Carrie Bradshaw’s Bird-Like Fascinator Returns For The Reboot

Over the past three decades, Sex And The City’s Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) has worn unforgettable outfits that we keep coming back to. But the time she donned a feather fascinator to her first wedding attempt to Mr. Big (Chris Noth) still haunts fans to this day. It didn’t stop costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago from bringing a version of the look back for the SATC reboot …And Just Like That. On Monday, Parker was spotted wearing a bird-like black-and-pink headband while shooting the series.

When Bradshaw wore a similar piece, in the first Sex And The City film, the fictional writer herself poked fun at the hair accessory, mockingly saying, “I put a bird on my head!” Back then, the original costume designer, Patricia Field, paired the blue feather number with a Vivienne Westwood wedding gown for the memorable scene, where Bradshaw slams her rose bouquet at Mr. Big in the middle of the street after he doesn’t show up for the wedding at the New York Public Library.

Seems like a feather headpiece has become a symbol for marital problems between Bradshaw and Mr. Big. As a script leak for the forthcoming series revealed, the two are in trouble again.

Although the feather headband may be seen as a bad omen, it’s actually on-trend. Since January, feathers (particularly of the faux variety) have become a major staple, with celebrities like Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, and Tracee Ellis Ross embracing the look, and designers like Bottega Veneta and Valentino incorporating the embellishment in their collections.

The headpiece is just one of the many familiar style signatures we’ve spotted so far in the costumes of …And Just Like That. Last month, Parker wore the Fendi Baguette, a blue flower pin seen on Season 3 of the HBO show, and a black studded belt Bradshaw donned throughout the SATC films.

To find out if the feather fascinator is indeed a bad omen, we’ll have to wait until the reboot’s premiere — set for late 2021 — on HBO Max.

R29 August Fashion Picks: What We’re Excited For This Month

Although we’re still in a global pancetta (add that to the pandemic nickname list), we can console ourselves with the fact that vaccines are available, the weather still allows for outside activities, and we can dress up a bit fancier than our usual athleisure.

As we step into August, the last full month of summer, we are looking forward to embracing this freedom, alongside upcoming biopics, must-have sustainable handbags, and innovative ways to wear face masks

Ahead, some of what the R29 style team is looking forward to this month.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Miaou's fall '21

“Technically, Miaou launched its fall '21 collection on July 22. But I know that, personally, I'll still be thinking about it well into August. Included in the Instagram-favorite brand's new drop are corsets — a major trend in 2021 — as well as halter-neck going-out tops and vegan leather low-rise pants that look straight off Christina Aguilera circa 2003.” - Eliza Huber, Fashion Writer

Thrifting in Puerto Rico

“I’m celebrating my birthday month at home in Puerto Rico. Every time I go back, I spend a lot of time visiting local vintage and thrift stores that have incredible gems. Some of my favorites are Electroshock, Lentejuela Vintage, and Hola Aida. Thrifting still has some taboos in Puerto Rico, but there is a really strong generation of curators, shoppers, and entrepreneurs breaking those barriers.” - Frances Solá-Santiago, Fashion Writer

Sarah Flint Mask-Scarf Hybrid

“Thanks to its stunning print, I was a fan of this Sarah Flint mask-scarf as soon as I saw it. But it wasn’t until a recent vacation that I found how useful this hybrid is when you’re on the go. Made from washable silk, the piece is easy enough to wear all day as a scarf, but can quickly be turned into a mask (with a metal nose piece and a filter pocket) using adjustable ear loops, making it perfect for when you’re going in and out of indoor spaces.” - Irina Grechko, Fashion Director

The Mob Studios

“I think TheMob is one of the most exciting and innovative fashion designers in Puerto Rico right now. They take trending pieces that are everywhere and reinvent them into brand-new styles that look unlike any other. The only reason I haven't bought anything yet from the brand is because I can't choose what to get first, but I definitely will this month!” — Mercedes Viera, Associate Deals Writer

Respect

“Respect, the forthcoming Aretha Franklin biopic starring Jennifer Hudson, arrives in theatres on August 13 and includes a slew of show-stopping ensembles. As the film progresses through Franklin's life and career, it also showcases her style as it changes, from classic in the early '60s to bold and extravagant in the '70s. Especially noteworthy are her performance looks, including the two white dresses from her Madison Square Garden and L'Olympia shows in 1968.”  — EH

Santos By Mónica Bag

“For the past few months, I’ve tried to invest in high-quality bags that won’t empty my wallet. So this month I’m set on getting my hands on the Santos By Mónica Agave Triangular Tote — made from cactus leather — as a birthday gift for myself (could I be any more Leo?). They are almost always sold-out, but I’m a woman on a mission.”  — FSS

@andjustlikethatcostumes

“There has been a rise in Instagram accounts dedicated to TV’s fashion. As a fan of costume design and the original Sex and the City series, it’s no surprise that I’ve taken to following @andjustlikethatcostumes, an account dedicated to the fashion on the HBO Max reboot — run by the forthcoming series’ costume designers, Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago.” — IG

New hair

“Only slightly style-related, I recently chopped most of my hair right off. It was very spur-of-the-moment, but I felt like I've been feeling it for a while. I got it done in the Hairrari in Williamsburg, a gender-neutral barbershop of my dreams. For me, hair plays a major part in my outfits and how they come across. Let's just say I've never felt more myself! I'm so excited to continue to explore how old and new outfits go with my new hair.”  — MV

Making The Cut Season 2

Making The Cut — Amazon’s designer competition, hosted by Project Runway’s Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum — is back for its second season with a really impressive set of designers. Since its premiere on July 16, I’ve already selected some favorites: Andrea Pitter, Andrea Salazar, and Gary Graham. This season, designers are challenged to create garments that would fit a global brand — one they’ll have a chance to build with a grand prize of $1 million — with the added obstacle of a post-pandemic economy.” — FSSPhoto: Courtesy of Amazon.

Proenza Schouler Brings A Utilitarian Spin To Birkenstock’s Sandals In New Collab

As the American workforce gears up to get back to IRL work, the daunting reality of uncomfortable stiletto pumps is creeping up. But in a post-quarantine world, when athleisure is still the dominating dress code, confining footwear can be a thing of the past. Just ask Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, who are dropping their second partnership with “ugly” sandal pioneer Birkenstock, available for pre-order now

Functionality is the central theme of this new collection, which features reworked models for Birkenstock’s Arizona and Milano styles, in cobalt blue, rust burgundy, black, and ecru. In keeping with Proenza Schouler’s utilitarian style, McCollough and Hernandez used industrial contrast topstitching from their past collections for the collaboration.

“Birkenstock and Proenza Schouler both share a common respect and admiration for the craftsmanship and detailed work that is integral to all of our products,” said McCollough and Hernandez in a press release. “We are excited to pick up where we left off and expand on the  collection with fresh colorways that feel very in the moment and true to our brand.”

Back in 2020, the two brands collaborated on a ‘90-inspired collection that included canvas material for a summer-ready sandal closet. This time, McCollough and Lazaro are building their new styles from leather, resulting in a more polished look.

“Founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have been valuable partners that are completely aligned with our core values, two creatives that strive to find the perfect balance between form and functionality,” said Oliver Reichert, chief executive officer of Birkenstock.

With the rise of “ugly” shoes and clogs, Birkenstock has expanded its roster of designer collaborations over the past few years. The brand has partnered with designer names like Rick Owens and Jil Sander, cementing popularity within the fashion circle.

Retailing between $300 and $450, the new models will be available on 1774.com and proenzaschouler.com, starting August 6.

J.Lo’s Vacation Dress Featured This Year’s Top Trend

String bikinis, nautical stripes, and Carrie Bradshaw-approved nameplate necklaces have all made appearances on Jennifer Lopez’s birthday getaway in Italy, where she’s been lounging on yachts and shopping in the city alongside beau Ben Affleck for the past week. But leave it to the Hustlers star to save her best look for last.

On Saturday, Lopez was spotted closing out her trip in the coastal town of Portofino, wearing a white sundress by Cult Gaia, paired with oversized sunglasses, a printed tote bag, gold flip-flops, and her much-discussed “BEN” necklace.

Lopez’s dress, called the Keegan dress, is mid-length and features diamond-shaped cut-outs — a huge trend in 2021 — across the waist, as well as a collared neckline, cuffed sleeves, and pockets. The white version, worn by J.Lo, is sold-out on the brand’s website but is available, for $578, at Saks in sizes XS to M. A striped alternative is also in-stock, at Cult Gaia in sizes XS to S, as well as on Forward, where sizes XS to L are available.

This is hardly the first time that Lopez has donned the daring trend, though it could very well be our favorite of her many takes on the look. In January, she posed for a feature in Elle, wearing a red, cut-out turtleneck from Prada’s spring ‘21 collection. Two months later, in March, she brought out the peek-a-boo trend again, modeling a black bodycon dress with triangular cut-outs across the chest and arms for her spring campaign shoot with DSW.

Since cut-outs are continuing to become a staple on runways, Instagram, and red carpets alike, we doubt this will be Lopez’s last time testing out the trend.

If you’re interested in trying her most recent look for yourself, shop the Cult Gaia Keegan dress, below.
