Anifa Mvuemba & Tia Adeola Wowed NYFW. They Want To Help Other Black Designers Do The Same

Black women fashion designers are constantly echoing the same sentiment: there’s still a need for more diversity in the industry and more resources for Black designers. Although New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has become more inclusive and diverse in recent years, this season’s roster of Black designers still only made up roughly 15 percent of the week’s calendar. Designer Tia Adeola, who has a self-titled clothing brand, says  financial accessibility is one of the biggest barriers for many young designers.

“It’s so expensive. It’s so difficult,” Adeola told Unbothered about the economic struggles of entering the business.

Adeola, who is from Lagos, Nigeria, was raised in London before living in New York. The 26-year-old has taken the fashion industry by storm and worked alongside celebrities such as Serena Williams and Gigi Hadid. Adeola graduated from The New School with a B.A. in culture and media. She first launched her brand from her dorm room during the summer of 2017. She said that those integral years not only helped shape her career but her personal style as well.

“I still haven’t let go of any of my foundational styles that I started with,” Adeola said.

Last year marked her second NYFW show, which paid tribute to Thierry Mugler following his death.

Now, she’s adding a sophistication flare to her latest collection that still maintains her iconic signature sexy pieces. This time, she opted for an intimate dinner paired with a special screening instead of a traditional runway show to debut her 2024 collection

Adeola, 26, encourages all young Black designers looking to break into fashion to keep going no matter the challenge. “My advice is just to wake up every day and keep going. And just have faith that you’ll end up where you dream to,” she said.

Anifa Mvuemba, founder of the beloved luxury fashion brand Hanifa, is another Black woman who has broken barriers in the industry. She has been previously recognized by the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, InStyle’s Future of Fashion Award and several others.

Now, as Mvuemba steps into motherhood after giving birth to her first child a few months ago, she’s also embracing all of the multifacetedness that comes with being both a parent and a successful entrepreneur.

“Everything that happens with Hanifa is in sync with everything that I’m going through or just my life,” Mvuemba told Unbothered. The new Hanifa Fall Winter ‘23 collection represents femininity in boldness with Mvuemba calling the textured bold and vibrant 14-piece collection a reflection of “every woman.”

“I’m a woman who moves at her own speed,” Mvuemba said about giving into societal pressures of what it means to be a working mother.

Her biggest piece of advice to other Black women designers is to “pay attention to the people that support you” –– while continuing to hone in on their community and build a personal connection with your clients as they build momentum in the industry.

“I think that’s why Hanifa has gotten to the place that it’s at — we have been so connected to our customer. We think about them at the beginning of the process.”

Mvuemba, who is based in Washington, D.C. and recently got engaged to her longtime partner, has plans to release an upcoming bridal collection –– an exciting new venture that she first hinted at back in 2020 following her viral moment.

But ultimately, Mvuemba says she hopes her daughter will be her greatest legacy, along with her efforts to uplift her community.

“I want my legacy to be that I supported other designers,” Mvuemba said.

These Were The Biggest Fall 2023 NYFW Trends

This Versatile Asymmetrical Shoulder Bag Is R29 Editor (& Taylor Swift!) Approved

Super Sale AlertGet 10% off sitewide at AUPEN using our promo code R29AUPEN10, now through September 30.

It seems like the Y2K tiny bag trend is going absolutely nowhere… so I might as well join them. As a non-binary lesbian, I usually don’t venture too much into the world of femme-leaning handbags, opting for canvas tote bags and fanny packs instead. I style all my fancier fits with my beloved Santos by Monica vegan leather bag, but now I was ready to challenge myself to try out the latest trend and scale it down. Enter AUPEN, the ethical luxurious handbag brand best known for its unique asymmetrical designs and recycled vegan leather material. I tested out one of its signature bags, the Nirvana, spotted on the arms of by celebrities like Taylor Swift, and took it out into the city. Whether I was at a casual date night or a fancy influencer-filled NYFW party, the Nirvana proved to be an easy addition to my outfit thanks to its versatile look, super soft feel, and heavy gold hardware. Plus, we scored an exclusive, super-rare deal for Refinery29 readers only. Now through September 31, get 10% off all AUPEN handbags with the promo code R29AUPEN10. Keep on reading for more details of my love affair with the Nirvana and why exactly this super sale is totally worth it.

AUPEN Nirvana, $340 $306

Made from recycled vegan leather, the Nirvana is one of AUPEN’s signature bags featuring a unique asymmetrical body, braided strap, and gold hardware. You can choose among nine neutral and vibrant colorways, like Noir, Snow, Earth, Olive, Taupe, Rouge, Ash, Blush, and Flame. If you know me in IRL you’d know how obvious my choice of color really was; this shade of olive is one of my favorite colors for my closet, so it was a no-brainer. It’s easy to style and I don’t already own this shade in handbag form. Whether paired with jeans for a more casual date night or a pastel orange Miss Circle dress for an NYFW kick-off party, this shoulder bag is a new favorite of mine.

The Nirvana is small enough to be considered part of the Y2K shoulder bag trend, but big enough to fit all of my essentials — we’re talking phone, card holder, hand sanitizer, lip gloss, travel-sized setting spray, and my bestie’s AirPods that didn’t fit in her own tiny bag. The vegan leather is super soft and the hardware (specifically the gold bean) has that luxurious heavy feel, the one that makes it obvious this bag will last for years.

I’m more of a tote-bag-and-crossbody-fanny-pack-wearing gay, but I have a real love for luxe bags — in fact, my very first expensive purchase with my full-time-job paycheck was a luxe bag, the Santos by Monica Dolores Square Tote. Still, I had yet to jump to the tiny bag trend, mostly because I carry around way too much to fit into them and I wasn’t sure how comfortable they would feel on my shoulder as I walked around the city. This AUPEN bag truly made me change my mind, though. It was like it was molded perfectly to fit my shoulder, without it slipping or being too tight — all thanks to its specific asymmetrical cut.

If you’re looking for a high-end bag unique enough to stand out among the millions trending right now but classic enough to be easily styled with absolutely everything in your closet, then AUPEN’s Nirvana bag is truly the one — even Taylor Swift’s a fan! I know I’m officially obsessed and will be in the market to buy more to add to my collection. But if the Nirvana isn’t your vibe, worry not, there are plenty of AUPEN bags fit for every closet and every season (and also on sale).

Elwood Clothing’s $30 Oversized T-Shirt Has Sold Out 5 Times — But It’s Back In Stock

You never want something until you can’t have it. On The Sell-Out, we’re getting the scoop from your favorite retailers on what’s selling like crazy. Watch this space to find out what everyone’s buying, sign up for waitlists, and keep tabs on restocks.

The search for the “perfect white tee” can feel fruitless. Everyone has a different idea of what it looks like, how it feels, and what sartorial purpose it serves. Yet the quest is a never-ending one. A capsule wardrobe simply does not exist without a white T-shirt, and people will always pine for that lived-in cotton T-shirt for its versatility, utility, and affordability.

For those of us who prefer the oversized, vintage-looking tee — slightly destroyed at the hems with a heather finish — the Justin Bieber-approved basics brand Elwood has a cult-favorite T-shirt that is finally restocked after selling out five times since its 2020 debut. It’s the genderless Oversized Core Tee, and it has a slightly long and boxy silhouette, vintage wash, worn-in hand-feel, and billowy sleeves. Although my wardrobe is already well-stocked with a plethora of white T-shirts from high and low brands, the Oversized Core Tee fills a very specific gap: It truly feels, looks, and wears like a decades-old vintage tee. It slouches over the body with a devil-be-damned insouciance, which contrasts well when paired with a crisp trouser or pleated skirt. Or, if you prefer to double down on that bed rot aesthetic, it’s an easy-going lounge piece to drape over your favorite sweatpants.

Elwood Oversized Core Tee, $30

For the purposes of this story, I acquired the Oversized Core Tee in Vintage White, but this 100% organic cotton tee comes in an array of other neutral core colors, such as Vintage Black, Vintage Ash Grey, and Vintage Brown as well as seasonal limited-edition colors like Vintage Red, Vintage Royal, and Vintage Kelly Green (all of which are already sold out — sorry!). Because this style is unisex and oversized, I went down one size from my usual medium to a small — and it fits superbly on my 5’3” frame without me feeling like I was loosey-goosey in fabric.

It’s a bit lighter than tees from other basics brands like Aritzia and Everlane and a hell of a lot more relaxed with the distressed crewneck. It’s the kind of tee that you don’t have to feel bad about getting the occasional stain on (since that’s exactly the vibe), and at $30, there’s no reason to get overly precious about preserving its vintage-ness. In fact, I would say this is the kind of tee that would distress better with age and with a normal amount of washings.

While the Oversized Core Tee remains a fan favorite, the rest of Elwood’s lineup is worth a closer look as well. In the past year, the brand has introduced bi-monthly drops — and its latest limited-edition Summer Core Collection consists of soft loungewear, such as sweats, baby tees, and tanks in muted colors. Ahead, click to shop some of our favorite base-layering pieces from the Los Angeles-based brand before they sell out for good.

Unexpected Staple Styling

Madewell’s new styles include a range of staples that are extremely wearable but feature prints and colors. Looking for new workwear? Check out the brand’s striped and belted blazer that’s fashion-forward, its signature button-down in a new cropped cut, or a midi skirt that makes a case for polka dots being a neutral. Or are you looking for new outerwear? Find a traditional vest in a daring leather, a trench coat that doesn’t conceal your entire outfit, or a bomber jacket in a purple quilted fabric.

Bold Denim Dressing

Madewell’s huge denim range includes plus-size styles and high-end collabs. From signature straight cuts to retro flares and wide-leg jeans, there are so many new styles to experiment with in a ton of hems and washes. But the denim offerings aren’t restricted to jeans: There are button-down shirts (if you want to rock a Canadian tuxedo), relaxed overalls, and denim maxi skirts. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with carting up a few styles as an Insider while they’re on sale and you’re earning points.

Elevated Everyday Accessories

We’ve also been graced with sophisticated handbags, shoes, and jewelry. You’ll find suede bucket bags in both classic and mini sizes, leather tote bags that’ll amp up your everyday style, and crossbody bags that can be converted into top handles. Madewell also came out with Mary Janes (our self-declared shoe style of 2023) and a pair of knee-high boots that are on target with other shoe trends we’re seeing this year.

Ming Lee Simmons On Life After College, Her Personal Style, And NYFW Trends

Ming Lee Simmons is one degree hotter –– and now, she’s ready to take the world by storm.

The eldest daughter of Kimora Lee Simmons, graduated from New York University this May after attending NYU for an individualized study program focusing on fashion business and consumer behavior.

The 23-year-old told Unbothered that she’s grateful for the support from her family, including her mother, who she says is her “best friend.” She also added that she loves being able to lean into their family group chat between her sister and mom as a stress reliever when things get overwhelming in her life.

Among some of her biggest obstacles during her undergraduate studies was dealing with the challenges surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in New York City – which had some of the strictest restrictions across the country in 2020.

Ahead of this season’s New York Fashion Week, we quickly caught up with the model and entrepreneur about what’s next, her fashion inspo, personal style, and more.

Unbothered: How would you describe your personal style?

Ming Lee Simmons: I like classic, clean girl aesthetic and for right now, I’m investing in things that will last longer.

What advice do you have for current fashion students?

MLS: To give yourself the grace you need to grow and remember that the most important thing to remember is to finish.

Who’s on your music playlist? Name some of your favorite artists right now.

MLS: Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo, Ice Spice, Nicki Minaj and Lana Del Rey.

What was traveling to Japan this summer with your family like?

MLS: That is a part of my history and heritage and I go to see a lot of places where my grandma grew up.

Tell me about the cultural impact of Baby Phat.

MLS: It was a brand that made you feel good about yourself. It was for the girls.  I have a new collection dropping soon with my mom that is fun and flirty. It’s made to make you comfortable and express yourself.

What’s next for you?

MLS: I’m still trying to find my footing, but I want to travel and see the world. I love fashion, and when I travel, I get inspiration.
