Meena Harris’ Inauguration Night Dress Is Kate Middleton-Approved

From England’s first family to America’s second, one dress has crossed the ocean. Following the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday, the VP’s niece Meena Harris swapped her daytime Ulla Johnson green dress (pictured, left) for another of the same shade (pictured, below). For the nighttime celebrations, the author, lawyer, and founder of the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign slipped into a high-neck, three-quarter sleeve dress by Susie Cave’s U.K-based fashion brand The Vampire’s Wife. And according to royal expert and author of HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style, Elizabeth Holmes, Harris isn’t the only “royal” to do so.

Soon after Harris posted a mirror selfie of her look on her Instagram Stories — with the caption, “On my vampire shit” — Holmes pointed out that Harris’ exact Vampire’s Wife dress was previously worn by none other than Kate Middleton.

The Duchess of Cambridge debuted the dress — which is currently for sale at Farfetch and Matches Fashion starting at $2,344 — in March of last year during a three-day royal tour of Ireland. The color was meant as a statement of support for the country, and, at the time, one of many green dresses she wore, according to Bustle. With her dress, the Duchess wore Manolo Blahnik pumps in a similar shade of emerald and carried a metallic clutch purse. (When the Duke and Duchess ventured to the Guinness Storehouse as part of their official royal duties, her elegant handbag was replaced with a creamy pint.)

Middleton isn’t even the only member of the Mountbatten-Windsor clan to take a liking to Cave’s collection of green dresses. Princess Beatrice, the cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry, wore a dress nearly identical to Middleton’s and Harris’ at Ellie Goulding’s wedding in August 2019. She paired it with a decorative headband and black pumps.

Harris being, well, Harris, was a bit more daring with her styling of the dress than the royals across the pond, choosing a pair of black, pointed-toe boots to wear with it, as well as a patterned face mask.

Below, shop the dress, titled the Falconetti dress, as well as a handful of more affordable, yet equally royal-worthy options — which, yes, we’ll be pairing with boots.

Here's Why Kamala Harris Inauguration Look Matters

TikTok Calls For More Looks From Biden's Grandkids

TikTok Has Spoken — & It Wants More Fashion Looks From The Biden Grandchildren

After sleeping on it, one thing about Joe Biden’s inauguration has become clear: The entire day, from the swearing-in ceremony to the celebrations afterward, will go down in fashion history. Kamala Harris and Michelle Obama were visions in purple, Lady Gaga nodded to The Hunger Games with couture Schiaparelli, and Bernie Sanders went viral for his mittens knit by a Vermont schoolteacher. But while those looks — as well as Jill Biden’s blue Markarian coat and dress and J.Lo’s all-white Chanel ‘fit — were certainly deserving of praise, according to TikTok, it was an entirely different and less expected group of women that stole the sartorial show: the President’s kin.

“The grandchildren of Biden are elite, straight-up elite. Like, undeserving of the flex of coats,” said TikTok user Jessica Morton in a video that first shows the President’s children Hunter and Ashley Biden, before flashing to his grandchildren, Naomi, Finnegan, Maisy, Natalie, and Hunter Jr.

To the sound of “Baby I Got Your Money” by Kelis, TikTok user Jett Williams called out Maisy for wearing purple Jordan 1s with an all-black look. “Y’all lookin at Natalie, but Maisy came prepared,” the caption of the video reads. (Meena Harris’ husband Nikolas Ajagu also wore Jordan 1s to the Inauguration; his were a product of Nike’s collab with Dior.)

To the same track, TikTok’s @essiehuh called the Biden family’s fashion “immaculate” during a photo montage showing Maisy’s ensemble, as well as the monochrome looks from Natalie, in a bubblegum pink coat by Lafayette 148 New York which made her the day’s style star, and Finnegan, in a camel look from Brandon Maxwell. Biden’s eldest granddaughter Naomi also wore a matching ensemble, choosing head-to-toe white by Adam Lippes.

But TikTok’s praise of the Biden family’s style game didn’t stop when the sun went down. Rather, the looks they brought for the Celebrating America TV special that followed were even more celebrated on the platform.

For the occasion, both Natalie and Finnegan showed up in sequin corset dresses by Markarian, Alexandra O’Neill’s New York-based label that also designed the First Lady’s blue look from earlier that day. Maisy swapped her Jordans 1s for a different pair of Jordan 1s, which she delightfully wore with a pink-and-white dress by Rodarte

Though the jury is still out on whether Natalie’s pink coat-and-mask duo or Maisy’s sneaker flex won for the daytime events, the evening’s winner was unanimous. Thanks to her decision to ditch the status quo and choose a tux (with an unraveled bow-tie!) for the special rather than a dress, Biden’s daughter Ashley stole the hearts of everyone on TikTok (and the entire internet).

Between the internet’s praise for Natalie’s eye for coats and Ashley’s tux, the people have spoken about Biden’s family. And what they said was, “[They] are style icons, period.”

7 Instagram-Approved Tips For Dining Outside In The Winter

As someone who has successfully — and not so successfully — dined outside on several occasions since New York City’s indoor dining ban, I can say one thing for certain: staying warm is a struggle. Despite the efforts of many establishments to make customers comfortable, by building wooden infrastructures where the sidewalk used to be and placing heating lamps at every table, without proper sartorial preparations, no level of artificial heat will protect you from the winter elements.

All to say: It’s important to be prepared. That involves thick, wool socks and, if you're anything like us, a lot of Uniqlo Heattech. (And a face mask, of course.) Because while an oversized puffer seems obvious, ask anyone who’s tried to successfully eat ramen in a bulky down coat, and they’ll likely caution against it. Instead, thin, but effective, layers are key.

Ahead, seven outfit tips to make wintertime outdoor dining more enjoyable. With a little inspiration and a lot of cold weather accessories, you’ll be slurping up carbonara in the snow in no time.

Invest In Heat-Retaining Fabric

My rule of thumb for outdoor dressing is this: You should have a layer for every course you plan to order. Just drinks and an appetizer? You should be fine with a sweater and a coat. Drinks, apps, salad, entree, and dessert? Prepare to pack on more layers.

I like one (or more) of mine to be made up of Uniqlo’s Heattech line, which now ranges from leggings to T-shirts and accessories like gloves. You can also opt for something that is similarly designed to retain heat or fleece-lined leggings/shirt.

Add A Turtleneck Layer

Feel like you’re almost there, but won’t quite be warm enough for two hours spent outside in January? Toss a ribbed turtleneck — perhaps even one with the aforementioned heat-retaining technology — underneath the matching sweatsuit or a sweater you’re wearing. It might seem unnecessary when you're wearing long sleeves, but, when you’re between courses one and two and the chill starts to set in, you’ll appreciate the added layer of protection.

Don’t Underestimate Utility Boots

No longer are outdoor, waterproof boots only appropriate for hiking and fishing. The durable footwear option has become a popular alternative to heeled, leather booties in recent years in cities, with brands like Ganni and Acne Studios designing fashion-forward styles on the outdoor shoe staple. But the benefit of wearing waterproof, often thickly lined utility footwear doesn’t just have to do with their new-and-improved look. They’re also warmer than traditional footwear — even more so if you add a thick pair of wool socks underneath.

Opt For A Longer Coat

A tiny, cropped coat is cute for photos, but when you’re planning to sit outside for a prolonged period of time, it may not be enough. That said, wearing a maxi coat does, in no way, equate to a lesser-than ‘fit. In fact, a lot of 2021’s chicest coats are ankle-length rather than cropped. Plus, as an added bonus, by opting for longer outerwear for dinner, you open up the possibility of hiding something more comfortable underneath (read: baggy sweatpants). Just make sure the coat isn't too bulky or constricting or heavy, so you're still comfortable eating/drinking.

Throw On A Statement Beanie

We know, we know: Winter hats are the downfall of every good hair day. But, when you’re planning to spend over an hour in the cold, there’s really no accessory more capable of keeping you toasty than a beanie. Luckily, this season, designers have crafted winter headwear so cute, it’s actually worth the flat hair. (Think: colorful, knit beanies and fuzzy, shearling bucket hats that you won't want to take off.) Don’t believe us? Just ask Zendaya

Urban Outfitters Super Chunky Knit PomPom Beanie, $, available at Urban Outfitters

Zara Ribbed Beanie, $, available at Zara

The Elder Statesman Watchman Tie-Dyed Ribbed Cashmere Beanie, $, available at Net-A-Porter
Wear An Oversized Scarf

The great thing about blanket-like scarves is just what you’d expect: They double as a throw that you can throw over your shoulders or cover your legs with while you're eating.

Bring Reinforcements

Now that big bags have replaced tiny ones in fashion, it’s easier than ever to stylishly carry around extra warm layers wherever you go. That way, when appetizers and cocktails turn into a full-blown dinner, you won’t have to run to a nearby store to pick up a beanie or a pair of gloves. You’ll simply have to dig through everything else in your bag to find them.
