Glass Handbags Are Trending — Here’s What To Consider Before Buying One

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – APRIL 03: Doja Cat attends the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 03, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic)

In March, singer Doja Cat walked the red carpet at the 2022 Grammy Awards, carrying a blue glass version of Coperni’s “Swipe” bag. Later, Kim Kardashian appeared at the 2022 Revolve Festival in California, wearing a silver metallic version, while her sister Kylie Jenner sported a clear one — making her Kylie Cosmetics products visible — to the premiere of the family’s new show The Kardashians

Since the new It-bag debuted in March during Coperni’s fall 2022 runway show on several models, including Gigi Hadid, celebrities have embraced the fragile and, frankly, confusing accessory. Handbags, after all, are theoretically meant to carry all our junk and essentials from a day at work to a night out. And while fashion has long maintained a history of impractical garments, this time, by simply experimenting with an unusual  material, Coperni is playing with our perception of what a bag can be.

The popular handbag is the result of a collaboration between Coperni and the glassware studio Heven, which also tapped Brooklyn-based glass artist Josh Raiffe for the partnership. Made from blown glass, artists Peter Dupont and Breanna Box used a thicker material than they typically do to make the bag durable and strong, which required them to utilize an air hose, instead of their mouths, to mold the glass. “We had to drill in and open it with scissors,” co-founder Breanna Box told i-D. “It was hard to make that shape.”

Throughout the process, the artists tried to translate the practicality of their usual glassware creations, which include horned vases and other homeware goods. “Our pieces always have a functionality, and that’s one of the philosophies behind what we do with Heven,” the studio’s co-founder Peter Dupont told i-D. “This bag is functional: You can put your phone in it, your wallet.”

But is that enough to earn glass handbags the label “functional”? Could we take the subway carrying them? Take them to a day of work? Bring them to a night out with friends? The thought of carrying a glass handbag with little room for essentials that could potentially make my hands sweat, prompting me to drop and break it, is enough to make me hesitant to swipe a credit card to get my own.

So, we asked professional glass artist Madeline Rile Smith, who also goes by @madhotglass on Instagram, to answer some pressing questions about this trend.

How Does Blown Glass Work?

According to Rile Smith, this craft begins with molten glass from a furnace that’s kept at an average of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The artist gathers the material with a stainless steel pipe, and later, blows into it to shape it into the desired structure. Some blown glass structures, like the Coperni x Heven bag, are too thick for artists to blow using only their mouths, so they opt for an air hose instead. “It’s not often that we really use it,” says Rile Smith. “But in the case that we’re blowing something very thick, if a person were to try to blow it, they might get very dizzy.”

She adds that, while we may see some innovation in the designs created from blown glass, the craft itself has not changed much in the past centuries. “A lot of it is that we had a way of doing it and there’s not really a need to change it,” she says. “So, of course, people are innovating with glass all the time and making things like odd objects, sculptures, bags.”

Could A Glass Handbag Break?

Rile Smith is emphatic that, while blown glass used to make handbags is thicker than other applications of glass, it’s still a fragile material. But when it comes to glass handbags, the thick material does provide some protection for parading them around. “If you’re concerned about knocking it over or just durability, having something inside the purse rattling around, I think the thickness probably adds function to it,” she says.

Still, there are scenarios where these handbags could break, especially if you drop them on a hard surface. So, Rile Smith recommends using these handbags as more of special occasion pieces than an everyday bags. “It is definitely a statement piece, and it’s not something you just swing over your shoulder,” she says. “It’s maybe more suited for a cocktail party or just carrying it for a shorter period of time.”

Are Blown Glass Pieces Expensive?

The Coperni x Heven glass handbag will be retailing for a whopping $2,700, according to Paper Magazine. While dropping thousands on a glass handbag may seem excessive, Rile Smith says this price isn’t unusual for the blown glass market. “It’s all a very expensive art form,” she says, adding that the costs of electricity, materials, and technical craft contribute to this price.

Other artists are also making glass handbags for cheaper prices — or at least, items that could be used as glass handbags. Homeware brand Sage & Sill sells a bag-like vase with straps for $125, while craftspeople on Etsy are offering similar styles in acrylic (which looks somewhat like glass) for less than $100.

What Should I Consider Before Buying A Glass Handbag?

Rile Smith recommends asking yourself, “When would I use the bag?” If there are events or special occasions in the horizon that merit such pieces, she says it’s worth buying, thinking about them less as purses and more as “portable art pieces.” The artist also says that it’s good to make a comparison with expensive shoes or jewelry: “Definitely wear them at places where you know your surroundings and you can take care of this item.”

Ultimately, Rile Smith says, the allure of glass handbags lies in the fact that they’re so impractical. “The fact that it requires so much more care in just holding it and the way you interact with it — I feel like that’s why people are drawn to it,” she says.

Still, if the impractical nature of glass handbags (plus, the hefty price tag!), there are still ways to channel the trend with the options below — even if it’s just for the ‘gram.

The Ultimate Guide To Spring Trends

Bold Orange Is Spring’s Must-Try Color Trend

Cargo Denim Is 2022’s Anti-Skinny Jeans Trend

It’s been over a year since TikTok declared skinny jeans to be over, and denim trends continue to deliver on that promise. For proof, see the season’s street style featuring every It girl out there wearing denim cargos like it’s 2003.

Take, for example, Hailey Bieber, who was spotted back in February wearing a pair of cargo jeans with a leather corset. Or: Bridgerton’s Simone Ashley sporting a pair from Mango with a white tank top and leather jacket in May.

Cargo pants have been on the rise for a few seasons now, with everyone from Rihanna and Dua Lipa to Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner wearing the no-purse-needed trouser style from the ‘90s and early 2000s. While some have taken a more utilitarian approach to the look — Bella Hadid wore army green low-rise cargo pants with chunky boots — others are making a case for wearing the style on more formal occasions— like Zendaya who matched a white pair of cargo pants with a metallic chain top on the red carpet. The throwback trend is resonating so much with consumers that Klarna reported a 103% increase in purchases for cargo pants over the past year.

A similar phenomenon has happened with its denim counterpart. On the runways, designers showed club-ready versions of cargo jeans, as well as styles more suited for errands. Y2K-ready brand Blumarine showed a set of denim cargo pants, paired with a butterfly-motif chain belt for spring 2022. Meanwhile, Diesel — another popular brand from the aughts — included a dark wash pair with frontal pockets, paired with a popcorn top, another relic of the era.

info@imaxtree.com

The good news about the comeback is that the modern-day versions of the look are pretty versatile when it comes to styling. As corsets and other Regency-inspired accessories, like opera gloves, continue their reign, they provide an ideal pairing for cargo jeans for a night out. Meanwhile, butterfly tops and platform sandals are better suited for a casual day of brunch and shopping in the summer heat.

If you still need some convincing, take a look at some of the options ahead.

Boxers Are The New Whale Tails — Here’s Why

Low-Rise Jeans Are Officially Back

For Black Women, Roller Skating Is The Ultimate Form Of Self-Expression

In celebration of Juneteenth, Clorox hosted a Glow & Roll roller rink at Refinery29 Unbothered’s The Glow Up event in Atlanta, resulting in a truly spectacular night rooted in Black joy. On that note, we took a look at the history of roller rinks in the U.S., the significant role roller skating plays in the Black community, and how it’s become the ultimate form of self-expression.

Growing up in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights, the shadow of Empire Roller Skating Center loomed large over Shamecha Lywood’s childhood. “Empire was just the place to be,” she recalls. “I was too young for Teen Night, but I used to sneak in sometimes, depending on who was at the door. It was always a great time.”

It was also at Empire that Lywood sustained her most serious skating injury to date, falling down and breaking her ankle after a mishap in the fast lane. “Unfortunately, my last memory [there] is being pushed out on the stretcher,” she says. “By the time my ankle healed, Empire was gone forever.”

As a singular story, the timing of Empire Roller Skating Center’s closure in 2007 can be seen as an unfortunate twist of fate; one that deterred but didn’t derail Lywood’s skating journey. However, Empire’s demise is hardly an isolated incident. Over the last few decades, the shuttering of rinks across the country has made it increasingly difficult for roller skaters to gather and do what they love — especially roller skaters in predominantly Black neighborhoods.

A number of these struggling rinks are depicted in United Skates, a 2018 documentary that highlights the richness of Black roller skating history and culture. Like so many other elements of Black life during the 20th century, roller skating was once a rigidly segregated activity in America. “There was a roller skating craze in the 1890s,” says Dr. Victoria W. Wolcott, professor of history at the University at Buffalo, whose research on the push to integrate commercial recreational spaces culminated in a book titled Race, Riots, and Roller Coasters: The Struggle Over Segregated Recreation in America. “There was protest against segregated roller rinks from the beginning, but they increased in tempo and in the use of nonviolent direct action by the 1940s,” She notes that the tactics perfected at these “skate-ins” were later used during the Civil Rights Movement.

But as the 20th century progressed and integration became the law of the land, rink owners found new ways to keep crowds racially divided (either because of personal bias or to not upset white patrons), deploying terms like “Soul Night” as codenames for what became de facto Black-only nights. As counterintuitive as it was, these nights allowed Black skaters to create their own approach to their artistry, says Jocelyn Marie Goode, an artist, UX researcher, and skater who founded the African-American Roller Skate Museum in 2021. “We were skating alone, without the white gaze, which led to a divergence of style,” she says. “Then, when white people saw what we were doing, it became mainstream. That’s what you saw in the ’70s, and later in the ’90s.”

While Black skate styles vary by region, they share a certain balletic fluidity that rides the beat of any track worth grooving to. Often a multigenerational affair, the warmth and joy that goes along with roller skating feels akin to a family reunion for Goode. Though she recalls being fairly apprehensive on wheels as a child, she fell for skating wholeheartedly after attending a party at the tail end of 2020, a year marked by so much grief within the Black community. “To see Black joy, and people that looked like me just skating around and dancing…I was like, ‘Oh, this is it,’” she recalls. “The feeling of skating and even learning to skate was the feeling of falling in love. It turned out to be extremely therapeutic and healing.”

The word “therapeutic” comes up when Lywood talks about skating, too. “It’s the best way to spend time with myself. You realize how much power you have, to see yourself progress from not being able to do [a move] and now it comes to you like it’s nothing,” she explains. “It’s a really empowering experience.”

Despite both women’s deep personal relationship to skating, they also light up when talking about connecting with their fellow skaters. “I really love what the community of skate has done for me. I’ve learned so much from my peers. Partner skating is really becoming one of my favorite things to do,” Lywood effuses. “We all have that love and that passion, so everybody’s energy is coming together, and it’s out of this world.”

While every skate outing is an opportunity to create poetry in motion, the opportunities for self-expression go far beyond fancy footwork. “Skating offers people a chance to express their alter egos,” says Goode, classifying her own as a “rebellious vixen.” Whether showing up to skate in a head-to-toe costume, sequined shorts, or a mask, there’s always a great deal of thought that goes into how she shows up: “Having a look is intentional.”

For Lywood, who also loves street skating and is known by her neighbors for doing just about everything on wheels, including grocery shopping, her day-to-day style has become synonymous with her skate wardrobe. “I feel like sometimes I wear my best outfits to skate, to be honest, because I feel my best when I’m skating,” she says. “I definitely have a loud look. And my skates reflect that.”

In order to keep her go-to pair of skates feeling fresh, Lywood says she plays around with different colored laces and charms that capture a variety of themes, ranging from fruit to galactic beams, every couple of weeks. “I don’t dress particularly for skating,” she says. “My skates are just a reflection of who I am.”

Lywood’s social media presence (@skate.ting) is a showcase for her physical artistry, as well as the string of colorful looks she dons while perfecting her craft. (Likewise, Goode’s infectious energy and wheelwork has a home online @supergoode_.)

As for what comes next, Lywoood says she’s “locked in for the rest of my life. At this point, my skates — whatever path they put me on, I’ll go there.” Skating has always been about the journey rather than the destination, as well as the freedom of expression and joy it creates — or as Lywood puts it on her Instagram bio, whenever you’re on wheels, it “always feels like ‘Teen Night’ at Empire.’”

Party Girl Fashion Aesthetic Is Trending — What You Need To Join In On The Fun

The influx of purposely blurry pictures on Instagram, showing glitter-filled dance floors, espresso martinis, and disco ball-like mini dresses is an indicator that there’s a new trend underway — and it’s less about being “that girl” and instead becoming the girl. Enter: the party girl aesthetic

Think: Dua Lipa in form-fitting Mugler. Or Hailey Bieber in a mini skirt from Fanci Club. The aesthetic manifests in tiny skirts and bras in lieu of tops, as well as accessories like ankle-busting platform shoes, chunky jewelry, and crystal accessories. And, according to Klarna, shoppers have already gotten the memo. In the last month, the global payment platform’s annual index reported that there’s been a 180% increase in purchases of “sparkly purses,” while “sequined purses” have more than tripled. Other categories in the night luxe theme like “chainmail tops” have jumped 233% in the last year alone.

There are more than a few brands leading the pack with their party-core DNA. Cult-favorite label Poster Girl, founded by Francesca Capper and Natasha Somerville, makes second-skin dresses and catsuits with sexy cut-outs. Danielle Guizo’s sequined micro mini skirt (paired with an “I Heart NYC” shirt) takes the concept of disco ball dressing into more modern, downtown-cool territory. In terms of footwear, Amina Muaddi has had the opulent shoe game on lock for seasons now, with the glass slipper becoming a staple in going-out wardrobes everywhere, as well as Mach & Mach, the Tbilisi brand known for its whimsical glitter pumps with bow and pearl embellishments.

Even ladylike runway names like Jonathan Simkhai, Moschino, and Markarian are also incorporating the party spirit into their Resort 2023 collections, adding disc-shaped paillettes and mirrored spangles into the mix. Meanwhile, Khaite NY showed an assortment of blacked-out sunglasses paired with slinky slip dresses, shearling outerwear, and studded leather, offering up an edgy, rave-ready alternative if sparkles aren’t necessarily your thing.

“We saw a lot of minimalism throughout the pandemic with the ‘clean girl’ aesthetic, but I think that era has come to a close,” says indie brand Trophy Wife founder, Stella.

So what key pieces does one need to embrace the new party girl aesthetic? Like with any other trend, it all boils down to your own personal style. For those just looking to dip their foot into the trend pool, chandelier earrings or a wildly impractical bag embellished with crystals or paillettes is a great place to start. A standout addition to any outfit, sparkly accessories work just as well with jeans and a tank top as it does a micro mini skirt. However, if you’re ready to party until sunrise, a chainmail dress or a butterfly top a la the Y2K resurgence is the way to go.

If you don’t know where to begin, ahead is a Party Girl Shopping Starter Pack to ensure you’re on the right path. One that leads right to the dance floor.

Disco Dressing

When it comes to party dressing, clothing with some pizazz is essential. Luckily, there is a wide range of shimmering tops and bottoms on the market, meaning securing a piece that aligns with your personal style is sure to be a breeze. Alternatively, consider going for a cut-out mini dress.

Slinky Slip Dress

Lingerie-inspired trends are having a major moment right now, with the ever-seductive slip dress at the top of the list. Whether it’s a micro mini or a version that’s longer in length, the slinky silhouette, designed to cling to the body, is one foolproof way to evoke the festive spirit. Just add standout accessories and a pair of tights as a finishing touch.

Party Shoes

Those looking for a quick and easy way to embrace the party girl aesthetic should invest in a pair of bedazzled pumps. Opt for the heavily-embellished styles complete with sky-high heels, metallic leather, and other opulent details fit for a fun night out on the town.

Statement Bag

Fanciful and whimsy, these bags have the power to instantly punch up any ensemble. Often made from luxe materials like faux shearling or chain-link paillettes, what they lack in storage, they make up for in looks.

Sparkly Jewelry

There are a few different ways that one can go about adding a little (or a lot) of sparkle and shine to their lineup. Go for an all-crystal chocker for maximum impact or add a few chunky candy-colored rings for a more everyday take on the trend.

We Found Cute Summer Shoes For Your Size 11 (& Up) Feet

Raise your hand if you’ve ever fallen victim to the size-10 cap. (You can’t see this, but my hand is raised.) As someone who wears a size 11, shopping for women's shoes hasn't been a breeze. Growing up, many popular retailers either offered sizing that maxed out around 10 or stock that was incredibly limited in sizes 11 and up — as if “big feet” were a rare thing, SMH. Fast-forward a few years to when online shopping was booming, and I suddenly gained access to a much more expansive pool of extended sizes and widths. Although larger-feet options are more common nowadays, it can still be difficult to find the perfect (read: stylish) pair.

Since the cute-shoe-finding struggle is real for those of us who fall into the extended size range, I’ve tried to make it a little easier by rustling up all the best-looking and fitting styles for our feet. Ahead, shop everything from the perfect white sneakers to some trendy chunky sandals and a classic pair of loafers.
