We’re well into “brat summer,” a season defined by Charli XCX dance-pop anthems, a viral “Apple” TikTok dance, and an unapologetically you energy. And two months after the queen of indie sleaze fashion and meme culture released her sixth studio album Brat, an EDM-pop phenomenon that has ushered in a viral fashion aesthetic, there’s no sign of it coming to an end just yet. In the last few weeks alone, Charli XCX has dropped another remix, with Billie Eilish for the song “Guess,” and unofficially endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in a tweet by labeling her a “brat.”

What does brat style entail, exactly? It’s a bold punk, Y2K fashion aesthetic that calls for trendy hot pants, Von Dutch trucker hats, and neon Brat Green. It spans from casual graphic baby tees during the day to sheer black tights (preferably ripped) at night for that “365 party girl” vibe. But most of all, being a brat is about having the unabashed confidence of an It girl, like Charli XCX and her Brat remix collaborators Addison Rae, Lorde, and Eilish. So upgrade your summer outfits with skin-revealing styles and trendy accessories that’ll help boost your confidence.

Read on to find styles inspired by Brat song lyrics and Charli XCX’s outfits to add to your brat shopping starter pack, get you “looking like an icon,” or build your concert outfit for the  North American “Sweat Tour” with Troye Sivan starting in September.

Brat Aesthetic: Neon Green Everything

The easiest way to take on the Brat Girl summer aesthetic is by wearing a chartreuse or neon green color reminiscent of the album cover art, which Charli said took 65 shades to narrow down to “the final most ultimate most brat green,” in an Instagram post.

Many of your favorite brands and retailers are selling bright green clothing and accessories, so you don’t have to look far. We love the idea of a lime green dress, but if you’re looking to tip-toe into this Brat trend (we see you, minimalists), we recommend going for accessories (like trendy handbags and statement earrings), shoes (architectural heels or retro sneakers), or cheerful swimsuits. Then, paint on a trendy “grasshopper green” manicure, and take on the rest of the summer in saturated-green style.

Brat Aesthetic: Wrap-Around Sunglasses

Embrace the Y2K aesthetic with wrap-around sunglasses. Pick from a style that gives a luxe, futuristic Matrix vibe… or a gas station-chic athleisure look. Charli has been seen wearing the retro sunglass style in black with crop top-and-jean combos, patterned mini dresses, and even evening gowns. You, too, can cart up sleek black wrap-around sunglasses that can go from day to night (we recommend wearing them indoors and out clubbing, while scream-singing “Club classics” like Charli). Opt for clear, mirrored sports sunglasses for casual summer outfits or pink shield sunglasses for a pop star-approved look.

Brat Aesthetic: Asymmetrical Ruffle Dresses

What does a mean girl look like, exactly? According to Charli, she’s probably “in a sheer white dress, wearing last night’s makeup. All coquettish in the pictures with the flash on.” Oh, and she “worships Lana Del Rey in her airpods.” Okay, we don’t condone being a mean girl, but we do endorse being a party girl who listens to Lana and Charli. Take the pop star’s lead and wear sheer mini asymmetrical dresses or mesh midi ruffle dresses that give off a feminine and carefree vibe because, according to Charli, “everything is romantic.”

Brat Aesthetic: Sheer Tights & Socks

Yes, you can make tights work in the summertime. Channel Charli and wear black sheer tights under hot shorts or summer dresses. You can find more summer-appropriate styles like white lace, glitter fishnet, or colorful tights. If you want to copy the “I might say something stupid” lyric, “I snag my tights out on the lawn chair,” buy a pair of pre-distressed tights (or rip up a pair of old, forgotten stockings to revive them with a pop-punk life). If tights aren’t your vibe, try a pair of sheer or lace-y knee-high socks like the ones Charli wore to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships (see above).

Brat Aesthetic: White Tank Tops & Graphic Baby Tees

When asked what Charli’s Brat essentials are in a BBC Sounds interview, the singer suggested the aesthetic teeters between “quite luxury and so trashy” and that she’d wear “a strappy white top with no bra.” This is exactly what she wore in the viral 360 music video, a look that she styled with black briefs and sheer black tights, but even before that, she wore a tattered T-shirt-inspired gown to the 2024 Met Gala (above). For everyday life, opt for a classic white tank top to wear on its own throughout the hot summer or to serve as a staple layering piece. And if you’re looking for something more playful and kitschy, take inspiration from Charli, who sings about baby tees in 360, and her fans, who have been wearing Brat-inspired graphic T-shirts.

Brat Aesthetic: Trucker Hats

The song “Von Dutch” transports us back to the early 2000s when celebrities like Paris Hilton and Gwen Stefani proudly wore trucker hats from the brand. Today, Charli sings “Von Dutch, cult classic, but I still pop.” Wear that Von Dutch hat you have in the back of your closet, or cart up new ones similar to the nostalgic style. To bring even more kitschiness into your Brat starter pack, pick a style with cheeky text, like the neon green “Brat” cap Charli was seen holding. Personally, we are partial to a “Ciao” hat for blending the European summer and brat girl aesthetics together.

Brat Aesthetic: Hot Pants & Micro Shorts

Whether she’s on stage, in a music video, or in an editorial spread, Charli has been embracing the micro-short trend during her brat era. Most recently, she stepped out for her 32nd birthday party in a button-front pair. She has also styled the daring shorts with fitted tanks and pointed heels as well as oversized jackets and chunky boots. In day-to-day scenarios, keep it classic with versatile black short shorts… or go bold with sequined, suede, or tulle styles. If you’re still feeling hesitant about the leg-baring trend, consider pairing your hot pants over tights, with a long trench coat, or under a mesh dress for an equally trendy naked dress look.

Brat Aesthetic: Black Knee-High Boots

Charli XCX has made a case for black knee-high boots in the summer. In a video interview with British GQ, the singer said she can’t live without her Prada pair, which she revealed she snagged from The RealReal. She explained that the flat-heeled boots are both rave-ready and long-walk-ready. However, she’s also been seen wearing stiletto sock boots and slouchy, fold-over heeled boots. We’re all about this Brat trend because knee-high boots are a great staple shoe that’ll allow you to continue your Brat summer into the fall and beyond.

Tower28 Makewaves Lengthening + Volumizing Mascara

"As someone with short, pin-straight lashes, I was thoroughly impressed by how much the product fanned out my lashes and emphasized them without clumping up. The comb-like straight brush is very easy to use, and the product comes right off with a makeup remover wipe, unlike other volumizing mascaras that require a lot of tugging (and can lead to a loss of lashes) to thoroughly rinse off." — Venus Wong, Senior Travel Writer

Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment

"I don’t love saccharinefruity flavors (I'm partial to the caramel-flavored PLT), but Rhode's interpretation pleasantly surprised me. It doesn’t taste like artificial strawberry, as I feared, but rather like very fancy, possibly French, strawberry jam. It may have looked the same on as other Rhode flavors, but in my soul, I felt like a total Strawberry Girl. (You can also layer it over a cherry-red lip tint for extra points here.) While it's sold out for now, there's plenty of other TikTok-approved flavors to choose from." — Karina Hoshikawa, Senior Writer

Supergoop! 100% Mineral (Re)setting Powder Face Sunscreen

"A while ago I saw a TikTok of an influencer wearing Supergoop!’s powder face sunscreen… as a scalp sunscreen, and was immediately… influenced! My hair gets oily so quickly, and applying a sunscreen spray to my part always makes it worse during the summer. I purchased this Supergoop! SPF in the translucent shade, which initially looks a lot like a dry shampoo when dabbed onto the center part of my scalp. I love the twist bottle and soft brush, which easily locks and unlocks for mess-free application. It’s great to use before leaving the house, but also small enough to throw in your beach tote or handbag for re-applications." — Victoria Montalti, Associate Fashion Writer

Mustard Made Lockers

"I’ve been wanting to organize my home office/craft room for a while now — as they say, cluttered room, cluttered mind. I saw this video from Dani Klarić, an interior decorator whose bright, bold, dopamine style I love. She was building a set of Mustard Made’s locker furniture in a vibrant lilac shade.

What really got me hooked though was a video from one of my own real-life friends, the amazing Susannah Studio, who is a London-based creative and designer. Just like me, Susie was looking for a place to store her craft supplies, and the beautiful color and sleek design of the locker just fit so well in her colorful room. I was instantly sold and I splurged on The Skinny in blush (a tall, light pink locker) and The Midi in butter (a double door cabinet in light yellow).

They were super easy to put together myself and, when empty, lightweight enough to move around. Inside though they hold so much — I’ve now got homes for all my craft supplies, my vinyl collection and record cleaning kit, and office stationary. My office is now a lot nicer a space to work and feels more open. I’m definitely going to invest in more Mustard Made pieces in the future!" —Esther Newman, Affiliate Writer

Hion Anti-Motion Sickness Smart Glasses

These glasses look pretty goofy, but hear me out: They were the only thing that kept me from retching during a painfully long ride to the Hamptons through NYC traffic. The movement of the blue liquid creates the illusion of a horizon in the corner of my eyes, making me feel a lot less dizzy when I get motion sickness. Hydro Flask 40 oz All Around Travel Tumbler

"Water bottles with handles and an exterior straw never really interested me; I’m more for a Nalgene type with no frills that is easily washed. But recently, I got this big boy tumbler in the prettiest blue and I kinda dig it as a house water bottle, kinda like house slippers, just for inside the home. The tumbler is very convenient because 1. It holds a lot of liquid, be it watermelon juice or water, for fewer trips to my sink (NYC tap water is great), and 2. The handle is a good size for my hand. The bottle, while large, is very easy to clean as the straw bit comes off in easily washable parts to prevent gross buildup, plus it’s dishwasher-safe too!" — Becca Sax, Affiliate Coordinator

Starface Hydro-Stars + Big Yellow

"The magnetic compact (with a built-in mirror) is total genius (not to mention practical), and the star-shaped patches aren't just adorable, they also help adhere to the shape of your zit. However, one of the best things about pimple patches is that they physically prevent the wearer from picking — and the more you can encourage people to wear them (aka, make them cute), the better. Laniege Lip Mask

"One night with a little of this slathered on was enough to make my lips buttery smooth and a lot less flaky. (That'll be the hyaluronic acid.) Sure, it's pricier compared to your standard pot of Vaseline, but it doesn’t leave the same sticky residue that I sometimes experience. This means you won’t wake up to hair stuck to your lips — the worst feeling. Plus, it makes me feel fancy having a special, yummy-smelling pot of goodness to finish off my evening routine with. So far, the fruity flavors Mango and Berry are my favorites." —Esther Newman, Affiliate Writer

Crocs Classic Clog

"Honestly, I could pen an ode to Crocs and Jibbitz charms. At this point, they've reached cult-like status and are borderline unhinged — in the best way possible. While Crocs has an extremely extensive selection of official Jibbitz charms (including ones part of fire collabs with the likes of iconic brands like Peeps & Coca-Cola, not to mention celeb fans like SZA and Post Malone) the "bootleg" market has created a landscape where just about any cartoon character and pop culture motif has gotten the Jibbitz treatment. And honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.  (Side note: Since Crocs are so buoyant and breathable, I actually think they are the best beach shoe — also, they are super easy to clean.)" —Karina Hoshikawa, Senior Writer

Baby Foot Original Foot Peel Exfoliator

"The Baby Foot, the myth, the legend. I've been a oyalist for years now — and, honestly, every other foot peel out there comes second fiddle. I can barely remember when my last salon pedicure was, but if you're on the fence about going into the spa, then this peel is a formidable foe against calluses and generally lackluster feet. I like to pop the serum-soaked booties on and queue up some Netflix; one hour later, rinse off and play a fun waiting game that lasts four to six days. After which, you'll begin to notice flakes and/or sheets of skin peeling off and leaving behind a layer of fresh, supple foot skin." —Karina Hoshikawa, Senior Writer

I will say they're a bit plushier than some of my narrow shoes will allow, but length-wise these are exactly what I was looking for: They come up just above the ankle to be a little dorky, but not SO high that they make my short legs look even shorter." —Jinnie Lee, Freelance Fashion Writer

PinkCherry From A Distance Remote Panty Vibrator

"There are many appeals to the vibrating panty. First and foremost, secret pleasure. Discreet public play adds a layer of danger: The risk of being caught increases sensations. Exhibitionism is a popular kink for a reason. Users also love being able to hand off control to a partner, so they never know where, when, or what kind of stimulation will come their way. What I realized [while using the panty vibrator] is that getting off in public spaces isn't for me, but that's fine. Because I learned that I enjoyed building anticipation more than enough. Though the toy claims to have sensations that range from 'warm lips sucking' to 'toe-curling,' I found that it leaned far to the latter for my own taste. Where was this when I scrambled to clean the kitchen last minute upon hearing my mom come home after work as a kid? Where was this when I feather-dusted my windows and sneezed a good seven times? Valentino Twin Liner Gel & Liquid Eyeliner

"I am legitimately shocked at how good the Valentino liner is. Not only was it easy to apply, but — to quote the great American poet Taylor Swift, it draws a 'cat eye sharp enough to kill a man.' It made me feel instantly bolstered and badass, like I could do anything I wanted. I even ran my finger across the lid to see if it would smudge or budge, and that liner was solid. No movement whatsoever. In fact, a full day later and several handwashings, the pencil liner has long worn off my hand but the liquid end still remains (slightly faded down and a bit worn, but there nonetheless). "I'm giving the Ninja Creami a strong two thumbs-up. TikTok calls it a kitchen essential for summer, and while I don't know that I need the Creami, I certainly enjoyed using it. The novelty of making icy treats with just a few simple steps did genuinely feel as easy as counting to three. Functional? Absolutely. Easy to use? Most definitely. Easy to clean? 100%. Though I found it fun to use in a multitude of ways, I do think it shines most for people who have dietary restrictions that prevent them from enjoying ice cream. By controlling exactly what goes into the base, it's especially useful for those who can't have dairy or sugar (it's really popped off in the bariatric community), and helps them enjoy ice cream in a new way." —Charlotte Lewis, Sex & Wellness Writer

Transitional Weather Wardrobe Staples To Wear From Now Through Fall

Don’t get us wrong, we’re enjoying summer as much as everyone else, but we’re also already looking ahead to cooler temperatures, particularly all the chic and cozy fall outfits we’ll be wearing come autumn But what about that (somewhat dreaded) in-between phase? When the hottest days are behind us but it’s not quite sweater weather yet? Ahead of that late August-through-early October phase, it’s time to refresh your closet with essentials for easy-to-throw-together transitional weather outfits.

On cooler summer days, you will need light knits that can be worn on their own or layered over camis; on warmer fall days, you may want a pair of tights to wear underneath a mini skirt or, perhaps, trendy open-toe clogs in place of sandals. From versatile T-shirts and denim jackets to midi skirts and ballet flats, we’ve compiled a mix of foolproof summer-to-fall tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, shoes, and accessories that will take you day to night. Scroll on to see these and other clothing items and accessories you can add to your closet right now and wear into fall.

Transitional Weather Tops

When the weather starts to cool, layering is key. You can never go wrong with a crisp white button-down shirt, no matter the season. Opt for one that’s slightly oversized so you can wear it open over a tank top or closed with a cardigan sweater thrown over the shoulders. Classic T-shirts, like the one below, are another tried-and-true addition. Stick to a bright white color, creamy off-white color, and fall-appropriate brown or heather grey for maximum versatility. Other trends to partake in for the remainder of summer and beyond include vests and waistcoats (which you can wear on their own when it’s warm and layer over long-sleeve tops when it’s cool), and sleeveless sweaters.

Transitional Weather Pants & Skirts

For bottoms, you may want to stick to longer hemlines when cooler weather hits, moving away from denim shorts and mini skirts and toward wide-leg jeans and midi and maxi skirts. While denim can be worn effortlessly across all four seasons, styles like barrel-leg jeans and maxi denim skirts continue to trend — and are particularly great for transitional dressing since they leave some breathing room for your legs. Silky midi skirts, particularly in more muted hues, are also just as versatile. Wear them with sandals and sneakers in the summer or heels and boots in the winter (and add a pair of tights underneath if necessary). Or go for a pair of lounge-y tapered pants, like the ones that are a part of the Refinery29 reader-favorite Free People knit sweater set below.

Transitional Weather Dresses & Jumpsuits

Another simple way to create a transitional weather outfit is by sticking to a dress or another one-and-done piece, like a jumpsuit or overalls. In terms of fall dresses, we recommend going for sleeveless, lightweight ribbed dresses that can be paired with a cardigan or jacket. Midi shirt dresses are another great staple, especially for the office.  But if you’re more of a pants person, consider finding a versatile jumpsuit that can be dressed up (with heels) or down (with sneakers), or a durable pair of overalls that can be worn over a wool T-shirt or a thin sweater.

Transitional Outerwear

If you’re looking for outerwear that you wear time and time again, consider investing in a denim jacket (we are partial to the oversized style pictured above), shackets (the brilliant shirt-jacket hybrid), and other relaxed-fit jackets (like rain-resistant windbreakers and cropped utility jackets).

Transitional Weather Shoes

As the days and nights get less steamy, you’ll likely start stepping out of your summer sandals and into more closed-toe shoes. For an everyday shoe, go for a pair of seasonal-less white sneakers or neutral suede kicks, which are a big fall sneaker trend. If you’re looking for a slightly more elevated shoe that you can wear to work (and that gives more preppy fall vibes), consider heeled loafers or clogs (style with socks if you’re going for an open-toe pair). You’ll also continue seeing ballet flats grow more and more popular, so try a classic color for a year-round staple or bold metallic for a fun pop.

Transitional Weather Accessories

While handbags, hair accessories, and jewelry pieces are cross-seasonal, some styles are especially versatile and great for taking you from summer to fall. Square scarves are a travel must-have which also makes them the perfect (unexpected) transitional weather accessory. Pick a patterned or embroidered design and wear it as a headscarf or bag handle charm to update your more uninspired outfit formulas. More classic wardrobe staple accessories include leather crossbody bags and fashion-forward baseball caps. And if you’re looking to stay on-trend, try a cute bow, trending leopard print, or mixed-metal jewelry to blend cool and warm tones (and cool and warm weather) this season.
