And the award for best 2021 Golden Globes red carpet accessory goes to Sarah Paulson… and her runway-ready Prada cast! Ahead of the show, the actress — who was nominated for a Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series in the Drama category for her role in Ratched — posed for Instagram in a black off-the-shoulder Prada gown, dangling silver earrings, and her arm wrapped in a cast emblazoned with the Italian luxury designer brand’s logo.
Enlisting the help of celebrity stylist Karla Welch, Paulson turned the injury into a fashion statement. The purple-hued cast, that stretched from her fingers to above her elbow, offered a fun pop of color against the retro-esque dress. “When you’re Lady Paulson, you get a custom Prada cast to go with your custom Prada dress,” Welch captioned her Instagram post showing off the finished look.
Just hours before the award show was set to kick off, Paulson shared a photo of her arm wrapped up and under ice packs. “So this happened,” she captioned the image. It’s not yet known how exactly Paulson was injured.
Here’s hoping she has a speedy recovery and matches her cast to her outfits until then.

Just because the 2021 Golden Globes are virtual this year, doesn’t mean that there wasn’t a number of fashion-forward looks thanks to the celebrities “in attendance.” Cynthia Erivo, who was nominated last year as both a singer and actress for her role in Harriet, is the perfect example. All eyes were on her as she wore a stunning green gown on the red carpet, and then to present.
Erivo first debuted the sculptural look, expertly assembled by her stylist Jason Bolden, on Instagram. “I’m just going to leave this here,” she captioned a slow-motion video of herself walking out before doing a twirl decked out for the award show. Not only is the A-line dress a standout look due to its unmissable lime green color, but also because of its unexpected details like the shorter hemline, visible piping, and scuba fabric. What’s more, the gown comes straight from the Valentino Spring 2021 Couture collection that debuted just last month.
Erivo completed the look with sky-high, silver platform heels and cream, opera-length leather gloves hitting at just above the elbow — both of which also appeared on the runway — and a collection of earrings paired with a statement septum ring. This isn’t the first time that Erivo has wowed award show-goers and viewers (see: the sequin Thom Browne gown at the Golden Globes last year) with her immaculate sense of style. Award show after award show, Erivo chooses unforgettable ensembles that not only capture trends of the moment but are also timeless.
She may not be nominated for an award this time around, but one thing we do know is that it wouldn’t have been an award show without Erivo taking to the red carpet to show us just how you create an unforgettable fashion moment.
“10 years later and it still (sorta) fits,” Jones wrote alongside a throwback photo of herself wearing the red Versace cutout gown then and now. Not one to be left out, Shipka reprised her Golden Globes look — a velvet mini dress with a ruffled collar — as well. “I heard we’re putting on our Golden Globes looks from 10 years ago,” Shipka wrote in her Instagram post, adding her own photo alongside Jones’ picture and the throwback photo of the two of them wearing the dresses when she was 11.
“I believe this is called upcycling now,” Jones joked in Shipka’s Instagram comments. Fans of Mad Men flooded their Instagram posts demanding their outfits get an award.
In 2011, Mad Men was nominated for Best Drama Series, Jon Hamm was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, and Elisabeth Moss was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series. And even though the show didn’t win that year, it swept the same category earlier, in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
With COVID-19 forcing actors who attend award shows to continuously get creative with how they dress for the red carpet, taking a trip down memory lane is one way to keep things fresh while virtually attending from home.
With any luck, the former Drapers have sparked a trend and we’ll see some more throwbacks throughout the night.

It’s hard to believe that last year’s Golden Globes saw Hollywood’s biggest stars meeting in one place — maskless in couture — to glide down the red carpet, hug each other even, and then sit inches away from each other to eat and drink in one not-so-ventilated room. Good times. This year, like most of the award shows that followed the 2020 Golden Globes, things will look significantly different. Airing on Sunday night, the show, which will be hosted on two separate coasts by comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, won’t obviously include a true red carpet. That said, we are expecting plenty of fashion moments nonetheless. After all, even during a pandemic, celebrities love to make a statement. We’re looking at you, Billy Porter.
As for the other notables: Regina King, the director of One Night In Miami, chose a one-shoulder St. John maxi dress that would be perfect for a post-pandemic vacation; The Great’s Elle Fanning tuned in from London in a custom Gucci gown that put her hot pink corset dress from the show's finale to shame; and Emma Corrin put together an extravagant bow look that was every bit as stunning as the actress's Princess Diana-inspired costumes fromThe Crown. And those are just the highlights.
Find out what all your favorite stars wore for the first big award show of 2021, red carpet or no red carpet, ahead.
