Christopher John Rogers Announced E-Commerce With An Optimistic Campaign

On Friday, New York-based designer and NYFW’s favorite Christopher John Rogers made an announcement that fans of his designs have been asking for since his very first presentation in September 2019. For the first time ever, Rogers’ new collection, which he calls 007, will be available to pre-order online on the just-launched ChristopherJohnRogers.com. Alongside the news, Rogers also released a campaign, shot by Alexander Saladrigas, which shows model Blue Aida being styled by Rogers himself, along with a small team of masked designers, hairstylists, and makeup artists. “Spring 2021 is as much a testament to the endless light that creativity can shine, as much as it is about the tenacity of teamwork and the optimism possible through fashion,” the release states. According to the statement, the campaign imagery was inspired by behind-the-scenes images by Richard Avedon, the iconic fashion photographer who shot everyone from Tupac to Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.

Rogers didn’t present the new collection during NYFW as he normally does, but instead, while Paris Fashion Week was happening, in the form of a 41-piece lookbook, featuring the designer’s signatures, from voluminous silhouettes to eye-catching colors. Rogers experimented more with fitted garments this season, as well as corset-like pieces and a striped maxi dress with an extremely low back — yes, even lower than Kim Kardashian West’s thong-baring Givenchy dress. Exquisitely tailored suits and exaggerated hourglass shapes were also included in the collection.

By now in his career, Christopher John Rogers is no longer an emerging designer. In 2019, he won the coveted CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Prize. He garnered accolades from the fashion industry with every collection he has since shown. He’s also dressed Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Lizzo, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Cardi B. Oh, and Rihanna, too. With the release of his spring ‘21 campaign and the announcement of his e-commerce business, it’s clear that Rogers is entering the next phase in his plan for global fashion domination — something we can’t wait to watch play out.

Jill Biden’s Matching Floral Dress & Face Mask Was A Bright Spot During The Debate

On Thursday, Donald Trump and Joe Biden took the debate stage once again, at Belmont University in Nashville. As was expected, for the occasion, Trump wore a red tie and Biden wore a blue one. Their families weren’t quite so predictable in the sartorial department. The women of the Trump family showed up wearing almost head-to-toe black as if the debate was, I don’t know, a funeral? In contrast, Dr. Jill Biden appeared dressed for a fresh start, in a knee-length light blue cocktail dress covered in blooming florals.

Dr. Biden’s debate dress, by Dolce & Gabbana, featured a square neck and elbow-length sleeves, and was paired with nude, pointed-toe Jimmy Choo heels. (Her dress is still available to shop at Net-A-Porter, while her heels are currently 40% off at Matches Fashion, if post-debate, you’re in need of some retail therapy.) As for jewelry, Dr. Biden juxtaposed pearls with beaded friendship bracelets.

In a move lauded on Twitter, Dr. Biden wore a face mask made out of the same fabric as her dress. “Thinking about Jill Biden matching her mask to her dress, and I hope that coordinating queen has a great day,” Emily Brautigam tweeted. Another, who goes by the username @FoghornH, wrote: “Dr. Biden, I just thought you should know my 4-year-old daughter gasped when she saw your awesome outfit last night! She absolutely loved how your mask matched your dress. I can’t wait to have a First Lady my daughter can look up to again.” (Melania also wore a matching mask but, given the all-black color scheme, it had a somber effect.)

Even better than the matching dress and face mask, though, was the jovial pattern. Typically, candidates’ wives dress for the debate in monochrome ensembles that rarely stand out. Of course, there was Mrs. Trump’s 2016 Gucci pussy bow blouse, which caused quite the stir following the infamous Access Hollywood tape, at the second presidential debate. Still, even then, she paired the shirt with matching pink trousers. Rarely does the First Lady or the potential next First Lady stray from the tonal uniform, making Dr. Biden’s vibrant floral print look especially welcome on the debate stage. (For the first presidential debate, Dr. Biden wore a green, satin dress by NY-based sustainable designer Gabriela Hearst.)

While this is speculation, there is something to be said about Dr. Biden wearing a floral-print dress. According to Pro Flowers, the pink rose, which is prominently featured on the dress, is a symbol of “grace and elegance” that is often used as a token of “admiration and appreciation,” which she embodied post-debate when walking on stage and congratulating her husband with a warm hug and a kiss. (Social media was quick to point out that, during the embrace, the President and the First Lady stood next to each other in the chilliest of manners.) There’s also the White House rose garden, whose blooming flowers, to the disappointment of many, were ripped out in favor of a less lively design by the current First Lady. While the hope is that Dr. Biden will restore the garden to its former glory for now people can bask in the beauty of her floral dress.

Kendra Scott Feels Most Powerful When Proving The Naysayers Wrong

Kendra Scott is a designer, mother, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. Using her love of natural gemstones and $500, Scott designed her first collection of jewelry in 2002. She has since grown the company to a billion-dollar valuation with over 100 stores nationwide. Inspired by the guidance she received during the early days of her business, Scott actively seeks out opportunities to mentor and support budding entrepreneurs, especially other women in business. One of the very few women who lead billion-dollar companies, Kendra has been most recently chosen as a Guest Shark on Season 12 of Shark Tank.

I feel most powerful when…

Someone tells me I can’t do something. That’s just the fire I need to prove them wrong. I remember in my early days of Kendra Scott, so many people told me I could never succeed as a fashion brand if I wasn’t on the coasts. But I chose to listen to my gut, and plant our roots in Austin. Eighteen years later, Austin is blossoming into a business and style capital, and I believe my business has thrived even more because we chose this city as our hometown.

Power to me means…

Chasing unapologetically after your dream, and never listening to someone else’s measurement of what you are capable of. Only you can decide that.

What do you do when you feel powerless?

I take a step back and recharge by spending time with my family. Being a mother is my No.1 job, and remembering that not only helps me feel centered, but it also gives me the fuel and encouragement I need to go out and achieve something great. I do it all for them.

What’s your power anthem?

“Fight Song” by Rachell Platten. Every time I hear this song, it makes me think of my lifelong friend Holley Rothell Kitchen. When she was diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer, she made her own Fight Song video to encourage others going through the same fight, and it went viral. When I hear this song, it reminds me to fight like Holley did. Fight for what you believe in, fight for your family, and no matter what challenges come your way, never let them knock you down.

Who’s your power icon?

My mom. From a young age, I watched her raise six children and become a powerhouse working parent. My mother was a Mary Kay consultant, and I loved watching her take her career into her own hands, building success in a way that made sense for her and her family. She was my first inspiration for becoming an entrepreneur.

What do you wear when you want to feel powerful?

A great pair of statement earrings. I’m a firm believer that jewelry can give any woman that instant boost of confidence she needs to take on the world. My favorites of the moment are our Holland Statement Earrings. Talk about a power piece!
