Prabal Gurung x JCPenney Collab Features Sequins & Puff Sleeves — & Is Under $100

Ever since launching his eponymous brand in 2009, designer Prabal Gurung has focused on creating contemporary fashion that feels as powerful as it is effortless. With a knack for making a killer dress and a penchant for a bold color palette, the Nepal-born, New York-based designer is now ready to take his luxury label to the mass market with a new collaboration with JCPenney.

“I always want to invite people to my world through my clothes… and have a substantial conversation,” Gurung tells Refinery29. “Hopefully, they’ll understand that fashion and substance don’t need to be mutually exclusive.”

It’s this ethos that opened the designer to the idea of a collaboration with a retail giant like JCPenney that has previously launched partnerships with the likes of Halston and Duro Olowu. Titled “iMPOWER,” the collection is inspired by Gurung’s relationship with his mother and other women in his life: “All my life every instrumental monumental thing that has happened, it’s because of women,” he says.

Through 25 styles — all under $100 — Gurung laid out his vision for a spring-ready capsule wardrobe, from picnic-ready puff-sleeve dresses and work-appropriate wrap frockss to a black sequined cocktail dress and a black-and-white jumpsuit worthy of a wedding outing. Still, according to the designer, these aren’t occasion-specific garments: “I believe if you want to wear sequins early in the morning to get coffee, you should,” says Gurung, adding that he wants his customer to “unapologetically be yourself.”

Following collaborations with Etsy, American Girl, and Lane Bryant, Gurung says that bringing his clothes to JCPenney marks another chapter of his brand’s journey, especially when it comes to more inclusive sizing. (The collection ranges from XS to 3X.) While Gurung’s been championing diversity within the fashion industry for more than a decade, he feels there’s still a lot to be done, especially bringing fashion-forward, affordable, size-inclusive fashion to the mass market. “The change that we want to see in the industry is often at a snail pace,” he says. “I am hoping they [customers] understand that there are creatives who see them; it matters to me that people feel validated.”

JCPenney’s chief merchandising officer Michelle Wlazlo agrees: “It’s about access, it’s about inclusivity, but it’s beautiful fashion first and foremost an amazing quality at a great value,” she says.

The Prabal Gurung x JCPenney collaboration is now available on on JCPenney.com and in select JCPenney stores.

R29 Editors Review Harper Wilde’s Luxe & Comfy Intimates

Finding comfortable bras and breathable underwear can often be an agonizing process. A multitude of issues arise: If the bra cups fit well, then the straps are digging into your shoulders, and if the underwear waistband is smoothing, then the fabric is forming into a wedgie, and so on. On top of finding well-fitting bras and comfortable panties, sourcing affordable options is even more painstaking. For pieces that we wear on a regular basis — and are in a highly saturated market — finding inclusive and supportive intimates shouldn’t be such a hassle.

Harper Wilde is helping to solve this dilemma, offering comfortable and fairly priced basics, including bras, bralettes, and underwear. Each product is created with function and style in mind, and each one is receiving plenty of praise. While doom-scrolling on TikTok, you might’ve seen Harper Wilde’s best-selling Bliss Bralette go viral, and for good reason. This bra, like most of Harper Wilde’s pieces, is designed to “feel like you’re wearing nothing.”

With some hype and many positive reviews, R29’s shopping team decided to also put Harper Wilde’s intimates to the test. Our editors tried select pieces from the brand’s Luxe and Lounge collections.  If you’d also like to see how Harper Wilde’s wireless bras and smoothing underwear fit for yourself, you can enjoy 15% off your order with code REFINERY at checkout.

Luxe Mush Triangle Bralette in Pearl, $55

Karina Hoshikawa, Senior Writer

“This bralette has done what no bralette has succeeded in before: actually supporting my D-cup boobs. After hearing our affiliate director’s rave reviews of the Luxe bralette, I felt confident that it would come through for me, too. I opted for the Pearl colorway, which is giving major balletcore vibes, thanks to the pale champagne hue and wide, grosgrain-like band.

I didn’t know it was a unique predicament until I got professionally fitted for a bra, but it turns out that many brands don’t make bras for very petite folks who have ample bosoms. (My true bra size is a 30D.) I love bralettes for their comfort and style factor, but sometimes feel like they don’t love me back since I’m constantly bouncing around in ’em. I got Harper Wilde’s Luxe Mesh Triangle Bralette in an XS and was blown away at how it actually lifts and contours my chest so that I can wear whatever I want and still feel cute AF. One in every color, please!”

Luxe Mesh Highwaist Brief in Black, $18

Charlotte Lewis, Sex & Wellness Writer

“I have severe sensory issues when it comes to bras and undies. There’s always an elastic that’s too tight, or the straps dig in, or the legs pinch. Which is why I was shocked (and delighted) by the Luxe Mesh Triangle Bralette and the Luxe Mesh Highwaist Brief from Harper Wilde. There’s a reason the line is called ‘Luxe Sheer Comfort.’ It hits every mark and then some. The luxe sheer line is sexy without being over the top. It’s a basic bralette and panty set, but the mesh fabric (which I opted for classic black in size small) not only felt like expensive silk against my skin, but it had a peekaboo touch that was clearly meant to entice. So much so that my partner literally stopped immediately upon seeing me to have an impromptu midday make-out session with promises of more later. Which is exactly what that sheer fabric does. It has the promise of more, all while looking much more expensive than its $50 price tag.

Though the luxe and sheer parts of the line clearly performed, it was the set’s comfort that was the most surprising. As I wore the set through the day, I was shockingly impressed at how little I felt it on me. It was like a soft second skin. The bra doesn’t tug or pinch anywhere, and it felt supportive, even without underwire. Meanwhile, the panties were perfectly cut, cheeky without feeling like a wedgie and a smoothing waistband that didn’t dig into the skin of my stomach. Comfort, sex appeal, and luxury — this set really is that bitch.”

Lounge Rib Scoop Bralette in Clay, $42

Marshall Bright, Affiliate Editor

“As a longtime G cup, my bra problems are not what you might think. It’s actually fairly easy to track down a good underwire bra in a wide variety of styles. Finding a good bralette or workout bra — that’s the challenge. You might think a more stretchy, less structured bra would be easier to make work, but I run into two issues: racerback straps and a lack of support. Racerback straps make up nearly every kind of stretchy bra out there, and I get why: The lift is supportive and flattering. But it also digs into my shoulders and causes serious muscle aches. Then, there’s the support: Without a nice band, supportive straps, or moulded cups, a lot of bralettes just don’t do much on larger boobs. So I was genuinely thrilled that the Harper Wilde Lounge Bra was: 1. a comfortable scoop back and 2. actually full coverage while still being cute. It’s definitely more of an ‘around the house’ bra since it’s not really compressive enough for workouts, but it provided soft support for a day spent lounging around in my bathrobe. I followed the size guide and ordered an XL, which fit well, though I maybe could have gone a size up.

The Lounge Rib Boyshort underwear was also cute while still being full-coverage — I love a lingerie-ish set that you can actually keep on for hours. The underwear is definitely too high to wear under most bottoms, but I liked them for a cozy around-the-house option for when I don’t want to go commando. The next day, I tested the bra out running errands, and while it doesn’t really give you the silhouette of a wired bra, it worked fine under a baggy sweatshirt. I also ended the day with no aches and pains or uncomfortable digging. I’ll probably still stick to my few precious scoop-back sports bras for my errands, but this bralette is definitely a great for weekends (and, let’s be real, WFH) option that is way softer than a workout top. And it doesn’t hurt that the set is the right amount of cute and sexy, too.”

Lounge Rib Boyshort in Black, $15

Venus Wong, Senior Travel Writer

“Choosing the right bra has always been quite an agonizing process for me. I find underwire bras very taxing and restrictive to wear all day, but since I have a fuller chest, bralettes normally don’t give me enough support. Full disclosure: I also prefer a smoother, more covered-up silhouette, so it makes me feel self-conscious that sometimes, the outline of my nipples still show through my top when I wear a wireless bra made of a thinner material.

When I first opened my Harper & Wilde package, I was honestly a bit skeptical. Its bestselling Lounge Scoop Bralette is made with a stretchy ribbed knit fabric with a soft jersey lining. Both materials are on the thinner side, so I have a hard time imagining the bralette being sturdy enough to lift up my 34D bust. However, I was very happy to be proved wrong by the size medium piece. The scoop silhouette molded to my body seamlessly and gently held things in place. The material is also very breathable, so I didn’t get the dreaded ‘underboob sweat’ even when I was wading through a crowded subway car. I also like contrasting bands on some of the colorways (mine was a black and gray combo), and it looks so cute and cozy as a matching set with the Lounge Rib Boyshort. I was most impressed by the fact that the bra is able to ‘smooth out’ and center my breasts even without any bra inserts. I wore the bralette all day without feeling a grumpy urge to take it off, which is a first for me.”
