How To Style Your Zodiac Sweater Based On Your Sign, According To An Astrologer

The thing about personal style is that it’s so deeply, intimately unique to each individual — a one-of-a-kind aesthetic that has been meticulously, painstakingly honed over years. Decades. But what if we were to tell you that your fashion likes and dislikes, your sartorial predilections were all…predetermined by the stars?

It works in much the same way that all zodiac-rooted behavioral understandings are dispensed and then accepted as universal truths: Cancers are notorious homebodies, Leos thrive on attention, Capricorns tend to be fastidious in nature, Pisces are incredibly sensitive. And those widely known characteristics can very much be applied to fashion, which coincidentally enough, aligns with the launch of cheeky British knitwear label Gyles & George’s very wearable, highly covetable collection of zodiac sweaters.

That's why we tapped Corina Dross, an astrologer who grew up with astrology (her mother used to draw charts by hand with a pencil and an ephemeris — a book of star charts) and has been teaching astrology for more than a decade, to reveal not only the different ways in which each sign approaches dressing, but also how to style your Gyles & George zodiac sweater. What makes these knits even more special: Each one features special designs from the brand's popular knitting pattern books, and they're available for the first time since the '80s. (This is also the first collection the brand has put forth since the '90s.)

But first, a disclaimer: “Astrology is so much deeper than just your sun sign,” Dross says. “So, if you have a sun in Aries, but all the rest of your planets are in Pisces, you might resonate with a Pisces description. We all have multiple signs, and you might not resonate with your sun sign.” With that said, click through to get to know more about your personal style, based on your sign and shop your zodiac sweater.

Aries

Your approach to fashion: “Aries is, stylistically, a risk taker. Style choices tend to be daring and sometimes you emphasize sexuality, sometimes you emphasize an outdoor wilderness-y vibe. There could be this feeling, ‘I’m ready for action.’ Whatever it is you’re wearing, you’re not going to be wearing something that’s fussy or uncomfortable or takes a long time to put together, but makes an immediate impact. Aries is more interested in starting trends that are not yet wildly popular than in paying attention to what is mainstream.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: The siren-red shade (perfect for the most daring), the statement-making Aries sheep, the roomy silhouette (size up for an effortlessly cool, oversized look).

How to style your zodiac sweater: “Bright colors, pieces that feel sexy but comfortable, like short shorts or a bedazzled baseball cap. In other words, pieces that are a little aggressive, a little tomboyish, and sexy without it being high femme.”

Taurus

Your approach to fashion: “Taurus is much more interested in textiles. Taurus is incredibly sensuous, so the feel of a fabric is really important — you might be drawn to organic cotton or linen or raw silk. In terms of style choices, you’re a little more conservative. You want something more classic and effortlessly gorgeous, like a silk blouse.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: The lightweight 100% cotton fabrication and the bold, yet neutral black-and-green color palette.

How to style your zodiac sweater: “Anything that not only feels good to wear but also feels timeless, so a pair of tailored wool pants or a cotton skirt.”

Gyles & George Taurus Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Gemini

Your approach to fashion: “Gemini is a style chameleon. You want to leave all your options open all the time. Geminis are particularly  interested in accessorizing and adornment, whether that’s through tattoos, having a lot of statement jewelry, like big earrings, wearing an unusual printed shirt. You tend to gravitate toward pieces that have a lot of visual detail that strike an immediate impact.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: The vibrant, attention-grabbing cobalt blue and bright yellow hues, the pretty star detailing, the overall high-impact impression it delivers.

How to style your zodiac sweater: “Over-the-top prints, accessories, lots of jewelry — anything that achieves a maximalist look.”

Gyles & George Gemini Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Cancer

Your approach to fashion: “For most Cancers, clothing is incredibly personal. You have a signature look that’s really recognizable. You have your favorite outfits and you wear them all the time. In heavy rotation. You make as few changes to your style as possible. There can be this attachment to styles that were formative, more so than whatever is current in this moment, so you tend to wear the same type of sweater and pants every day.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: The super-soft fabrication that you'll want to wrap yourself in and the wear-everywhere versatility of a cream knit (but its red lettering and crab will push you out of your comfort zone — in a good way).

How to style your zodiac sweater: “Cancers have a need to feel safe, so you reach for clothing that makes you feel the safest, which is very subjective. There’s also a combination of softness and hardness you’re drawn to, so pairing your sweater with big combat boots can blend coziness with toughness.”

Gyles & George Cancer Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Leo

Your approach to fashion: “Leos really dress to be noticed. You’re willing to be unique, which means that whatever it is you’re buying, you want to make it your own. There’s a tendency to alter or hand-tailor your clothing, or a desire to seek out vintage and one-of-a-kind pieces.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: "Clashing" colors that you'll somehow make work and the fearless lion that represents who you are at your core.

How to style your zodiac sweater: “Leos want to stand out, so perhaps you’ll want to layer your sweater over a retro-print dress, finishing your look with a hat you thrifted.”

Gyles & George Leo Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Virgo

Your approach to fashion: “Virgos really live for the details in clothing. Precise fit is important as are all the details around closures and stitching and tapering. Virgo energy can go in one of two directions: 1) to be really unassuming, so wearing whatever people around me are wearing, or 2) to want to dial in to something that’s exquisitely cut and fitted, with perhaps a ton of buttons, when you’re dressing to impress.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: The beautiful knitwork and the fine details seen on the maiden (see: the thin outline of her hair).

How to style your zodiac sweater: “With a pair of incredibly chic pants or a fitted button-down shirt — you’re a bit excessive in terms of how proper things are.”

Gyles & George Virgo Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Libra

Your approach to fashion: “Libra is also in Venus like Taurus — both signs really love beauty and sensuality in what they're wearing, but unlike Taurus, Libra is more willing to go high femme. You’re much more willing to wear skirts and flowing scarves — pieces that feel more sweet.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: The sweet, high-femme pink-and-red palette (arguably the most romantic color combo).

How to style your zodiac sweater: “With skirts that feature sweet details, like ruffles or pleats. You want to play femininity. There’s less of a concern with classic silhouettes.”

Gyles & George Libra Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Scorpio

Your approach to fashion: “For Scorpio, clothing is definitely armor, so you really gravitate toward, if not something that's downright punk, then at least something that references that kind of defiant or ‘keep away’ attitude.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: The tough all-black aesthetic (this is quite possibly the most badass knit out of the collection) and the edgy depiction of the scorpion.

How to style your zodiac sweater: “Definitely a classic biker jacket, leather, metals, chains, and some pretty kickass boots.”

Gyles & George Scorpio Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Sagittarius

Your approach to fashion: “For Sagittariuses, clothing is drag, it’s camp, it’s fun, it’s really flamboyant. Of all the signs, Sagittariuses are the most willing to treat clothing as a playground, whether that’s cosplay or something that’s very high costume…but for going out for coffee.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you:
The drama of it all, from the delightful colors (lavender and bright yellow) to the archer/centaur in mid-shot.

How to style your zodiac sweater: “You're not known for your subtlety, so you’re drawn to bright colors, styles that look either retro or cartoonish, exaggerated or avant-garde silhouettes — so perhaps topping your sweater with a super-loud coat — that will make an impact.”

Gyles & George Sagittarius Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Capricorn

Your approach to fashion: “Capricorns love a uniform, like Cancers, but with Capricorn, there’s more of a desire to be taken seriously. You’re interested in clothing that has a good value and will last a long time. You’re not going to jump on a new trend; you’re going to buy the jacket that you’ve seen in the store for 20 years, and you know it’s going to be in fashion for another 20, so it’ll be a good investment.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: A serious sweater (a monochrome palette that anchors the whimsical, mythical spirit of the sea goat) for a serious person.

How to style your zodiac sweater: “Well-tailored pants and a blazer — pieces that make you look adult, that convey a sense of authority. Practical.”

Gyles & George Capricorn Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Aquarius

Your approach to fashion: “Aquarians are known as the most eccentric in the zodiac, but when it comes to fashion, you learn more toward normcore, meaning you don’t see your individuality as something you need to show who you are. Unlike Leos and Sagittariuses, you're not trying to make a statement with how you look. You try to make a statement in much more subtle ways.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: The eccentricity of the shades, tempered by the normcore nature of a zodiac sweater.

How to style your zodiac sweater: “Think normcore. For Aquarians, fashion is fairly understated but with an ironic twist, so perhaps wearing a zodiac sweater that doesn’t actually have ‘Aquarius’ on it — something that’s subtly subversive, a little anti-fashion. You’re trying to look as low-key and unassuming as possible because your true weirdness will shine through no matter what.”

Gyles & George Aquarius Sweater, $, available at Gyles & George

Pisces

Your approach to fashion: “Pisces, similar to Libras, can really get down with something flowy and soft and gorgeous. Pisces is the most ethereal of the signs and there is this love for things that are sheer and gauzy. Pieces are an incredibly sensitive and open sign, so wearing things in layers can help give a sense of protection.”

How your zodiac sweater speaks to you: Your love of flowy-ness shines through in the pretty aqua accents and the fish illustrations.

How to style your zodiac sweater: “You love layers, so styling your sweater with leggings and a long sheer tunic, or throwing on a scarf.”

Why I’m Only Dressing In This Happy Color For Spring

Checking Out is a new shopping column straight from the cart of Simone Oliver, Refinery29’s global EIC. She wears many hats (all of them stylish), and she’s always got an inspiring, wish-worthy list on deck. Watch this space for monthly market musings from Simone (and sometimes, a special guest). These aren’t just editor’s picks — they’re THEE editor’s picks.

This is a very passionate love letter to the color green, simply because of the way it makes me feel. Sometimes when getting dressed I’ll match my mood to a green hue, and regardless of where my emotions are that day, my posture feels straighter and my energy is cheerful and breezy. I feel more alert and self-aware — especially in a world where I sometimes feel swallowed alive by constant turmoil and inconsistencies. Take it from internet-famous “Green Lady” Elizabeth Sweetheart, who told the New York Times in 2015 that “I’m always doing things to keep happy, and green is just the most positive color.” The American Psychological Association even declared that “green is good” in a 2001 cover story.

Sure, my various shopping carts are dominated by green thanks to spring’s imminent arrival — but even during those long stretches of winter, sporting a Kelly green blazer felt like wearing a cloak of hope. It’s undeniable that we’re in the throes of a seasonal re-emergence, so when I spot someone carrying a Kermit the Frog-colored clutch in the street, it’s the sartorial equivalent of seeing little flower buds emerge on ground that was once barren. In fact, when I threw on this verdant trench from Apparis’s soon-to-be-released Bold Escape collection, I was practically airborne.

And while shades of green haven’t scored a place on Pantone’s Color of the Year list since 2017 (Greenery) and 2013 (Emerald), you can’t deny that 2021 was the year that brands like Bottega Veneta (and Jacquemus) owned the stage — even forcing the term “Bottega green” into our lexicon and wardrobes. Google found that “sage green” was one of the top-searched “aesthetics” in 2021, and Etsy declared that emerald would be color of the year in 2022. Even Apple has introduced a new iPhone 13Pro option in the growingly popular gray-green “alpine” hue, and it’s slick.

But let’s #neverforget all the other important players in the green spectrum — acid, pistachio, seafoam, mint, lime, hunter, emerald, forest, sage, moss, olive, to name a few. I have so many favorite that I created a highlight reel of the green tones that are filling up my cart right now. Even if you’ve telling yourself you’re not into colors, it’s all good — the items I’m sharing here range from entry-level to pro, whether you’re simply green-curious or have already mastered the art of monochrome.

Lime Green

The most acidic of all the greens, lime is one of those boldly discordant tones whose electrifying hue clashes so much with the colors around it that it comes full circle and somehow goes with everything. Whether you’re opting for head-to-toe citrus or just want to finish off your look with a colorful, juicy burst, this high-viz tint is just the ticket.

Kelly Green

A grassy green with cool undertones, Kelly is probably the truest hue on the scene, and has been embraced by brands like Simon Miller, Bottega Veneta, Jacquemus, and Longchamp to create a verdant color story for fashion fans to follow.

Mint Green

This airy, breath-of-fresh-air green has come far from its 1960s-housewife heyday, showing up on everything from the thoroughly modern, internet-breaking Jacquemus “Chiquito” bag to a pair of $30 TikTok-viral athletic shorts. Whether it’s a barely-there Wint O Green hue or a deeper, fresh-making spearmint splash like that of Ferragamo’s tried-and-true Vara pump, the addition of mint is sure to wake up your wardrobe and put some pep in your step. (Its laid-back saturation level will also more intense shades on the color wheel, as evidenced by this hybrid olive-Kelly-mint green mashup sported by influencer Lydia Okello.)

Emerald Green

The chill elder sister in the green family, emerald tone is the perfect hue for devotees of neutrals who want to dip a toe in the green pool without leaving their navy-blue-and-black comfort zone. In recent months, the jewel tone has made an appearance on Victoria Beckham’s runway and garnered a “color of 2022” nomination from Etsy.

Coastal Grandma Is TikTok’s Newest Escapist Aesthetic — Here’s How To Dress The Part

There is a new TikTok aesthetic taking over the social media app, and we may have Nancy Meyers to thank for it. Since March, “Coastal Grandmother” — a term coined by creator Lex Nicoleta —  has garnered over one billion views and exhibits all the best retirement fantasies we’ve ever had. Think: Jane Adler’s (Meryl Streep) laidback wardrobe of silk overshirts, delicate robes, gardening-ready sun hats in It’s Complicated or Erica Barry’s (Diane Keaton) beachside outfits that included white turtlenecks, cozy knits, and bucket hats in Something’s Gotta Give. Consider “Coastal Grandmother” the ultimate aesthetic we’ve all dreamed of having when those retirement savings accounts start rolling in.

@lexnicoleta GRAN EXPLAINED #coastalgrandmother ♬ This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) – Natalie Cole

The style, which is described by Nicoleta as “Martha Stewart–adjacent, not fully Ina Garten … Nancy Meyers chic,” includes staples like white button-downs, straight-leg jeans, caftans, and fancy robes. For reference, look to #coastalgrandmother icon Oprah, who is often found wearing a button-down shirt and straw hat while gardening. Don’t have a garden of your own? You can embrace the aesthetic while shopping at the farmer’s market, baking an apple pie, and sipping a white wine spritzer on the porch/stoop/rooftop at the end of a long day.

Over the past few years, thanks to the pandemic, fashion has welcomed a series of escapist aesthetics, from “cottagecore” to “cabincore.” As the walls closed in on us quite literally during lockdown, we found ourselves yearning for the outdoors and transforming ourselves into corset-clad fairies that dream of rural pastures and rolling hills.

Yet, “Coastal Grandmother” hits different. Its escapism relies on a shared desire to live by the beach, buy overpriced tossed salads, and spend our days wearing maxi dresses while finding Great Love in our 60s.  But for many millennials and Gen Zers, who witnessed the rise of the gig economy, the retirement goal of Meyers’ movies is becoming more of a fantasy by the day, as we find ourselves owning just 5% of the wealth in the United States

So, excuse us while we put on our white button-downs to shop at the farmer’s market for our Saturday plans to make a lemon cake. If you want in now, here’s how you can dress the part.

White Button-Downs

For “Coastal Grandmothers,” the white button-down shirt is a staple because of the item’s versatility, taking its wearer from gardening to sipping wine at a pool party.

Straight-Leg Denim

The key to “Coastal Grandmother” jeans is to pick a pair that’s slouchy and distressed enough to go for a beach walk.

Caftans

A caftan is a key item to look like you embrace vacation life year-round, transitioning from reading a book by the water to hosting friends for a lemon-themed lunch (Le Creuset cookware is a must!).

Sun Hats

“Coastal Grandmothers” know the sun is an enemy to the skin, and so they always wear a chic hat. From straw hats and visors, add a versatile, casual hat to your accessories lineup to channel this aesthetic.

Robes

Everyday luxury is a running theme in the “Coastal Grandmother” aesthetic, so why drink coffee wearing years-old T-shirt from your high school field days? Cover it up with an elegant robe — whether terry cloth or silk — to make your mornings feel more indulgent.

Michelle Obama’s Portrait Dress Made History. Here’s How It Came Together

When Michelle Obama’s official portrait, painted by Amy Sherald, was unveiled in 2018 at Smithsonian Museum‘s National Portrait Gallery, it was praised for its showcase of vibrant colors. In it, the former First Lady is shown sitting against a sky-blue background in a white-and-black maxi dress with pink, red, and chartreuse graphic squares designed by Milly’s then-designer Michelle Smith. Since its unveiling, the dress has become an important chapter in American fashion history. So much so that, in 2021, the museum exhibited the gown alongside the portrait. Now, it is being further immortalized in the new Showtime series The First Lady, starring Viola Davis as Obama.

Four years later, Smith is still wrapping her head around the historic moment: “To be a small part of the Obama legacy and how they’re remembered through that portrait through that visual of the dress, it’s an incredible honor,” says the designer, who left Milly in 2019 and is currently designing her own namesake line.

While Smith had worked with Obama on several occasions prior to the portrait, the designer was still pleasantly surprised when stylist Meredith Koop approached her to create a custom dress based on a piece from Milly’s spring 2017 collection. Often, several designers are commissioned to create pieces for occasions like this, but only one gets selected, which is why Smith prepared for a different dress to be picked, especially given the printed design. “When they told me the dress that they were interested in from my runway show, I was surprised because it was so kind of fashion-forward and revealing,” says Smith, referring to the often-conservative, solid-colored ensembles that get picked for National Gallery’s portraits.

For instance, Laura Bush opted for a navy gown with a shirt-like neckline and a drop waist. Eleanor Roosevelt and Betty Ford, who are also depicted in Showtime’s new series, donned equally somber outfits: a pale blue suit and a light blue turtleneck dress with draped cape, respectively.

While different from the looks that came before, Obama’s portrait dress was emblematic of the style that defined her while she occupied the East Wing, which progressed from pencil skirts, cardigans, and pearl necklaces early in her husband’s term to shoulder-baring dresses, metallic gowns, and vibrant pops of color. Even more notably, the former First Lady made it a point to wear as many clothes by up-and-coming American designers, including Prabal Gurung and Thakoon, as well as international designers during her time in the White House, which made a dress from Milly an especially fitting choice.

The look also embodied the optimism that surrounded President Barack Obama’s two terms in office, which saw historic policy changes from the legalization of same-sex marriage to the repealing of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Smith says this sentiment was also a defining theme for the collection from which the dress was pulled. “The feeling of it was optimism toward women’s rights and toward equality,” she says.

After customizing the dress, Smith spent months communicating with Koop, who, according to the designer, would send images of Obama’s fittings with notes of changes and adjustments. The final product was a white halter maxi dress with a flowing skirt that featured blocks of color that Sherald compared to Dutch artist Piet Mondrian’s work.

“[After completing the dress,] I didn’t hear anything for a while,” Smith says. “A few months later, Meredith called me to tell me the news but I was in the middle of preparing for an upcoming fashion week, so I filed it in the back of my mind.” When the portrait was finally unveiled, the designer was in Paris choosing textiles for a new collection. “I was probably the last person on the planet to know when it was announced [because of the time difference],” she says. “I wish I could have been in the United States for that moment, but it was kind of fun just being alone in Paris and having that moment to myself.”

While Smith didn’t get a chance to see the painting at its home at the National Portrait Gallery, she finally had the opportunity to witness her historic mark in American art when the portrait made a pitstop in Brooklyn during the “Obama Portraits Tour” last year. But, as soon as the painting returns home, Smith is hoping to make the trip to Washington, D.C., alongside her two kids.

“[It’s incredible to] realize that one day my kids will take their children to the Smithsonian’s Portrait Gallery, and they’ll be able to see the portrait,” she says. “Art lives forever.”

The First Lady is streaming now on Showtime.
