Zendaya Has Already Won The Emmy Awards With Her Red Carpet Look

Red carpet or no red carpet, Zendaya is taking her unofficial role as queen of only wearing showstopping looks very seriously. The Emmys might not be in person this year, but that will not keep the Euphoria star from debuting what she promises will be multiple looks throughout the evening’s proceedings.

“And so it begins…” the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award nominee teased on her Instagram Stories a couple of hours before the Emmy Awards began. For her first look, she wore a black-and-iris purple silhouette-centric gown with a plunging, squared-off neckline from Christopher John Rogers’ Fall Winter 2020 collection. Zendaya kept her hair in a simple, slicked-back low bun and accessorized with a stunning necklace by Bulgari featuring an assortment of purple, rosy pink, and emerald green jewels. Speaking of jewelry, Zendaya also wore not one, not two, but four rings by Bulgari. Each is a statement in its own right and each is covered in shimmering diamonds. To finish off the look, she wore black stiletto heels with bejeweled hearts.

Zendaya has made quite the name for herself appearing on red carpets over the years. Each time you think she can’t possibly outdo herself, she does so in a way that is breathtaking and original. She also does this with the help of her longtime stylist, Law Roach. The pair have gotten creating one-of-a-kind looks down to a science. I mean, who could forget her Emmy’s look last year where she single-handedly convinced everyone that not only do we need a Poison Ivy movie but that she was the only one we could ever see starring as the glamorous supervillain?

When pressed by E! News for spoilers on Zendaya’s look for the evening, Roach kept his lips sealed, instead coyly answering, “You’ll see.” The night is young and we haven’t seen everything the two style icons have planned, but if it is anything like her first look, it’s going to be a big night for television and fashion.

When Zendaya teases a mid-award show outfit change, she really did not prepare us. With her hair in large, blown-out curls loosely arranged in a high bun and faux fringe, the actress sat at home surrounded by her family and close friends in a spectacular ball gown as she became the youngest person to ever win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. While the skirt was black, polka-dotted, and full, it was counterbalanced by a cropped jeweled bodice tied together by a black halter strap. According to her stylist Roach, the dress was made custom by Giorgio Armani Prive and all of her jewelry was by Bulgari.

Regina King Changed Her Emmys Outfit To Make An Important Statement

Regina King used her spotlight at tonight’s Emmy Awards to pay tribute to Breonna Taylor and the Black Lives Matter movement. Rather than donning a dazzling gown or kicking back in a cozy pair of pajamas while accepting her award, King wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the words “SAY HER NAME” and a photo of Taylor whose death at the hands of police sparked widespread protests. King paired the statement-making shirt with a hot pink suit by Schiaparelli Couture.

King first promoted the T-shirt in August on Instagram. The shirt was created in partnership with the Breonna Taylor Foundation by Phenomenal Woman, an organization that brings awareness to social issues. All of the profits are donated to the Breonna Taylor Foundation.

“It’s been 150 days since Breonna Taylor was murdered in her sleep by Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison, and Myles Cosgrove – and her killers have not been charged,” King wrote on Instagram in August. “Too often Black women who die from police violence are often forgotten.”

Joining King in honoring Taylor, Uzo Aduba also wore a shirt with her name emblazoned across the front while accepting the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in Mrs. America.

Prior to accepting the award, King and her styling team Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald did a stunning photoshoot that showed King wearing a red carpet-worthy dress posted to her Instagram. The show-stopping blue dress is another piece by Schiaparelli Couture by Daniel Roseberry. The ballgown came from the designer’s Spring Summer 2020 collection

This year, King is nominated Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her role in HBO’s Watchmen which addressed racism that pervades the police force. The show also sheds light on the Tulsa massacre, a tragic incident that took place in 1921 when a mob of white residents attacked Black residents and businesses in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tracee Ellis Ross Matches Her Mask To Her Dress At The Emmys

It’s official. Tracee Ellis Ross has proven that masks can be a focal accessory in any red carpet look. Never before has PPE looked so fashionable and red carpet-ready.

The Black-ish star, who is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, stunned in a head-to-toe golden gown cascading down, from a plunging halter top to four gorgeous tiered skirt layers. Sticking with the metallic theme, Ross wore Jimmy Choo silver heels and a timeless, vintage Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger Hands necklace in 18k gold and platinum.

Her mask, in an eye-catching, iridescent gold color, could not be more perfectly paired with her look. “How fun to get dress up!” Ross captioned her Instagram slideshow. “Can’t say I miss the frenetic energy of the red carpet or wearing high heels, but boy do I miss a pretty dress!” Ross has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series three other times since 2016 and each year, she has graced every best-dressed list as a fan favorite.

Speaking of the dress, the gown comes right off the runway from French designer Alexandre Vauthier’s Fall 2020 collection. Each piece in the collection harkens back to two eras — Hollywood’s golden age and sartorial touchstones from the 1980s. The collection is full of exaggerated silhouettes and luminous fabrics, perfect for a red carpet.

Ross did briefly remove the mask to present the award for Outstanding Writer in a Comedy Series in person. As one of the few people actually taking the stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles this year, her whole outfit looked even more stunning live.

These Celebs Won Best Dressed At The Emmys, Even Without The Red Carpet

Tonight marks the 72nd annual Emmy Awards, the first award show of its kind since the pandemic took hold. Sure, there were the MTV Video Music Awards, which were broadcast live from multiple rooftops around New York City last month and were a success, but it’s the Emmys that are television’s most anticipated event. That said, tonight’s semi-virtual event — which will include Jimmy Kimmel hosting in an empty theatre and videographers dispatched to the winners for acceptance speeches — will be marked “TBD” until the credits roll around 11pm EST. One thing we were worried about was the lack of an Emmys red carpet, which for many viewers, is more important than the show itself. But, as proven by the looks we’ve already seen, just because the night’s fashion won’t look as what we’ve grown accustomed to at the last 72 Emmys, doesn’t mean that it won’t prevail.

Instead, tonight’s nominees — including Zendaya for Euphoria; Issa Rae for Insecure; Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Sandra Oh, and Jodie Comer for Killing Eve; Tracee Ellis Ross for black-ish; and more — will be (fingers crossed) greeted at home by camera crews upon their names being called. And if we’ve learned anything from their past trips down the Emmys red carpet, none of the above will settle for just okay looks for the occasion. Whether that means silky pajamas or couture gowns, only time will tell.

Ahead, find out what the stars of your favorite TV shows chose for the (very different) 2020 Emmys.

Zendaya in Christopher John Rogers

Red carpet or no, Zendaya wasn't going to miss a chance to show up on Emmys night in a standout look. While we wait for more looks — according to the Euphoria star's Instagram, this is just the first one — we'll be basking in the glory of this Christopher John Rogers masterpiece.

Regina King in Schiaparelli

Though we didn’t get the chance to see Watchmen star and Oscar winner Regina King walk the red carpet in a royal blue Schiaparelli gown as she hinted to on E!, what we did get was even better: A fuchsia suit from the same designer, which King wore over top of a black T-shirt that says, “Say Her Name" on it and features an image of Breonna Taylor.  Photographed by Refinery29/Courtesy of E!

H.E.R. in Custom Vera Wang

Last year, designer Vera Wang dressed Taraji P. Henson, Christina Applegate, and, of course, Zendaya for the Emmys. This year? Wang designed a custom fuchsia qipao-inspired dress and matching pant set, both of which include neon orange piping, for musician H.E.R., who is giving a "very emotional" performance tonight, according to her E! interview.

Yvonne Orji in Azzi & Osta

In addition to dressing Laverne Cox and Erin Lim for the 2020 Emmys, Azzi & Osta also put together Insecure star Yvonne Orji's one-shoulder burgundy gown, which she's wearing to celebrate her first Emmy nomination at a small, yet very "extra" party on location in Atlanta.

Jameela Jamil in Markarian

The Good Place star Jameela Jamil stuck to the dress code — "come as you are, but make an effort!" — pairing a casual pajama set with a rainbow sequin dressing gown courtesy of Markarian.
