We Happen To Love Kristen Wiig’s Red Carpet Lasagna Dress

Our favorite funny woman Kristen Wiig is usually noticed for her monotone quips and impressions of Target check-out cashiers. But, at the 2020 Oscars red carpet, the thing we couldn’t stop talking about was her dress. The 46-year-old comedian and Academy Award nominee wore a show-stopping vibrant red Valentino dress, replete with long black gloves, and Christian Louboutin shoes.

Meanwhile, on the Internet, the dress’ distinct geometric shape and vertical ruffles reminded people of something entirely different: lasagna. According to a number of Twitter users, Wiig’s dress strikingly resembled the trappings of a well-baked Italian dish walking down the Oscars red carpet.

Although Wiig’s outfit was a bold choice for the Oscars. She took a risk, and frankly, it paid off. Her look generated a ton of buzz — even before taking the stage with fellow Saturday Night Live alum Maya Rudolph (also in red, perhaps not coincidentally) to introduce two awards and partake in the best opening bit of the night so far.

Wiig was not nominated for any Oscars this year, though she did receive a nominee back in 2012 for co-writing Bridesmaids alongside Annie Mumolo. She attended the Oscars this year partly to promote her upcoming role in Wonder Woman 1984 where she will play the role of Cheetah. And Wiig certainly caught our attention tonight.

The Secret Meaning Behind Natalie Portman’s Red Carpet Cape

HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA – FEBRUARY 09: Natalie Portman attends the 92nd Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood and Highland on February 09, 2020 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Amy Sussman/Getty Images)

Natalie Portman has been a long-time spokesperson for Dior, often showing up on red carpets wearing beautiful duds by the esteemed luxury house. For the 92nd Oscars, Portman decided to take her close relationship with the brand to the next level and use her outfit as an opportunity to speak up about the lack of female directors nominated — something the Academy has been highly criticized for this year.

Wearing an outfit that featured a black bodysuit with a sheer, gold-leaf embroidered layer on top, and a gold rope tied at the waist, Portman looked very regal. The highlight of the outfit? A cape that was embroidered with the names of this year’s snubbed female directors in gold script along one side of it. “I wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year in my [own] subtle way,” she told a reporter on the red carpet. Her hair was worn in a wavy chin-length bob with beautiful honey highlights, and she wore gold hoops for the occasion.

According to Variety, the names on the cape included Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy), Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), and Mati Diop (Atlantics). The outlet also pointed out that this isn’t the first time the actress has spoken up at an awards show for the lack of female recognition. In 2018, when she was presenting the award for Best Director, she made a subtle yet unmissable jab saying, “And now, here are the all male nominees” before announcing the names. Natalie, you are forever our queen.

The Cast Of Little Women Stunned On The Oscars Red Carpet

Little Women may have been seriously snubbed this awards season (Dear Academy, why?) , but that isn’t keeping the cast from showing up as sleek and beautiful as ever to this year’s Oscars. TBQH, they’ve been showing up in style ever since the movie dropped on Christmas Day and we can’t get enough of it. Dare we say it: The Little Women crew is one of the most stylish casts this year, each with their own unique flair and personality shining through all of their amazing ‘fits. Click through to see them in all their glory on the Oscars red carpet.

Saoirse Ronan

For tonight’s special occasion, Best Actress nominee Saorise Ronan wore a Gucci black deep v-neck top with a cream and black peplum over a lavender skirt with a train. The black fabric on the dress was reportedly taken from her BAFTA gown, a nod to sustainability. Her makeup was soft and natural-looking, and she wore chandelier earrings with white and light pink diamonds, as well as Gucci hair clips (she also debuted new bangs!). “I really wanted to be in a film that had a bunch of girls in it,” the actress told E! News. Same.Photo: Amy Sussman/Getty Images.

Florence Pugh

Florence Pugh, Best Supporting Actress nominee, who’s been seriously impressing us with her outfits lately, opted for a custom Louis Vuitton teal, tiered gown with a belted waist, thin straps, and a high-low hem. The color of her strappy shoes perfectly matched the dress, and her hair was pulled into a soft braided updo. She kept her makeup light and dainty with soft pink lips and eyeshadow, adding a diamond choker with a pink tear drop shaped stone.Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage.

Timothée Chalamet

Timothée Chalamet, style star extraordinaire, slicked his black hair back and rocked a navy and black bomber-style suit jacket, with a pink and diamond pin on the pocket, and a crisp white shirt underneath. His trousers felt sporty with jogger-like bottoms, which were paired with black boots. He looked like an exact replica of Jess from Gilmore Girls, making us ponder whether we’d accept a remake of the iconic show starring Timothée after its 2016 revival seriously flopped.

Laura Dern

Laura Dern already looked like a winner in a pink and black Armani Prive gown. Nominated for the Supporting Actress category for her historic role in A Marriage Story, the top of the gown was reminiscent of flapper dresses from the 1920s with a mix of black stones, beads, and fringe. The dress had a structured pink bodice with an a-line hem while she kept her hair simple (it was down with pieces pulled back softly) and added dangling diamond earrings and a diamond bracelet to finish off the look.Photo: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images.

Janelle Monáe Steals The Red Carpet Show Wearing A Sparkly Hood Dress With A Twist

HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA – FEBRUARY 09: Janelle Monáe attends the 92nd Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood and Highland on February 09, 2020 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Amy Sussman/Getty Images)

Little red riding who? Janelle Monae, the ultimate multi-hyphenate and a 2020 Academy Awards performer, appeared on the Oscars’ red carpet in a head-to-toe sequin Ralph Lauren look. Wearing a body-hugging long-sleeve top with a hood and an open back, along with a matching voluminous skirt, Janelle topped off the look with three sparkly rings and a twinkling tiered choker. We are extremely here for hoods on the Oscars red carpet — especially if they’re completely bedazzled.

The Grammy Award–nominated singer will be giving one of many musical performances tonight — other artists set to perform include Billie Eilish, Elton John, Chrissy Metz, and Idina Menzel among others — though exact details are still under wraps.

We also love how Janelle always uses her platform to speak up for what she believes in, including LGBTQ rights. Back in June 2019, she told Essence, “I should…always be proud to be all of me. My sexuality is just a part of me. I’m also a Black woman. I’m also an artist. I’m also a daughter. I’m also a future mother, hopefully, and so I am a complete person and I’m not ashamed of any part of who I am.”

Just recently, the artist donned a black and white polka dotted dress and a bowling hat to the 13th Annual Essence Black Women In Hollywood Awards. She’s also been known to rock all kinds of tuxedos and suiting, including a pinstripe three-piece suit, a blue striped suit and matching shirt, and a sailor-inspired black and white double breasted one with matching trousers. Whatever she does, Janelle is a major role model and definitely a person to watch — tonight and always.

The Ultimate Fashion Guide To The Oscars Red Carpet

If the Grammys were a water break in the 26.2-mile marathon that is award season, the Oscars are the final sprint. Only the best of the best are still going strong, wishing and hoping that all their hard work thus far will result in one of the trophies waiting at the finish line. And if you’re planning on winning an Oscar, there’s really no choice but to show up like a real movie star.

Tonight’s event is expected to be a fashionable one, with rumors already starting to spread about what some of our favorite nominated attendees are going to walk the red carpet wearing. Will Timothée Chalamet, who will be presenting, show up in a corset like Twitter predicted? A girl can only dream. What about the rest of his Little Women cast? Sequins for Florence? Chain-link for Saoirse? And what couture frock will Cynthia Erivo choose for the final award show of her Harriet tour?

Find out the answers to all your burning questions of the night by clicking through our best-dressed picks from tonight’s Oscars red carpet.

Here They Are: The Best Oscars Looks Of All Time

Finish line's in sight! We've glammed up for the Golden Globes, mellowed out for the SAGs, and pulled out almost all the stops for the Grammys. But the mother of all award shows will always be the Oscars — happening tonight.

Oscars bingo is all set up, the liquor cabinet's stocked, and we're ready to fight someone if Parasite doesn’t win big. The brainstorming has begun for who’s going to be wearing what (Charlize Theron in Dior? Margot Robbie in Chanel? Florence Pugh in sequins and sunnies?). All we can do is wait and see. But to pass the time between now and Sunday night, we're taking a walk down memory lane and reminiscing on the best red carpets of Oscars past. It’s one of our favorite things to do leading up to the show (besides planning a themed menu and plotting a drinking game). While style trends have changed through the years, the extravagance, the luxury that comes with the Academy Awards is steadfast.

In anticipation of our favorite red carpet of the year, hop in the DeLorean for a peek through the history of Hollywood's ultimate prom to see which looks have held up. Ahead, find out who made our all-time best-dressed list from Audrey Hepburn to Queen Latifah and everyone in between.

Audrey Hepburn, 1954

It never took much to make the late Audrey Hepburn look glamorous, but in this Givenchy gown, Hepburn, glowing from winning an Oscar for Roman Holiday, is nothing short of perfection.

Grace Kelly, 1955

Designed by arguably the most famous costumier in history, Edith Head, Grace Kelly's Oscars look was, like most Grace Kelly looks, an absolute winner.

Madonna, 1991

Arm-in-arm with Michael Jackson and dripping in Old Hollywood glamour, there's nothing we'd rather see Madonna wearing to the 63rd Annual Academy Awards than this Bob Mackie ensemble.

Winona Ryder, 1994

Winona Ryder, 1996

While we're used to seeing 90s-era Winona Ryder donning all-black ensembles, this champagne-colored vintage gown is an unexpected, and dazzling, switch-up.

Courtney Love, 1997

The queen of grunge got all dolled up by Versace for the 1997 Academy Awards — and we support it 100%.

Sharon Stone, 1998

We would normally advise against wearing the Gap at the Oscars— but when it's combined with Vera Wang and draped on Sharon Stone, it's hard not to be convinced that it's right where it belongs.

Celine Dion, 1999

A suit on the red carpet is hardly a nuanced idea in 2019, but in 1999, worn backwards of all things — let's just say our fashion minds were blown upon seeing Celine Dion in this John Galliano set.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 1999

Pretty In Pink might have starred Molly Ringwald, but Gwyneth Paltrow (that year's Best Actress winner for Shakespeare in Love) looked the part in this bubblegum pink number by Ralph Lauren.

Queen Latifah, 2000

Blue is definitely Queen Latifah's color.

Renée Zellweger, 2001

A long way from donning PJs all day and micro-minis at work in her role as Bridget Jones, Renée Zellweger classed up for the red carpet in a vintage yellow frock by Jean Dresses.

Halle Berry, 2002

A sheer gown and an Oscar? Becoming the first Black woman to win Best Actress, Halle Berry took down all the competition — both on the red carpet and the stage — in this Elie Saab frock.

Charlize Theron, 2004

Has there ever been a time when Charlize Theron isn't glowing?

Beyonce Knowles, 2005

There to perform not one, not two, but three songs, Beyonce went with a black velvet number that hugged her curves in all the right places. Thanks Atelier Versace!

Michelle William, 2006

Accompanying her then-boyfriend, the late Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams was a shining ray of light in this yellow number by Vera Wang.

Nicole Kidman, 2007

Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga would hardly be our first choice, but after seeing the Oscar-winning Australian actress in this red hot gown, we promise to never doubt the combination again.

Anne Hathaway, 2009

Is it just us, or does Anne Hathaway look like an actual Oscar in this fitted Armani Privé dress?

Zoe Saldana, 2010

Let's get one thing straight: no one (and we mean no one) could pull off this dress other than Zoe Saldana.

Cate Blanchett, 2011

In this lavender haute couture gown by Givenchy, Cate Blanchett wasn't just an award-winning actress — she's a damn fashion icon.

Michelle Williams, 2012

Red on the red carpet is hardly a task for the faint of heart, but Michelle Williams, nominated for her role as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn, made it look like the easiest thing in the world thanks to one hell of a pixie cut and 300 hours of work in the Louis Vuitton Paris atelier.

Angelina Jolie, 2012

No one does a high slit quite like Mrs. Smith herself, Angelina Jolie, who generated one of the greatest Oscar memes ever with this pose.

Jennifer Lawrence, 2013

En route to accept her Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer Lawrence had all eyes on her in this pastel-colored Dior gown. It was pretty chill, even for her.

Lupita Nyong'o, 2014

Zendaya, 2015

For an Oscars newbie, Zendaya looked anything but out of place in this Vivienne Westwood stunner of a gown.

Sienna Miller, 2015

For his red carpet debut designing for Oscar de la Renta, Peter Copping made quite the impression with this bow-embellished, square neck gown on Sienna Miller.
