Paloma Elsesser Brought Back Aaliyah’s Dress From The 2000 VMAs

This weekend, Paloma Elsesser got dressed up to celebrate the wedding of actress and producer Tiffany Lighty and skateboarder Nick Katz. For the outdoor ceremony, the supermodel (with the help of her stylist Eric McNeal) chose a gold-and-black, tiger-striped slip dress with a cowl neck and an asymmetric hem lined with matching fur. “Thee dress for thee wedding,” she captioned an Instagram slideshow that showed off her dress and fishnet heels. “Love u 5ever more,” she finished, tagging the couple. While the Roberto Cavalli gown is very on-trend for today, thanks to its color and silhouette, the dress was designed more than 20 years ago for the Italian designer’s fall ‘00 collection — and it has quite the red carpet history.

Following her post, Antoine Gregory, the founder of Black Fashion Fair, took to Twitter to share the backstory of Elsesser’s dress. In 2000, the same year the dress was first presented in a myriad of colors on Cavalli’s runway, it was worn to the MTV VMAs by singer and actress Aaliyah. Taking home three VMAs for the “Try Again” music video, she paired the dress with strappy black sandals.

“I’ve always been obsessed with [Aaliyah’s] look,” Elsesser told Vogue, confirming that it wasn’t accidental. “It spoke to an era of cool regality that made the ’90s so iconic, and Aaliyah is the image of this moment that will always be sacred to me.” According to Elsesser, she sent a screenshot of the singer wearing the dress to McNeal, who, within two days, had it delivered to her for the wedding.

Aaliyah wasn’t the only ‘90s style icon to don the dress in its original heyday. Singer-rapper Eve also donned the Cavalli dress, although in green and with black boots, to the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards in 2000.

Over 3,000 Items Are On Sale At Shopbop Right Now

With a new season and, for some of us, a new lease on life rapidly rounding the corner, we’ve all got our eyes on some fresh warm-weather buys — that we may or may not be compiling into a hefty Pinterest board shimmering with spring must-haves. Of course, it’s mostly a pipe dream. Our wish lists are simply pie-in-the-sky collections of all the goods we’d cart up if money was no object: delicate, wear-everyday fine jewelry; roomy-legged denim silhouettes, and designer clogs. While our fashion hankerings are normally left pretty unfulfilled, certain seasonal sales make the wishes feel a little bit more like a dream come true — and one such markdown marathon, Shopbop’s just-launched Style Event, has put some of our vision-boarded items within arms reach. The buy-more-get-more event offers shoppers a 15% discount on orders of $200 or more; a 20% discount on orders $500 and up; or a whopping 25% discount when your cart totals $800+ — all by using discount code STYLE.

While we’re certainly not buying up everything in sight, the deals offer us the ability to pay a little less for those luxury buys that we’ve been eyeing for months; whether it’s a floaty pink top from outre Danish brand Stine Goya, Simon Miller’s tangerine-colored leather baguette, or Rachel Comey’s legendary, perfectly-faded Legion Jeans. Don’t worry: in addition to all the higher-ticket luxury markdowns, there are plenty of bundle-able sale buys from more affordable brands like Levi’s, Madewell, Veja, and Z Supply. The sale only lasts until Thursday, April 16, and predictably, some of the most popular inventory — premium denim and gauzy knitwear — is starting to dwindle. However, there are still plenty of naked sandals, statement handbags, and picnic-perfect frocks in the mix, so hop on over to Shopbop to refresh your rotation of wardrobe staples just in time for spring.

Phoebe Dynevor Traded Bridgerton Pastels For A Puff-Sleeved LBD At The BAFTAs

On Sunday, the buzziest names in TV and film gathered — some via Zoom, some in-person — at London’s Royal Albert Hall for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards. This year, BAFTA attendees were tasked with dressing sustainably for the event, which led to Celeste wearing a gown from green fashion brand Dilara Findikoglu, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas donning a Roland van Der Kemp two-piece from the designer’s ethical fall ’20 couture collection. Another best-dressed winner? Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynevor, who swapped out her on-screen pastels for a custom LBD by Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière.

For her first in-person red carpet appearance since the Regency-era series was released in December 2020 (and subsequently watched by over 82 million people), Dynevor wore a black, one-shouldered gown with a single long, statement sleeve and a corseted bodice. With the dress — which apart from the color, gave some serious Daphne Bridgerton vibes — Dynevor wore diamond-and-emerald drop earrings and a flower-shaped cocktail ring, both of which are also Louis Vuitton.

British actresses Ashley Madekwe and Cynthia Erivo both, too, wore Louis Vuitton for the award show. Madekwe, who was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in County Lines, wore a chartreuse, cut-out gown custom-made by Ghesquière. Meanwhile, Erivo — with the help of stylist Jason Bolden — chose a beaded mini dress from the brand’s fall ’21 collection.

The Nostalgic Outfit That Helped Get Me Through The Pandemic

It’s an accepted truth that we inevitably age out of whatever we adored as children, whether that’s super-sugary, dye-saturated cereal or miniature toy building blocks. But in times of turmoil and uncertainty (see: the last year), it’s not at all uncommon to reach for things that once provided comfort. For body-positive influencer Noelle Downing, that was matching sets — a look she grew up wearing but then abandoned, declaring them “gross,” only to now rediscover them as an adult.

“My style has changed so much,” she says of the shift in her aesthetic in the last year. “I’ve completely gone back to basics — it’s become more relaxed. If I don’t feel comfortable in it, then I don’t even want it.”

And coordinated sets check off all the boxes: They’re comfortable, they’re versatile, and they somehow inexplicably straddle the line between loungewear, activewear, and sleepwear that’s acceptable to wear outdoors. “There’s something so cute about wearing two-pieces made of the same fabric or pattern,” Downing continues. “And because they break at the waist, they look good on everyone. It creates a ‘look’ even if it’s a super-simple print or a solid color.”

She wears her co-ords without any accoutrements at home — simple and fuss-free — but dresses them up with layers and stacks of necklaces for outings. In partnership with Macy’s, Downing shows us her favorite sets and how she styles them — click through to shop her looks.
"This is my absolute favorite set — the fit is amazing, the fabric is soft, and I can mix and match it with pieces in my closet," Downing says. "I also love styling it with sneakers, an oversized dad shirt, and layered necklaces for an effortlessly cool vibe."

"Baby blue is one of the colors I feel really good in, which is why I wear this one on repeat at home while I'm working, lounging on the sofa, or hanging outside on the balcony," Downing says. "I'm also all for the return of tube tops, and I really like pairing this one with sweat shorts for a cute-but-comfortable look."

"Nothing gets me motivated to work out quite like a matching set — and when I wear this lavender one, I can see a huge difference in my performance," Downing says. "Also, it's versatile — I can throw on a denim jacket and wear it for a coffee run. I can't wait to wear it on a hike soon."
