How To Style Denim For Festivals: From Jorts To Canadian Tuxedos

Weekend one of Coachella brought us all the dramatic looks we were craving, from the performers and celebrity attendees to the crowds of stylish festival goers. Naturally, it sparked the urge to start planning our own spring and summer festival outfits, whether for the second weekend of “Gagachella” or any upcoming desert, city, or beach concerts.

With so many festival fashion trends and aesthetics to choose from — western cowgirl, rainbow raver, retro hippie — there’s one wardrobe anchor that fits every vibe: denim. From ‘70s bell bottoms to ‘90s vests, denim has always been a go-to for concert style, and now, there are even more playful ways to wear it.

As a denim devotee figuring out my own festival lineup, I decided to make it the centerpiece of several outfits. From one-and-done jumpsuits to matching sets, trending jorts, and unexpected accessories, I put the tried-and-true staple to the test. Here’s how it went — and how you can do the same.

Festival Outfit Idea: Denim Overalls & Jumpsuits

If you don’t want to stress over putting an outfit together — or worry about anything slipping down (or riding up!) while you’re mid-dance sesh — a one-piece is the way to go. Long-sleeved styles also offer coverage from the sun and bugs!

I styled a white barrel-leg jumpsuit from Madewell with a western twist: a studded belt, Tecovas cowboy booties, and an Away cargo pack. No matter your jumpsuit choice, adding tons of accessories is the key.

For a breezier vibe, I went with light-wash Cider overalls with bows tied down the legs. Paired with a gingham Calpak water bottle holder and Nike Cortez sneakers, the look felt playful and picnic-ready. If a slightly undone look speaks to you — especially for showing off a statement top — unhook a strap and try a mesh layer, graphic tee, or bikini top underneath.

Festival Outfit Idea: Denim Jorts

Yes, jorts are back — and they’re the ultimate swap for traditional cutoffs that ride up or cause thigh chafing. The longer Bermuda length is perfect for long, sweaty festival days.

For one look, I styled a light-wash Pilcro pair (with a casual shoe lace tie) with sheer butter-yellow layers and matching Guess sunglasses. The unexpected color still pops — especially when paired with shiny metallic sneakers

I also played with white H&M jorts, styling them with a rainbow crochet top, patterned crossbody bag, and a printed headscarf for a colorful, seaside-ready vibe. Add a belly chain or bag charm hooked onto the belt loops for a creative twist.

Festival Outfit Idea: Denim-On-Denim Sets

A Canadian tuxedo moment always hits. Matching sets — jacket + jean, vest + short, or crop + skirt — are a foolproof way to make a statement without much effort.

One standout set I wore was a gradient-dyed shirt and wide-leg jean combo from Kenneth Cole.  I just buttoned the top at the neck to reveal a tank underneath, and slung on a Uniqlo mini bag. Platform slingbacks finished the look — the only sandals I trust on uneven festival ground.

I also took a Buffalo skort set for a spin, which looks like a mini skirt in the front but offers full coverage in the back. Paired with a raffia bucket hat and Teva sandals, it gave breezy, beach festival energy. But you could easily take this look in a rave direction with Kandi bracelets and platform sneakers.

Festival Outfit Idea: Denim Accessories

Want to keep your denim touch subtle? Try it in the form of accessories. Baseball and cowboy hats, tote bags, sneakers, statement belts, or even a denim phone case can tie your look together without being the whole story.

I went full-on with mine, styling multiple denim accessories at once, but you can always mix them into your outfits sparingly for a fun pop that looks and feels festival-ready.

Society6’s Festival Edit Is Here To Inspire You

Aligne’s New Arrivals Feature New Versions Of The Viral Waistcoat

Welcome to New Arrivals, where R29 editors test out the latest pieces from their favorite brands and share their top looks. Whether you’re overwhelmed by the number of places to shop or trying to hone in your personal style, come along as we explore ‘fits, fabrics, styling potential, and more by sorting through the virtual and IRL shelves at our go-to shopping destinations.

Ever since British brand Aligne launched in 2020, it has made a name for itself, amongst influencers and fashion insiders on both sides of the pond, for its signature waisted blazers. But while the label may have first become known for its collarless blazers and sleeveless vests — which are now available in a variety of colors and fabrications and are considered a fashion must-have by several Refinery29 editors — over the last five years, it has become a go-to for trendy denim, work and weekend essentials, and even bridal wear.

But while Aligne is ubiquitous online, it wasn’t until April that the popular brand opened its first brick-and-mortar space: a New York City pop-up that will run through summer. To see what the brand has in (literal) store for spring and summer, I scanned through the newest offering. Ahead, every Aligne item worth scooping for the warm-weather season ahead.

Editor note: All the items are pictured in US Size 6.

Aligne Dresses

From boldly colored (vibrant green! bright red! Barbie pink!) party dresses with puff sleeves and bow adornments to work-appropriate denim dresses and effortless linen frocks, there’s a variety of options in mini, midi, and maxi hemlines. My favorites included this light blue, drop-waist style (a big spring dress trend), which could work just as well for a weekend outing with flats as an occasion dress for a shower or a summer party with heels.

Aligne Waistcoats & Tops

Despite already owning a long-sleeve blazer and a sleeveless linen vest from the brand, I still can’t get enough of Aligne’s most popular top silhouette. (This explains why I walked out of the store with the above sweater and the olive-colored Leo waistcoat.) The newest drop includes knit, linen, and boucle versions of the viral Daphne style in several colorways (including the uber-popular butter yellow). Other new Aligne tops include more casual striped tees, polo shirts, and cutesy peplum blouses.

Aligne Denim

Insiders know that Aligne’s denim is top-notch. Just see the following that its barrel-leg jeans have. (The style also made R29’s 2024 MVP Awards list!) While the trending denim silhouette is currently available in white and khaki (seen in the photo further up), Aligne also boasts statement denim in the form of diamante jeans, a variety of jean dresses, and matching separates in the fabric that looks anything but casual at the hands of the brand.

Aligne Skirts

This skirt has pockets! I repeat: This skirt has pockets. In addition to boasting every woman’s favorite skirt and dress feature, the elastic-waist midi silhouette looks just as good with the brand’s signature blazers (I love the two styled with cowboy boots) as its more fanciful tops. In addition to versatile cotton styles, Aligne’s skirt selection includes mini and maxi styles in summer-appropriate denim and linen.

Aligne Bottoms

It’s almost linen season, and Aligne has the perfect wide-leg drawstring pants (pictured above but also available in a pistachio green). In addition to a more casual selection of bottoms — note the matching short sets! — the brand’s new arrivals include workwear trousers and ponte barrel-leg sweatpants that are perfect for travel.

Aligne Bridal

The newest Aligne launch, the bridalwear edit is more suited for the events surrounding the wedding (engagement party, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, bachelorette, etc.) rather than the big day (though the mini would look cute at a courthouse nuptial). That said, thanks to the brand using its most popular silhouettes for the debut collection, the styles — made up of two mini dresses, a peplum top, and a blazer in a satin, white fabric — could double as summer occasion dressing pieces as well.
