March 22, 2021 at 07:09PM

25 Plus-Size Shops That Aren’t Fast Fashion

Independent fashion retail, like many industries, has been hit hard by the pandemic, with many businesses like Sies Marjan, Need Supply, Totokaelo, Cushnie, and Bird in Brooklyn forced to close doors in the last year. That’s why supporting small businesses is essential right now. This is especially true for shops that cater toward plus-size shoppers, a major segment of the U.S. population — 67% of women in the U.S. wear a size 14 or up — that is rarely the fashion industry’s focus of attention. That said, finding small, plus-size clothing retailers to shop from can be a daunting task, leading many to default to fast fashion instead.

One look at Twitter confirms this, with many people asking their followers this question: Where are all the plus-size clothing brands that aren’t fast fashion? One of them is Guadalupe “Lupe” Soto, a 22-year-old woman from Anaheim, California, who in December tweeted asking for small brand recommendations: “I wanna support more plus-sized businesses cause I don’t really see many and I wish I did as a plus-size gal myself.”

“I prefer to shop small businesses for environmental purposes, [because] fast fashion brands contribute to climate change, as well as worker exploitation,” Lupe tells Refinery29. “This year I tried my best to refrain from fast fashion and have been shopping for clothes from thrift shops and secondhand stores.”

Since the pandemic began, many people similarly have chosen to re-evaluate their consumption habits and educate themselves on the environmental waste and unethical practices that are tied to fast fashion corporations. But given how few brands cater to plus-size women, giving up fast fashion, which is also affordable, is not easy for anyone above a size 14. Still, many are not deterred. “Moving forward, I know I want to put my money in the pockets of people who really need it and small brands that exemplify everything I stand for,” says Lupe.

With that in mind, we compiled a list of our go-to indie shops — some that sell new items, others vintage, including Lupe's Depop store. Ahead, 25 plus-size brands and retailers to support now.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

BAACAL

Named after Lauren Bacall, a movie star in the '40s known for breaking the rules, BAACAL is a fashion brand with the same against-the-status-quo mentality. Designed by Cynthia Vincent, the brand offers high-end fashions in sizes 10 to 22, which they say is the "true majority." "I wanted to make a brand from my point of view; where I 'fit' into fashion," Vincent said in a press release. "It was incredibly difficult to find high-quality investment pieces beyond a size 12. Knowing that the average American woman is a size 16, I wanted to create a brand for women like me."

In Tokyo, Street Style Stars Have Perfected The Art Of Layering

Paris Fashion Week may have closed out the official Fashion Month calendar earlier this month, but unofficially, as seen on the streets of Tokyo this week, there was still plenty of fashion to come. With coronavirus under control in Tokyo, the city hosted an in-person Fashion Week for fashion brands like Hyke and Tae Ashida, and show-goers arrived in the streets of the fashion capital dressed not only their best, but their warmest, too, layering dresses over dresses and sweaters over blouses with ease. Whereas we expect that all street style stars this time of year have on a few layers of Heattech underneath their on-trend ensembles, this display was different. In Tokyo, there’s more to layering than just the simple addition of base layers.

Outside of shows, street style stars in the bustling city styled themselves in ways to combat any and all possible weather conditions, piling on knit boleros, varsity jackets, quilted jackets, and turtlenecks — all of which could be shaken off and stored in their tote bags when no longer necessary. It’s a foolproof way to dress during winter.

Ahead, see how street stylers at Tokyo Fashion Week tackle layering.

Bella Thorne Is Engaged — & Her Pear-Shaped Engagement Ring Is A Blinder

On Saturday, Bella Thorne and Italian singer Benjamin Mascolo, who’ve been linked since spring of 2019, announced that they were engaged via Mascalo’s Instagram. The official post, a three-pic slideshow of the couple with a detailed explanation of the movie-themed engagement sequence and a collection of photos from the couple’s two-year-long relationship on Mascalo’s stories, was accompanied by the caption: “She said yes.”

Following the announcement, Thorne took to her own Instagram to give her 24.3 million followers a better look at the teardrop, or pear-shaped, diamond ring. “He knows exactly my style,” she wrote on a close-up video of the engagement ring.

According to Mike Fried, the CEO of jewelry brand The Diamond Pro, that “style” is, specifically, a “pear-shaped diamond surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds.” The halo gives the ring “plenty of sparkle,” he added. It’s also set on a diamond pavé band. By Fried’s estimation, the center diamond is at least four carats, which makes the ring’s total valuation $150,000 or more.

Though pear-shaped diamonds themselves aren’t particularly rare, according to The Diamond Pro, finding one that’s properly cut is — much more so than round brilliant or princess-cut diamonds. That hard-to-find quality is likely why so many celebrities want one, with the likes of Cardi B, Sophie Turner, and Victoria Beckham all choosing pear-shaped diamonds for their ring fingers. (Although, it’s important to mention that Beckham’s shares that real estate with 14 other engagement rings from husband David Beckham — a true Diamond Pro.)
