Miami Swim Week Featured Lingerie-Inspired Bikinis & Retro Prints

While New York City may run the trends in ready-to-wear, Miami never fails to turn up the heat on resort wear every year at Paraiso’s Swim Week. This season, both veteran and up-and-coming designers from around the globe gathered in South Beach to showcase what’s next in the market for swimsuit trends

From Colombia Runway Show's designers offering fresh twists on haute hues and bold prints to fan-favorites Poster Girl, Peixoto, and Riot Swim showing off their signature beach-to-bar pieces, Miami once again solidified itself as the city to watch for upping the swimwear game.

Ahead, discover the newest It color (surprisingly, it’s not hot pink), the retro-inspired aesthetic dominating the collections, and cover-ups that work just as well for lounging by the pool as they do dancing under the moonlight at the beach club.

Get a headstart on next season’s must-know swim trends by shopping them now.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Metallic Swimsuits

Even at the beach, the party doesn’t have to stop when high-shine fabrications come to play. While typical metallics (gold, silver, bronze) are still popular, what will really turn heads come next season is the more subtle approach to shine –– often seen in an unexpected pastel like on the runways of OneOne, Beach Bunny, and Brasilia.Photo: Courtesy of OneOne.

Aqua Blue Bathing Suit

Blue? For swimwear? Groundbreaking, I know. Hear me out, this aquatic hue feels fresh once again with its electric undertones. Luli Fama had this color headline her Almalfi-inspired collection while Bahama Mama and Cupshe matched it back to other brights for a punchy palette. Photo: Courtesy of Cupshe.

Lingerie-inspired Bikinis

Lingerie-inspired dressing is having a ready-to-wear moment, from slip dresses to camis — and now, in swimwear, too. Sweet-meets-sultry details like dainty bows, lace trim, and ruching reminiscent of underpinnings were swoon-worthy on the runways of designers like PQ Swim, Kittenish, and Beach Bunny. Retro Swimsuits

Nostalgia has been top-of-mind within the fashion industry lately, and the latest swim rendition is part ‘70s disco fashion, part glam pool party. Just Bee Queen and Luli Fama offer swim and cover-up silhouettes classic of the era like halters and billowing-sleeve tops dosed in retro prints. Photo: Courtesy of Luli Fama.

Swimwear-as-outerwear

When chatting collections in South Beach, no conversation was complete without the mention of beach-to-bar dressing. Think: versatile cover-up dresses, flowy pants, and matching sets that can take you from a casual day at the beach into the evening, through a simple swap of accessories. Swimsuits In Unexpected Fabrics

While prints will always be focal in swimwear, this season we saw a shift to experimentation within fabrications instead. There were far fewer materials typically suited for the sea (like neoprene) and more that are synonymous with ready-to-wear –– like lace, terry cloth, crochet, and denim –– that lend an innovative touch to the water-ready collections. Photo: Courtesy of ImaxTree/Poster Girl.
