Why The Marías’ María Zardoya Wears A Puffer Coat In Los Angeles: “Winter Fashion Is My Favorite”

When I think of María Zardoya, the lead singer of the Los Angeles-based band The Marías, two colors come to mind: black and red. Since releasing their first EP Superclean Vol. 1, the band, known for their indie pop sounds and Spanglish lyricism in songs like “Hush” and “Un Millón,” has relied on this palette on everything from their album covers to music videos. “I’ve always loved [Pedro] Almodóvar and how he uses the subtlety of red in his movies,” Zardoya tells Refinery29, referring to the famed Spanish film director. “I feel it’s also representative of passion and love in the Latin culture.”

So imagine my surprise when I saw Zardoya dressed in shades of navy, pale blue, and brown for Aritzia’s new campaign, featuring the brand’s signature Super Puff coat, which will also include influencer Emma Chamberlain, first female Arab-American Nascar driver Toni Breidinger, and California-based model Gabbriette Bechtel. “It’s so comfortable,” she says of the coat, which is known for its subzero temperature resistance and is now available in six new styles, including a cinched version. “I feel like I’m wearing a duvet.”

Turns out that, aside from jumping into her modeling phase, Zardoya is undergoing a bit of an aesthetic transformation too. Recently, The Marías announced they’ll be entering a “new era” that Zardoya describes as “more grungy and less polished,” and will surely come with new music. It all comes off the heels of their successful collaboration with Bad Bunny in “Otro Atardecer” from the Puerto Rican star’s chart-topping album Un Verano Sin Ti. The collab saw Zardoya take the stage with Bad Bunny in Puerto Rico — where her parents are from — as well as Yankee Stadium, with the performances prompting the singer to experiment with her own stage aesthetics. They also recently partnered with reggaetón producer Tainy and rapper Young Miko for the song “mañana.”

Now, as she enters a new musical phase and partners with Aritzia, The Marías’ once-niche following is bigger than ever. And Zardoya is ready to welcome old and new fans alike into her world of black and red, even if it’s turning ever darker. “I’m just really excited for the fans and for everybody to see what we’ve been working on,” she says. “It’s a little bit different, but I feel like that’s the joy of being an artist, to constantly evolve and just hope that people can evolve with you.”

Zardoya chatted with Refinery29 about her new Aritzia campaign, vintage shopping, and spending the holidays in Puerto Rico

This interview has been edited and condensed

R29: You’re partnering with Aritzia now. Tell us more about the campaign.

MZ: I’ve always liked Aritzia. I love their socks — they’re just cushiony, super soft, and super warm. So when they reached out, it was an obvious “yes.” It was even more obvious when they said it was for the Super Puff. Usually, in shoots, I’m freezing in the studio, so I was like, “Sign me up. I’ll be warm.”

R29: You live in LA, so what will winter fashion for you be this year? Will you wear the Super Puff in LA?

MZ: Honestly, I think I will because I’m always cold. I would wear a Super Puff in like 65-degree LA weather. Winter fashion is my favorite and I love layering. I love jackets and scarves and hats and boots. But I’m also going to be spending the holidays in Puerto Rico. I just got this dress from Aritzia. It’s like this black mini ‘90s-looking Clueless era dress that I’ll probably wear for New Year’s Eve.

R29: The Marías has always had a fashionable aesthetic. What was the thought behind it?

MZ: I think fashion has always been at the forefront from day one. We have tended to go more vintage, like for our shoots and videos and photos just because I feel like there’s like a history there and you’re wearing pieces that actually belong at a museum.

R29: So what are your favorite vintage shops?

MZ: There’s one that’s my all-time favorite — it’s called Aralda Vintage. I’ve been wearing Aralda Vintage since our first music video. I think just the way that it’s curated is really, really special and she’s doing such a great job.

R29: It’s so hard shopping vintage, though. Any tips?

MZ: I think it takes patience to find out what designers work best on your body and what collections. I tend to love Gucci by Tom Ford. I also love Jean Paul Gaultier. It definitely takes some patience to figure out what you like. But once you do, [the pieces] are with you for life.

R29: You went on Bad Bunny’s World’s Hottest Tour last year. How did you adapt your stage style for those performances?

MZ: I definitely wanted the wardrobe pieces to be aligned with his aesthetic. The aesthetic for the album was summery and very fun and a bit different from what I would normally wear for a The Marías’ show, which tends to be a little bit more dark. And the colors too, I wanted them to match the colors he had on stage.

R29: I thought it was a very tropical goth look.

MZ: That’s exactly it, like a sheer bikini top with combat boots.

R29: So now that you’re entering a new musical era, is your style going to change too?

MZ: I think with Cinema [The Marías’ first LP] it was very classic. I am definitely playing around with some more texture for the next album and almost like shipwreck, a little bit more grungy. [Designer] Elena Velez is on my moodboard.

Ever stand in front of your jam-packed closet, staring at more than enough clothing options, and think: I have nothing to wear? Same. That’s where Outfit Dump comes in. We supply you with enough ideas to fuel your style until the next drop comes along.

The holiday season is in full swing, and between gift giving, an endless stream of parties, and planning festive outfits for said parties, it’s a whirlwind. If you can feel your creative juices ebbing when it comes to dressing, or feel like you’ve maximized what’s in your wardrobe after a year of pulling together different looks, coming up with a New Year outfit idea may seem like a daunting task. But we’re so close to the finish line, and can’t give up now.

And we won’t have to, thanks to the abundance of style inspo to be found on our Instagram feeds. The fashion set has fully leaned into the holiday dressing season, inspiring us to look at what’s in our closet (or online shopping carts) in new ways. Ahead, find 19 New Year outfits — think silk skirts, metallic shades, luxe mini dresses, and so much more — that can help get you started, whether you’re looking for a ball drop-worthy outfit for that New Year’s Eve party or a cozy look to celebrate at home.

New Year Outfit Idea: Monochromatic Quiet Luxury

Indulge in some quiet luxury for the new year with a sophisticated look in a monochromatic neutral shade. Start with a chunky sweater over a midi skirt or slip dress, then jazz things up with a pair of glittery kitten heels.

New Year Outfit Idea: Party-Ready Barbiecore

We’re not ready to say goodbye to Barbiecore just yet — and how could we with a gown like this? Add a pair of platform heels, and we’re sure Margot Robbie will be proud.

New Year Outfit Idea: Lace Dress

Because why wouldn’t you want to ring in the new wrapped in lace?

New Year Outfit Idea: Slip Dress & Knee-High Boots

If all-over lace is a bit out of your comfort zone, opt for a pretty slip dress with elegant touches of the fabric. Bring some intrigue to your outfit by pulling it together with a pair of knee-high boots.

New Year Outfit Idea: Sleek Maxi Dress

One of the easiest things you can do to look stylishly put-together is put on a sleek black maxi dress — especially as we come to the end-of-the-holiday-dressing season and are running out of inspo in our closets.

New Year Outfit Idea: Sequinned Dress

Sequins, glitter and metallics are a holiday classic for a reason, after all.

New Year Outfit Idea: Embellished Bow Dress

We can’t get enough of this festive mini dress look: with its velvety material, pearl embellishments, dramatic, drapey bow feature, matching headband, and silver handbag. It has all the makings of a top-tier New Year’s look.

New Year Outfit Idea: Metallic Dress

Because wanting to wear metallic hues doesn’t have to mean limiting yourself to golds and silvers.

New Year Outfit Idea: Transparent Metallic Gown

Or bid farewell to 2023 by combining two of the year’s biggest trends: silver and transparent dresses. We love the fun, glam chainmail-esque look of this Aimee Song look.

New Year Outfit Idea: Metallic Jumpsuit

Not much of a dress person? A metallic jumpsuit will serve you just as well. We’re obsessed with the alluring texture and iridescent sheen on the one pictured here.

New Year Outfit Idea: Metallic Pants

Go full disco-ball silver with a sparkly sweater and pair of metallic pants (something we’ve been styling in different ways all year long).

New Year Outfit Idea: Furry Shoes

Embrace this season’s biggest “ugly” shoe trend by building your outfit around a pair of furry shoes. We love the dressed-up, dressed-down contrast here between the sweatshirt, silk skirt and trench coat seen here — it’s perfect if you’re heading off to spend the night in with friends.

New Year Outfit Idea: Puff-Sleeved Mini Dress

Personally, we always feel a bit more fancy with sleeves this puffy.

New Year Outfit Idea: Teddy Coat

If you live somewhere that gets cold, you need to dress for both style and warmth. An oversized teddy coat that can be the star of your outfit makes that a pain-free task.

New Year Outfit Idea: Head-to-Toe Icy Blue

An icy winter blue is the perfect shade for any New Year’s outfit. Take inspo from Sabrina Carpenter by playing with different textures in a head-to-toe monochromatic look, or add your own spin to it.

New Year Outfit Idea: Mini Dress & Oversized Blazer

It’s hard to go wrong when pairing a mini dress and an oversized blazer. We love the unexpected edge added by the harness and moto boots here.

New Year Outfit Idea: Feather-Embellished Dress

If you’re not doing sparkles, why not do feathers?

New Year Outfit Idea: Sleeveless Dress & Gloves

A bedazzled black mini dress on its own is a good starting point for a New Year’s look. Bring in a pair of opera gloves, like The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes star Rachel Zegler, and you’re operating on a whole new level.

New Year Outfit Idea: Wrong Shoe Theory

Regardless of whatever look you opt for to welcome 2024, remember the TikTok-favorite “wrong shoe theory”: create a more interesting outfit by wearing a shoe that would typically be seen as completely antithetical to your overall look, whether that’s by style, color, or anything in between.

These 2024 Jean Trends Are The Stuff Of Denim Dreams

Just because we dubbed 2023 the year of good denim, that doesn’t mean 2024 will be devoid of top-notch blue jeans as soon as the clock strikes January. Denim doesn’t go out of style — rather, it’s the degree of the fabric’s popularity that fluctuates from year to year, never falling below zero but always capable of rising to extreme levels depending on the fashion climate. (2001 was, of course, a record-breaking year for the material thanks to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.) So where do denim trends stand in 2024?

Rather than the full-on denim-on-denim look, which made a big return in 2023 on the back of all things Y2K, jean suiting — which works as a set or as separates — promises to enter our closets and workplaces alike. Expect to see spillover from the top 2024 trends (and yes, that means going pantless) as well as fresh takes on last season’s greatest hits, including cargo pants and maxi skirts. If you’re waiting for the comeback of the skinny jean though, don’t hold your breath. According to Kate Bellman, editorial and content director at Nordstrom, wide-leg cuts are here to stay.

“As we’re seeing the pendulum swing away from decades of the skinny jean, naturally wide legs emerge as a key silhouette,” Bellman says. “There’s also much versatility with wide-leg style across wash, rise and length, so they work for a variety of occasions and styling needs.”

For all these insights and more, scroll on to shop the top 2024 denim trends you’re about to see everywhere.

Denim Trend 2024: Barrel-Leg Jeans

The barrel-leg silhouette straddles the line between structure and wearability, making it a compelling jean shape because of the way it holds a distinct form despite its loose fit. Faiza Bouguessa, founder of the contemporary womenswear label of the same name known for its sharp tailoring, says, “I am confident that the barrel leg style will continue to make waves in 2024 since this silhouette embraces a sense of ease and comfort without compromising on style. As the fashion landscape evolves, there is a growing appreciation for diversity in silhouettes.”

Denim Trend 2024: Office-Approved Jeans

According to Mathilde Mader, chief creative officer at Everlane, a shift is on the horizon in terms of how we think about workwear. Polished denim, she believes, is poised to become a go-to office essential: “We’re seeing less of a desire for pronounced distressing and more of a draw toward tailored, refined, and modern shapes.” This prediction is supported by a range of looks straight from the spring/summer 2024 collections including denim suits at Self-Portrait, Staud, Valentino, Coperni, and Dries Van Noten, along with a tailored denim ensemble complete with a matching coat at Kenzo.

Denim Trend 2024: Utilitarian Jeans

The enthusiastic embrace of the utilitarian aesthetic since the spring of 2023 will continue in 2024 with an emphasis on denim cargo pants. Other craftsperson-inspired styles that will be getting the jean treatment, according to designers like Kenzo and Etro, are jumpsuits, oversized vests, and overcoats. “Utility influences will continue relevance throughout 2024 and are a natural fit within an inherently casual denim wardrobe,” Bellman explains. “Exaggerated cargo pockets and carpenter styles add a stylistic reference to create statement-making impact. Pair [these details with a] more dressed-up top and fancy flats to provide styling juxtaposition.”

Denim Trend 2024: Extremely Flared Jeans

Denim experts at brands like Frame and Good American are already offering an alternative to the ubiquitous wide-leg silhouette for those who want to step away from skinny jeans in an even more dramatic fashion. Enter: the extreme flare, featuring a tight fit until about mid-way down the calf at which point the fabric splays far out from the ankle to create an eye-catching, opposite-of-skinny shape.

Denim Trend 2024: Jeans As Occasionwear

Shortly after designers like Brunello Cucinelli, Altuzarra, Cinq à Sept, Moschino, and Marques Almeida showed denim dresses and skirts ranging from fun ruffled numbers to actual gowns, Anne Hathaway (donning Ralph Lauren at the CFDA Fashion Awards) made it official: Despite what you’ve been told, jeans are officially acceptable as eveningwear, as long as they take on the form of more elevated attire. Think floor-grazing silhouettes, mermaid skirts, and high-low hems. In some cases, you can even wear your best pair of Levi’s to a special occasion according to style guru Jenna Lyons, who rocked hers to the RHONY reunion back in September.

Denim Trend 2024: Jean (Short) Shorts

Love it or loathe it, fashion is forgoing bottoms in 2024. The no-pants look has made its way from the Hollywood set to mainstream style, and jeans are no exception. LaQuan Smith, Alexander McQueen, and Dion Lee are backing the trend with a denim twist, showing barely-there bottoms made from the durable fabric that are Daisy Duke-levels of short.

Denim Trend 2024: Baggy Jeans

Furthering fashion’s mission to delay the inevitable return of the skinny jean, industry heavyweights are doubling down on ultra-loose fits. More is more, it appears, as far as jeans are concerned, with ample fabric flowing from the waists of runway models at Gucci and Schiaparelli. At Tibi, oversized denim was paired with oversized button-downs, while Prabal Gurung’s take on the trend was styled with embroidered blouses and bra tops.

Denim Trend 2024: Jean Embellishments

If there’s one trend that we’re happy to see maintaining its influence in recent seasons, it’s the touch of fun that’s popped up on handbags, shoes, tops, and beyond. Embellishments both big and small never hurt anybody, and Stella McCartney, Versace, Isabel Marant, and more are adding them to their denim. Whether it’s floral embroidery, mirrored eyelet accents, studs, or sparkles, let your jeans bring the party to wherever you’re headed in 2024.
