like the aforementioned top-and-shorts combo, are actually pretty affordable. Plus, every garment is made-to-order by Acosta to mitigate the environment.
