13 Ways To Get Into Your Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) Era For Taylor Swift’s Newest Re-Record

Drop everything and meet us in the pouring rain. We’ve entered the Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) era aka the biggest moment of the year for the most annoying person in your life. (“It’s me, hi, I’m the problem.”) Released on July 7th, this marks the third of Taylor Swift’s re-recordings after Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and RED (Taylor’s Version), all made in a bid to reclaim her masters.

The announcement — made while Swift was on stage during the Eras tour — came as no surprise to Swifties who have been combing through Swift’s music videos, Instagram posts and outfits for Easter eggs for months now (yes, sis even likes to drop hints with her nails). Now that the album is out, we’ve been lucky enough to see Swift parade around onstage in a giant tiered purple dress (“wearing a gown shaped like a pasty,” if you will) and release a music video for the vault song, “I Can See You” — featuring her Speak Now era ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner, nonetheless.

With all of the album re-release excitement, fans old and new might be wondering how to properly celebrate this enchanting era. So, from longtime Swifties who were lucky enough to live through OG Speak Now, here are 13 defining characteristics of the Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) era. Consider this your fan-approved guide for enjoying Speak Now (TV) in all its magical, heart-rending, chaotic beauty.

Be Your Most Dramatic, Romantic, Honest Self

Swift has always been a heart-on-her-sleeve, deepest-secrets-in-all-the-songs, naming-names kind of person but Speak Now — her first and only fully self-written project — is arguably her most vulnerable work. Over the 14-track standard edition, she sings about the power imbalance and mind games of age-gap relationships (“Dear John”), realizing you’re the reason someone you love is hurt (“Back To December”), battling bullies (“Mean”), the loneliness of leaving home for the first time (“Never Grow Up”) and forgiving someone who has wronged you (“Innocent”). And that just scratches the surface.

To adopt some Speak Now energy into your life, take the album prologue to heart. It’s time for some open-hearted romanticism and unabashed honesty (probably best to draw the line at storming your ex’s wedding though, as Swift fantasizes about in the title track).

Get Yourself A Journal

Given that this is one of Swift’s most diaristic albums, follow suit with your own journal — in purple, of course — to jot down your innermost thoughts, feelings, poems or lyrics.

Wear All The Shades Of Purple

The easiest and most obvious way to honor the re-record is through Speak Now era outfits. Purple is accepted by Swift and Swifties alike as the color of the era, most notably because the OG and Taylor’s Version album covers show Swift in a floaty purple dress. If you’re after a purple Speak Now look for the Eras tour, check out our comprehensive outfit guide here.

Or Don Your Most Enchanting Princess Dress

Speak Now is arguably Swift’s most magical album and not just because of “Enchanted,” a sparkly power ballad dedicated to a fairytale, love-at-first-sight moment. On “Long Live,” Swift compares the journey she and her band have been on to fighting dragons and becoming rulers of the kingdom; on “Sparks Fly,” she asks her crush to “lead her up the staircase,” comparing their smile to fireworks exploding into light. Get into the fairytale spirit with the most OTT tulle princess dress you can find and start practicing your twirling. It’ll come in useful when you hear Swift belt those high notes (or if you have a prom, wedding or formal occasion lined up).

Get Yourself Some Speak Now Merch

Swift’s official store is selling plenty of Speak Now (TV) merch but you can also hit up Etsy, which is a treasure trove of fan-made artwork, T-shirts, jewelry and more.

Write Your Favorite Lyrics On Your Arms & A 13 On Your Hand

On the original Speak Now tour, Swift started writing lyrics on her arms with a Sharpie — from her own songs and from others she loved — as a sort of mood ring to gauge how she was feeling that night. Copy her with your own favorite lyrics from the album, plus a sparkly 13 on your hand. From experience, the latter is best achieved with a Sharpie and nail polish for a long-lasting, concert-ready mark.

Spritz Wonderstruck Eau De Parfum (Or A Similar Dupe)

I’m hoping, praying and manifesting that Speak Now (TV) also gives us the rerelease of Wonderstruck eau de parfum, Swift’s first fragrance created to capture the magic and awe she describes in “Enchanted.” You can still find a few bottles for resale on eBay but there’s also an array of fan-approved dupes. After testing many of them over the last few years for the closest dupe, we think Bath & Body Works’ discontinued scent Gingham Vibrant is the closest — you can also find this being resold on eBay. A close second is Bath & Body Works’ Dark Kiss; some fans also argue for Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb and Victoria’s Secret Tease which are, in our opinion, less similar, but of the same sweet, fruity-floral family.

Opt For A Red Lip

A red lip and Taylor Swift are now synonymous with each other, so much so that it’s made its way into several of her songs (“red lip classic thing that you like”). Swift debuted the look in the Fearless era but it really became her signature during Speak Now, especially when she modeled a makeup collection for CoverGirl in 2011, sporting glossy, cherry-red lips.

Get Your Cowboy Boots On

Although RED was technically the last of Swift’s country-pop albums, Speak Now was the last time we really heard her country twang (“All you are is mean! And a liar! And pathetic!”). The best way to pay homage is a pair of cowboy boots, naturally.

Plan A Taylor Swift Night

A Taylor Swift night is a very special occasion for Swifties and everyone likes to spend it in a different way. Some host listening parties or head to themed club nights; some lock their doors, turn off their phones and hole up with a box of tissues. To celebrate this era, make the evening a whole affair by blasting Speak Now (TV), lighting all the candles, rewatching old tour footage (you can find the original Speak Now tour film on YouTube), eating purple themed snacks, making purple cocktails and slipping into purple PJs. Extra? Always.

Unleash Your Inner (Sw)emo Kid

Speak Now already has strong emo energy — consider the theatrical, orchestral “Haunted,” which many fans theorize was written for the Twilight soundtrack. For Taylor’s Version, Swift took that to the next level with features from Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Fall Out Boy on vault tracks “Castles Crumbling” and “Electric Touch,” respectively. “Since Speak Now was all about my songwriting, I decided to go to the artists who I feel influenced me most powerfully as a lyricist at that time and ask them to sing on the album,” Swift wrote on social media. Take note and get some FOB and Paramore/Hayley Williams on your playlist. Swifties who are also emo fans are called Swemos FYI.

Make Friendship Bracelets

Inspired by a lyric from Midnights’ “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” Swifties have been making and swapping friendship bracelets at the Eras tour. In honor of Swift’s final weeks of U.S. shows, as well as the international tour dates now on sale, get started on planning your tour outfit and all the friendship bracelets you want to make — especially if they are Speak Now and Taylor’s Version vault track-related.

Prepare For 1989 (Taylor’s Version)

Yes, Speak Now (TV) literally just came out, but we have good reason to believe that her momentous 2014 album is next on the lineup for re-records. Our biggest piece of evidence yet? In the final moments of the new “I Can See You” music video, Swift’s getaway car drives across a bridge with an overhead sign that reads “1989 tv.” So stock up on your ’80s Wayfarer sunglasses, sparkly two-piece skirt sets and baby blue hues, because 1989 (TV) will be “out of the woods” soon enough.

32 Delightful Puff Sleeve Dresses To Admire

A funny thing happened to our dress sleeves the last few years — they ballooned to cloud-like proportions. This fashion writer’s hypothesis is that puff sleeve dresses are what happens when fairytale escape meets stay-at-home comfort. The nap dress surely takes a lot of credit for kicking off this unexpected trend, but those frocks were more suited for indoorsy, (err, lockdown-y) life. These newer puff sleeve dress styles; however, are explicitly for being seen in. And there are so many options available right now, whether you're keen on the poofed-up skirts or something more casual for daily wear.

Because this big-time trend is only about to blow up even further, we’ve rounded up the best puff sleeve dresses that are sure to be the conversation starter at any social function. Broken down by dress length, we've compiled the best puff sleeve mini, midi, and maxi dresses for a range of different occasions (think: puff sleeve cocktail dresses). Click on for the best puff sleeve dresses that rewrite the definition of "arm party."

Puff Sleeve Midi Dresses

Puff-sleeve dresses channel extra-in-the-best-way energy. But if you want to take the extra down a notch, consider a longer hemline. A midi skirt length can help tone down the look from “total princesscore” to “princesscore but acceptable at the farmer's market.”

The Quiet Fashion Revolution In The Real Housewives of New York

The Real Housewives of New York have given so much to the world: Dorinda Medley’s “Not well, bitch” catch phrase; Ramona Singer yelling “Elegance and class! Where did it all go?” while dressed in Holly Golightly-ready pearls and a little black dress; Bethenny Frankel, to name a few. So, when the new cast of the franchise — now entering its 14th season — was announced back in 2022, it promised to deliver fresh air to a show plagued by 2000s socialites, near-royalty members, and the occasional Candace Bushnell appearance.

The show — out July 16 — includes cast members Sai De Silva, a New York-raised content creator; Erin Lichy, a luxury real estate agent; Jessel Taank, a fashion publicist and brand consultant; Ubah Hassan, model and philanthropist; Brynn Whitfield, a communications specialist; and Jenna Lyons, former J.Crew creative director and founder of eyelash company LoveSeen. Lyons was perhaps the biggest surprise in the bunch. As The New York Times later noted, Lyons is an “unlikely housewife.” Not only is she the first-ever gay cast member in the franchise’s history, but Lyons has built a public persona that’s far from the drama-ridden world of the Bravo show.

Moreover, with her high-low mix of ball gown skirts and denim shirts, Lyons’ style is worlds apart from the glamorous, label-flashing fashion often seen on The Real Housewives. “The producers and Andy have been really supportive of me being myself,” Lyons tells Refinery29. “The show has had a very distinct look and feel, historically. It still does have a very classic, sexy, very sparkly look, it’s just not who I am.”

Since premiering in the early 2000s, Housewives fashion has grown as wild as the on-screen storylines. What started as a reality TV show depicting the lives of ultra-rich women in Orange County, California, has evolved into a glitzy universe with elegant dresses, monogram sweatsuits, and plenty of metallic heels. It’s rare to see housewives appear on reunion shows without a few extra pounds of feathers, sequins, or rhinestones (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Erica Girardi wore a tiara-looking hair comb with a mirror-embellished mini dress by Retrofête for the show’s season 12 reunion). Meanwhile, opening sequences are often color-coded to match the franchise’s aesthetic. Salt Lake City, for example, has stayed with an icy palette of silver, black, and pale nudes throughout its three seasons to match the region’s snowy landscapes.

But, with the RHONY reboot, the sartorial rules have been thrown out the window — or, at least they’re starting to shift. Sure, the official cast photo features some heavy silver metallic pieces, which is not a grand contrast between the rest of the Housewives universe. Sai De Silva is wearing a bodycon dress and Ubah Hassan is in a cut-out gown. There’s also Brynn Whitfield in a pearl-encrusted top and maxi skirt, while Jessel Taank is wearing a black gown with embellished cut-outs. But then quiet disparities appear. Erin Lichy is wearing a black strapless mini dress, sober by Housewives standards and Jenna Lyons is in a white cropped shirt and black trousers, about as far from the franchise’s sartorial playbook as you can go.

When the show’s opening dropped last week, the all-black looks were kept in line with past seasons, yet there was still a fashion spin that pushed against the sartorial stereotypes created by the franchise. Lyons sported a black suit with an asymmetrical tube top and matched them with sneakers, a shoe rarely seen in Housewives history. De Silva replaced the expected dress with a corset and a leather pencil skirt, giving a high fashion twist to Housewives glamour. Taank kept her look in line with the official all-black New Yorker uniform via a long-sleeve maxi dress that was only heightened by gold accessories, like the Manhattan skyline on a dark night.

It’s perhaps the first peek at a Housewives franchise that is looking to evolve the very concept it’s championed for decades. I say this to people all the time, and I guess this pertains to fashion as well, but we’re all very different,” Lichy tells Refinery29. “I think what’s interesting about that is there’s going to be something for everyone.”

But what does that mean fashion-wise? “Sometimes my style can be on trend and the next minute it can be something that is only out of my comfort zone,” De Silva says of her fashion choices in the show, which include a velvet black strapless dress with asymmetrical neckline and a denim corset-like top. For Lichy, the transition to television has been about giving viewers a more relatable version of the New York lifestyle. “I don’t know if it [my style] changed that much for me just because professionally I have to look good anyway when I’m showing apartments,” the real estate agent says, adding that there are also moments when she looks like “a bum.” Meanwhile, Lyons says: “My looks are far from sparkly and I’m definitely not naked.”

There’s a quiet insurgence within the fashion choices in the show, and Lyons is its leader. One of Lyons’ confessional looks, for example, features her wearing a neck tie and pearl necklace, exhibiting just how much her presence in the show is changing Housewives standards — at least, fashion-wise. And the rest of the cast seem on board with following her lead. “This is definitely a new era,” says De Silva. “We’re just being ourselves, and this is a completely different show.”

Upgrade Your Summer Festival Outfits With These 5 Black-Owned Pieces

Welcome to Fashionably Black!, a style and culture guide for Black people highlighting the cultural moments, pioneers, and conversations we’ve always been a part of! Putting a magnifying glass to style & self-expression, Fashionably Black! explores the many ways we are the history, we are the fashion, and will ALWAYS be. We’re not trending, we’re true.

Summer is finally here, and we’re in the thick of festival season. You’ve set up group chats with your friend discussing everything from what artist you need to see live to where you’ll be meeting up at. But the last and most important factor is what you will be wearing. If you’re like me, you may have saved some items in your shopping cart via an online store. But time flies by, and before you know, it, you’re putting together your outfits just days before the event.

As your style editor, it’s my duty to guide you along the process of creating an ensemble you not only look fabulous in but feel fabulous in. Key factors to think about while getting ready are the weather forecast, outfit practicality, and last but certainly not least, incorporating your personal style.

You may think it’s easier to follow trends, but in all honesty, trends should be used as a starting point. If you want to come up with a look that’s your own, try selecting one or two trendy pieces you love and visualize how it meshes with what you already have in your closet as well as the feeling you want to evoke when wearing them to the festivals.

The five festivals we have on our radar to attend are Broccoli City, CurlFest, Lollapalooza, Rolling Loud: Miami, and AfroPunk. Here are some pieces we think you’ll look great in and that can be used to build your perfect festival fit.

Broccoli City (Washington D.C.)

If you’re around the DMV area, you know all about Broccoli City Festival. This year it takes place on July 15 and 16 at RFK Festival grounds in Washington D.C. The lineup is stellar, including the likes of Jasmine Sullivan, Coco Jones, Chlöe Bailey, Tia Corine, City Girls, and so much more. For this event, I recommend wearing a lacy crochet top – it’s breathable for the summer weather but also has a unique pattern and texture that will stand out and turn heads. This piece is versatile, so you can pair it well with any of your favorite bottoms, from a maxi skirt to denim shorts.

CurlFest (New York, NY)

One of the biggest natural hair festivals is making its way back! For the second time, it will be held at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. From my own past experiences, you’ll be running into all your friends you ain’t know would be in attendance and walking around to all your favorite hair care vendors. So it’s a must you wear something light and flowy such as a sundress, especially in vibrant colors and patterns to coincide with your dope hairstyle.

Rolling Loud (Miami, FL)

Rolling Loud is a festival that is always packed in each city it shows up. Its next destination is Miami on July 21 through July 23. You may think your fashion sense won’t matter or that it’ll be too much. In actuality, I recommend leaning more into elevated basics — the asymmetrical-shaped tops or bottoms will add the right amount of flare to your outfit. These convertible track pants are simple but edgy, and they’re great if you get hot because they unzip at your knees and turn into shorts. You’ll also get a lot of use out of them because of how versatile they are and how seamlessly they’ll fit into your wardrobe. A win-win.

Lollapalooza (Chicago, IL)

From August 3 to August 6, Lollapalooza will be taking over Grant Park in Chicago, IL. This four day festival is filled with music performers across many genres and chances are you’ll be grooving a lot. You don’t want to worry about carrying much except your ID, cash or card, and cellphone. A mini tote crossbody bag option is perfect and will get you through the days without the worry of losing anything.

AfroPunk (Brooklyn, NY)

This year, Afropunk will be taking place August 26 and 27 in a new location: Skyline Drive-In in Greenpoint. Although the summer may be coming to an end by this time, that doesn’t mean you have to put away the bikini tops just yet. This Aztec pattern bandeau top resembles an ode to the alternative style you see at this festival. It would also pair so well with a vibrantly colored high-waist skirt and combat boots. Styling tip: shop along the vendors for accessories such as jewelry and scarves to add to your ensemble.
