5 Tried-&-Tested Travel Outfits From R29 Editors

When you’re embarking on a trip, planning what outfit to wear while in transit may very well be the last thing on your mind. Sure, it’s understandable to spend all your time deliberating the best summer dresses for your vacation OOTD, or scouring the internet for cute low-back swimsuits to wear at the beach, but we firmly believe that a comfy yet chic travel outfit should be higher on your priority list.

Traveling in the right clothing can make or break an experience: A long-haul flight will feel that much less dreadful if you’re wearing something that keeps your body feeling ventilated yet warm and well-supported without being restrictive. If it helps you look put-together even after a bumpy flight or hours stuck in traffic? That’s almost as good as getting a free upgrade.

Ahead, we have polled five well-traveled R29 editors on their go-to travel outfits. Read ahead for five tried-and-tested recommendations to help you jet set with ease and style.

Charlotte Lewis, Sexual Health & Wellness Writer

“I’m the type of person who cannot stand seams, buttons, or rough fabrics, but during travel, my existing sensory sensitivities go wild the longer I sit. But flying while wearing pajamas is less than ideal, so it’s taken me literal years to perfect my go-to plane outfit: my favorite Athleta Salutation Stash 7/8 Tight ($109), the Wild Fable Short Sleeve Relaxed Fit Cropped T-Shirt ($7), and my go-to footwear, Keds’ Champion Sneaker ($30).

“I’ve found that if I wear all black and give a pop of color to the shoes, I still look polished enough to be seen out and about, but the clothes are perfectly comfortable. These Athleta leggings are a godsend. Not only do they have pockets (essential during travel!), but they are so soft and don’t feel like I’m being squished into a sausage casing. The cropped tee HP from Target is an affordable staple in my closet. It’s perfectly oversized and not too cropped, so I don’t have to worry about flashing anyone. Finishing it off with a comfy sneaker in a fun color (unfortunately, my fave sneakers are no longer avail but Keds makes a super similar one that are equally cute and comfortable), is the perfect way to balance out all the black. And, it’s easily layered with a sweatshirt, sweater, or jean jacket for those who get cold on the plane.”

Venus Wong, Senior Travel Writer

“I have the great fortune of going on frequent trips through my work as Refinery29’s resident travel writer, so I have my go-to airport outfit down to a T. Here’s a detailed breakdown from head to toe: When it comes to underwear while on the move, it’s wireless bras for me all the way. Harper Wilde’s Bliss Bralette ($45), gently supports my boobs without digging into my back and shoulders, and the buttery-soft microfiber fabric feels so good on my skin. My favorite travel top is Cozy Earth’s Model Crew Neck Tee ($95, but Refinery29 readers can get 30% off with code COZYREFINERY until the end of the year). I highly rate the brand’s eco-friendly modal material — it is breathable yet retains warmth, and the weave is pill-resistant and has a lovely drape.

“When it starts getting chilly on the plane after takeoff, I like to cover up with Quince’s SuperSoft Fleece Crew ($34.90). Believe me when I say that this is the coziest sweatshirt ever. The fleece lining is almost cuddlier than my favorite childhood blanket. I don’t like wearing leggings, so Lululemon’s Stretch High-Rise Cropped Pant ($98) is the travel pant I constantly reach for when I want to feel comfy and look polished. The Luxtreme fabric is great at wicking away moisture (including any accidental drinks spillage), and I love that the elastic waistband is padded with soft fabric.

“Finally, I complete my outfit with Kizik Madrid Sneakers ($99). The bouncy heel technology allows your feet to slip in and out of the shoe without ever having to use your hands, a godsend for going through TSA. If I’m going on a flight for longer than four hours, I’ll put on my SB SOX Compression Socks ($16.95) before heading for the airport. They have been amazing at improving my circulation and preventing muscle cramps.”

Marshall Bright, Affiliate Editor

“When I say this is my favorite travel outfit, I also mean that it is my only travel outfit. I wore it on a long-haul flight to Japan. I’ve worn it on the two-hour drive to my parent’s house. It’s so soft and comfy but still flattering — Summersalt’s Softest French Terry Joggers ($80, which are now on sale for $56), are just slim enough that they don’t feel bulky but aren’t clingy like leggings. The two-tone design on the Softest French Terry Pullover ($60 — on sale for $45.50) helps it feel a bit dresser than just a plain sweatshirt. I even wear them traveling in the summer because you never know how cold a plane will be, and while I won’t lay out on a beach in the set later, it’s light enough that I don’t immediately want to rip it off my body when I land.”

Karina Hoshikawa, Senior Writer

“There was a time when air travel was a veritable occasion — one that people got dressed up for in top hats and three-piece suiting. While I’m not totally saying we need to go back to that, I’m all for elevated comfort — and IMHO, I think this ensemble nails it. I love this lightweight, breathable Stretch Recycled-Jersey Jumpsuit ($100) from Girlfriend Collective because it’s a one-and-done instant outfit, and because I get cold on planes, I pair it with my trusty Levi’s Original Trucker Jacket ($79.99). Lastly, a pair of cool, comfortable sneakers to support your feet during your journey. (I swear by my ON Cloudmonsters ($169.95), which are also great for when you need to book it to your gate before the final boarding call.)”

Becca Sax, Affiliate Coordinator

“No matter what mode of transportation, I will always fall asleep. Thus, it’s essential that my travel fit is comfortable. As a day-one fan of Girlfriend Collective, I love its leggings, so naturally, a set from the brand — Paloma Racerback Bra ($46) paired with the FLOAT Ultralight Legging ($78) — is my favorite travel fit. It’s layer-able and perfectly breathable for snoozing, as someone who likes to sleep naked. Nike’s White Air Forces ($110) are the perfect shoe for traveling, as I can dress them up or down for any occasion and they’re comfortable.”

Upgrade Your Home With Cozy Earths Best-Selling Items & Get 30% Off

Allow us to open the gateway to luxury living by introducing you to one of our favorite brands: Cozy Earth. The lavish brand offers everything from elevated matching pajamas to super-soft bedding and bath essentials to chic, minimalistic loungewear. If you’re ready to seriously up your sleeping game and overall lifestyle, then dive into the world of luxury with Cozy Earth’s Fourth of July sale. Buckle your seat belts and get ready for the most glorious home upgrade of your life. The brand’s Fourth of July sale covers 20-25% off sitewide until July 11. However, we’re here to bring you even better news. Cozy Earth is offering 30% off sitewide for the rest of the year just for Refinery29 readers with code COZYREFINERY. Now, you can relax and shop to your heart’s content without worrying about a deadline. After all, a good night’s rest and a peaceful home are well worth the investment — and Cozy Earth’s products might just be the easiest way to kick-start your journey to better sleep

Of course, it’s easy to question whether or not investing in admittedly pricey pajamas, bedding, and even bath towels is worth it. For the skeptics, I’m here to declare that it 100% is. Not only are Cozy Earth’s products high quality, but they’re also made from sustainably sourced materials like bamboo that’ll last you for years. Even Oprah has her own list of favorites from Cozy Earth. And while I won’t claim to even be worthy of breathing the same air as Oprah, at least our shared love of the Cozy Earth line means I have something in common with the inimitable Ms. Winfrey. Read on for my Cozy Earth review and find out why this is one-bedroom splurge you definitely shouldn’t sleep on.

Premium Plush Bundle $250, $175

First things first, start your night off with a relaxing self-care routine in your new sanctuary. While Cozy Earth has all your bathroom essentials, from ultra-absorbent mats for when you come right out of the shower to spa-like waffle bath wraps and hair towels, the Premium Plush Towels are at the top of the list. The bundle set is fully customizable, so you can pick and choose which colored bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths you prefer. Plus, if you’ve noticed that your towels have started to pill or shed, you’re overdue for an upgrade. All three towel fabrics: Premium plushribbed terry, and waffle are created with a machine-washable weave that is made to last and never pill. Prepare to have guests beg you where you got your lush hand towels from.

Cozy Earth Short Sleeve Bamboo Pajama Set $175, $122.50

Cozy Earth introduced me to my first set of matching sleepwear, and I’ve never been the same since. If you want to feel like you’re at a lavish spa, wearing the ultra-soft attire they give you to change into, then you’ll want to invest in Cozy Earth’s Custom Bamboo Pajama Set.

Both the short- and long-sleeve sets are made of 95% premium viscose crafted from bamboo, which means they’re durable and resistant to pilling, no matter how often you wear and wash them. The set also maintains its signature stretchiness over time. For hot sleepers, the bamboo-based viscose stretch-knit material has temperature-regulating characteristics, so it’s breathable, and you won’t have to worry about overheating. Meanwhile, the 5% spandex in the fabric delivers an effortless draping silhouette and gives a bit of weight for a cozy, snug feel.

In terms of how the pajamas look, the stylish piping throughout the collar, cuff, and hem of the pants adds an elegant touch. I have the ivory and navy blue and white polka dot co-ords, but the other pigmented shades, like black, olive green, and navy have more noticeable piping. In addition to the brand’s six original hues, four more have been released more recently: a powdery blue, delicate lilac, a navy and white polka-dot design, and Cozy Earth’s first-ever floral print one. Also, while I adore a matching set, Cozy Earth also allows you to mix and match hues for the top and bottom, so go ahead and live out your wildest color dreams.

Cozy Earth Comforter, $729 $546.75

Before my partner and I got our Cozy Earth Comforter, we relied on a goose-down model. Unfortunately, the duvet cover didn’t close properly, so my husband and I were perpetually finding feathers littering the floor. Thankfully, we no longer have that issue because our new comforter from Cozy Earth is stuffed with silk, not feathers, giving it lightweight yet cozy comfort (minus the shedding). In fact, the luxury bedding and clothing brand allows you to customize your comforters: You can choose between standard or extra levels of filling; opt for silk or bamboo for the filling itself; and select from twin, full/queen, and king sizes. I’m already planning on investing in the comforter with extra fill for the colder months. While the standard does the trick with a lighter layer for spring and summer heat, I want to be a cozy burrito in the fall and winter.

The major difference between the silk and bamboo filling is that the former (made from 100% mulberry silk) has a little more heft to it, is moisture-wicking, and features heat-insulating properties. I imagine the experience is akin to the wonders of owning a weighted blanket because I’ve never fallen asleep faster or slept better in my life than I have since using this comforter. It’s designed for cold sleepers who like to stay warm, and as a cold sleeper myself, I wholeheartedly approve.

One thing that surprised me was how thin the comforter was compared to the picture. The product image gave off the impression that it would be extra plushy like my goose-down one; in fact, it was much thinner but still amply warm. Notably, I find it a whole lot easier to slide into my duvet cover than my goose-down comforter, which I had to spend a significant amount of time kneading to keep it flat.

In addition to the silk filling, Cozy Earth also offers one made of 100% bamboo viscose. If you’re more of a hot sleeper, this model is ideal, as it’s much airier and more lightweight than your average comforter.

Cozy Earth Bamboo Duvet Cover, $339 $254.25

I won’t go too far into explaining Cozy Earth’s Bamboo Duvet Cover, but you can think of it as the aforementioned comforter’s lightweight jacket. It’s a glossy, silky-smooth layer that keeps in warmth while remaining cool to the touch. Although you don’t have to buy both the comforter and duvet, I have the magical combo, and it truly does make it feel like I’m drifting off under a cozy cloud night after night.

Cozy Earth Bamboo Pillowcases, $99 $69.30

Imagine crawling into bed after a long day and…resting your head on a scratchy, thick, and hot pillowcase — the absolute worst. Don’t let that happen to you, and invest in Cozy Earth’s lightweight, soft, and cooling set of pillowcases now. The breathable and moisture-wicking fabric feels cooler than cotton and almost like silk. You’ll find yourself drifting off to sleep faster than ever before. One reader writes, “Cozy Earth sheets are the most luxurious sheets I have owned. While also the most expensive sheets I have owned, the quality is incomparable; they feel durable but incredibly soft and breathable. I’m very happy with my purchase.”

If you’re ready to level up your home life, head over to Cozy Earth and save 30% off sitewide for the rest of 2023 with code COZYREFINERY. Sweet dreams!

Flash-Sale Site Gilt Is A Goldmine For Designer Summer Trends Up To 70% Off

For many of us, the only way we can justify buying luxury fashion pieces is if it’s on major sale. The main issue is that those sales events don’t come around as frequently as we’d like. But what if we told you there’s a shopping destination hiding in plain sight where the deals are not only abundant, but most of what you can buy is up to 70% off? For fashion insiders, Gilt is the wink-wink, IYKYK retailer that has been secretly doling out the trendiest style pieces at generous discounts. Ever since its launch in 2007, the site’s mission has been (and continues) to be “the most engaging, off-price style destination, connecting world-class brands to the next-generation shopper.”

Gilt requires member sign-up to access, but it’s free to join (you’ll immediately be prompted when you visit the homepage) — and once you’re in, you’ll be tapped into a trove of designer goods offered in limited quantities at slashed prices for an allotted period of time. According to a Gilt rep, the site’s flash sale model tends to operate on a 72-hour-or-less window with new sales launching daily. (As you can imagine, hot-ticket items generally sell out quickly.) To give you an idea of what to expect, here’s a taste of what’s on sale at the time of writing this story: A pair of strappy Isabel Marant sandals for $247.99 at 54% off; Saint Laurent heart-shaped sunglasses for $239.99 at 54%; a royal blue Chloé pebble-leather tote for $2,599.99 at 20% off; and classic Gucci horsebit loafers for $799.99 at 10% off. And if those price points are still a bit too high, you can also find everyday casual brands like UGG, Free People, and Rebecca Taylor at Gilt, with many of those lifestyle fashion pieces ringing in at less than $100. Dedicated fans can also opt into Gilt Unlimited Annual, which offers free standard domestic shipping for one year, VIP assistance, exclusive and private access to coveted designers, and other perks.

If you’re new to Gilt and are looking for the retailer’s top recs for summer apparel and accessories, you’re in luck. From now till July 19, Gilt is hosting its Summer Trends event highlighting a curated assortment of warm-weather favorites from luxury labels like Christian Louboutin, Fendi, and Valentino to street style staples from fashion brands like ba&sh, Alexis, and Derek Lam 10 Crosby — all at deep discounts you can’t find anywhere else. Expect a mix of both high- and low-priced trends that are tailored for every kind of shopper, including a plethora of mid-range summer dresses you’ll want to frolic in all season long. Inspired by the fashion highlights seen on both the runways and the streets, we break down Gilt’s top summer trends below — and how these wardrobe pieces can amplify the elegance in your daily life

Grown-Up Grunge

Floral dresses, relaxed denim, modernized plaid, and embellished accessories are just some of the pieces that make up the grunge-inspired summer trend. Mixing and matching contrasting fabrics is key — such as a distressed denim vest layered over a sheer dress — or adding a studded handbag or pair of shoes to toughen up a softer look.

Shop Gilt

Say Yes to the Goddess

The vibe is decidedly “Destination: Mediterranean Sea” — sweeping maxi dresses, printed swimsuits, sun hats, and island-ready sandals. This summer trend is all about the luxified pieces that make you feel like you’re on permanent vacation. Even if you’ve got no travel plans, we highly recommend dressing like a goddess to your local beach or pool.

Shop Gilt

Flower Power

‘Tis the season for an explosion of florals. Bring on vibrant bouquets splashed across dresses, ditsy prints on tops, and abstract flowery motifs emblazoned on handbags and shoes. You can either commit to the theme and clash different floral prints and textures together, or select one wow-factor floral piece as the statement item and round out the look with neutrals.

Shop Gilt

Low-Key Luxe

Succession may be over but the concept of “quiet luxury” persists. The pieces that are part of this summer trend are understated, minimal, and impeccably crafted from premium materials. And although the splashy logos or hardware may be invisible, you can still tell these clothes and accessories exude swagger by the way they can elevate a wearer’s sartorial confidence.

Shop Gilt

Sunset Shades

Think: Swirly pastel wisps of pink, orange, blue, green, and white. Bright hues that evoke a sherbet treat. Palettes that enhance and compliment skin that has been sun-kissed. This summer trend celebrates the familiar colors of summer, from the crisp green flora to how the sun turns the sky ablaze as it sets for the evening.

Raffia Isnt Just For The Beach Heres How To Wear It Non-Stop This Summer

Last year, when Jacquemus debuted its spring 2023 collection, focused on raffia, the beachy textile was having a moment. Not only was the runway show titled “Le Raphia” — the French term for the material — but threads of raffia fell from the ceiling and models walked wearing everything raffia, from giant hats and oversized earrings to fringed crop tops and voluminous coats.

The show confirmed what I’ve always known: raffia is not just a beach textile. Since moving to the United States from Puerto Rico, I’ve been baffled by the way people reserve their raffia handbags and other accessories for salty beaches and poolside gatherings. Sure, I come from a place where it’s sunny and warm year-round — both factors that often lead to the usage of raffia — but why deny ourselves the opportunity to wear such a lively and relaxed textile in the winter? Or even just outside of a beach context? After all, raffia — extracted from the palm trees of the same name — is a tough material that can withstand much more than just sand and salty water, while its texture is a sartorial dream.

Many designers are also pushing the raffia agenda this year. Aside from Jacquemus, brands like Khaite and Bottega Veneta have released raffia versions of popular styles, including the latter’s Cassette handbag, which was a staple of the Daniel Lee era and usually comes in woven leather. They followed the popular Prada crochet tote bag, which was first released in 2021 and has since become a go-to for influencers like Chiara Ferragni and Alexandra Pereira. On the footwear front, It brand Larroudé recently released a variety of their popular sky-high platforms in raffia, as well as wedges — one of 2023’s top shoe trends — and mules in both tan and black.

This raffia takeover is notable for all the different ways this classic material is reinvented. Raffia, for example, is most commonly  seen in neutral or tan colors. But brands like Prada, have released their raffia accessories in bright and pastel colors, while Larroudé went the tropical goth way with matte black footwear. Seeing these displays of non-cliché raffia usage, I’ve renewed my hopes that this material — and its many siblings, that also include another palm tree-rooted textile, called rattan — can be taken out of their usual sceneries and hold a space in our wardrobes year-round. Not only because using our pieces regardless of the season may help wind down overconsumption, but because the woven construction and durability of raffia deserves a chance to shine when it’s not 80 degrees and sunny.

But, for now, let’s just start with summer in the city, shall we? With no plans for a beachside vacation, here are three ways I’m wearing raffia this season — no sand included.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. All product details reflect the price and availability at the time of publication. If you buy or click on something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Go For White

I’ve never been one to wear star bags in neutral colors. There’s something about the natural raffia shade that makes the handbag look washed out and it’s harder to pull off in non-beach scenarios. So, instead, I go for white, mainly because it’s easy to style and holds a certain elegance when taken out of a waterside context. This summer, I plan on styling it with jeans and a white button-down, a classic outfit formula that can be easily be adjusted with accessories.

Make it cocktail-appropriate

Ever since I got this raffia clutch (pictured above), I haven’t stopped wearing it to go out. No matter the time of the year, I’ve managed to pull it off by simply pairing it with any black night time outfit, from a romper to a matching set (pictured above). This summer, I’m adding my raffia platforms to the mix, not caring about matching my raffia. Anything goes after dark.

Just add a slip dress

Summertime silk dresses are one of my favorite pieces for the season. Adding a contrasting raffia handbag that clashes with the silk’s smooth finish is a great way to make the season’s outfits more interesting. If the contrast is too much, try to keep the colors as monochrome as possible (like the example pictured above), making it easier for the raffia to blend in.
