3 Ways To Wear Red — 2023’s Top Color Trend— This Summer

Theory, Fall 2023, New York, Feb 9, 2023

Last Fashion Month, it was hard to attend a fashion show or presentation that didn’t include the color red. Day after day, it became clear that the shade was becoming the top color trend for 2023.

Still, it was hard to imagine a world in which people would be open to styling red in their everyday lives. A notoriously hard-to-pull-off color that is often linked to intense feelings of passion and anger, as well as crime scenes and cheesy Valentine’s Day merchandise, red has long been embraced by pop culture as a color that’s worn to symbolize a deeper meaning. It was a color that Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones, known for her disdain toward monogamous relationships and fiery approach to sexuality, often wore throughout the series. It’s also the signature shade of Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s filmography, often associated with death, passion, and pain in movies like Volver and Julieta

Yet, for the fall/winter 2023 collections, designers casually embedded red into their lineups, displaying it with the ease usually granted to blue jeans or white tank tops. Proenza Schouler featured a red A-line leather strapless maxi dress in their collection, shown alongside pieces like blazers and tailored shirts in a mostly somber palette. Theory went for a similar approach, showing head-to-toe monochrome red looks that were literally created as a working woman’s uniform. Other designers like Sandy Liang, Jason Wu, and Alejandra Alonso Rojas also delicately introduced the color in their lineups, without any passion-related gimmicks or ominous symbolism. Even if the Puppets & Puppets’ Carly Mark took inspiration from the 1988 thriller Dead Ringers, the use of red in flower pasties, phone-handle handbags, and sequined dresses, was more whimsical than tragic.

It’s clear designers are making it easier for people to introduce red to their wardrobes, from handbags and dresses, to shoes and monochrome suits. If the runways still don’t convince you, here’s how the Refinery29 team styles red — their way.

How to style red: go monochrome

“While a week ago, this neutrals-loving minimalist went on the record to say that she would never wear a red pantsuit or dress, I ate my words when, a few days later, I tried this vest-and-pants set after seeing it on a Banana Republic mannequin in-store. Thanks to the oversized fit, the suit is effortless enough to wear all summer and mix and match with other separates, while the punchy red color keeps it from looking boring.” — Irina Grechko, fashion director

How to style red: let the accessories do the work

“Ask anyone who knows me — bold colors are not my thing. But there’s something about red that has long enthused me, and last year, I decided to add a big scarlet pop to my wardrobe with this Prada Cleo bag. To my surprise, months later, it ended up being one of the defining colors of fashion trends for 2023, pushing me to add this pair of heart-shaped heels to my closet. I’ve worn the red bag with everything from a classic white shirt and jeans to a bikercore-inspired outfit for nights out, a testament to the versatility of red. But this black-and-red outfit combo is my favorite for date nights. While I’m still waiting for the color to catch on to other categories in my wardrobe, I think starting with accessories — be it handbags, socks, shoes, or jewelry — is a great way to start off with such a bold color.” — Frances Solá-Santiago, fashion writer

How to style red: just add socks

“My favorite place to wear red is on my lips, so when adding red to my outfits, I like it to have a similar small but bold pop. I love how a loud sock can really brighten a look, and this pair from Happy Socks does exactly that. To pull it together, I added a black oversized open button down with small pops of red to keep the look consistent from head to toe.” — Hannah Rimm, senior editor, Money Diaries

Why Headphones Are A Summer Fashion Essential

Last year, I got over-the-ear wireless headphones for the first time ever, wanting to prove that the headphones we wear are a vital styling choice. Although I had always been enthused by the way they made people look cool without trying so hard, it had never occurred to me to wear headphones that mimicked the look of a bygone era. My generation did grow up in the time of wired headphones, but it was at the point when the sleek white string of Apple earphones hung over your outfit. As such, I just could never understand why other commuters chose over-the-ear headphones, or even wireless Airpods.

Turns out, I was right: your headphones can make or break an outfit..

Take, for example, Succession’s Kendall Roy, who wears over the ear headphones because he’s trying to tell us he’s hipper than his L-to-the-OG dad, Logan. Listening to Jay-Z while being driven to his dad’s company and dressed in thousand-dollar suits, Roy is trying to be the kind of “progressive” billionaire that attempts to be so cool it’s borderline hilarious. Meanwhile, today’s It girls like Bella Hadid sport wired headphones to channel a nostalgic look, preferring the ones made cool during the Y2K era. Then there’s the stereotypical finance executive look that has made in-ear wireless headphones synonymous with this sector, essentially showing their knack for any tech that’s ahead of the curve.

Headphones are functional. They allow us to be on-the-go, while still jamming to our favorite music. Putting on headphones has always been about being at the forefront of technology. Back in the 1880s, switchboard operators started using 10-pound headphones, with a large one-ear piece and a microphone attached. Throughout the early 20th century, they rapidly developed into more portable devices mainly used by the military. The first wireless headphones came in the 1960s, an era of futurist thinking, allowing people to bring their radio with them. Still, they looked different from the ones we know today, featuring radio antennas and bulky speakers in the ear cups. That same decade saw the release of the Beatlephones, a collaboration between the John Koss audio company and The Beatles that started marketing headphones to teenagers, changing their usage and demographic in the process. Then, came the 1980s, when Sony’s Walkman cassette player upended music and radio listening, transforming it from passive to an on-the-go activity. By the beginning of the 21st century, the rise of iPods brought forth the wired EarPods, making their easily-tangled white strings the protagonists of this era. Similarly, Bluetooth technology revolutionized the way people listen to music and communicate, allowing tech companies to play more with the look and feel of headphones, including the popular Beats by Dr Dre headphones that updated the vintage over-the-ear headphones with a wide range of colors.

I first put on headphones when they were still in their wired era, during the early 2000s. Throughout my wired headphones adoption, I thought the over-the-ear versions would make me cooler, like a relic from an earlier time that was above any innovative technology. But still, I stayed with the wired in-ear headphones from Apple out of habit. Then, on a random day in 2022 — nearly 20 years since I first put on wired headphones — I figured it was time to buy a wireless over-the-ear pair, just for the plot.

Instantly, the pair — a sleek black wireless over-the-ear version with padded ear cups from Zihnic — made any outfit I wore look more commuter-ready than any other accessories I tried before. And to my surprise, it went well with everything from a leather jacket and jeans to a knit top and linen pants. Out of nowhere, putting on the over-the-ear headphones made me look like a woman on the go — with (literally) no strings attached.

As a commuter, it’s my hobby now to see if outfits I see on the subway could be made better with other models of earphones. I’ve seen women carry two-to-three tote bags that keep getting tangled with their clothes, for example. A pair of wireless headphones could make them look like someone who has their life together, while over-the-ear headphones could make them look like they’re straight out of a party at the office.

It’s no wonder brands have put so much effort on the look of their headphones over the years. Apple’s AirPods Max wireless headphones have adopted sleeker looks than older pairs of over-the-ear models, making them more fashionable in the process, with a variety of colors available. Similarly, luxury fashion and tech brands like Montblanc, Bang & Olufsen, Bose have prioritized minimal styles in their versions of over-the-ear wireless headphones, including materials like leather and memory foam. On the other hand, brands like Nothing — an emerging tech company making affordable audio products — have opted to make their wireless in-ear headphones transparent, showing the hardware involved in the buds to anyone who looks at them, making for a rawer look. On the wired front, Sony MDR in-ear headphones have added a metallic sheen to their buds with a variety of colors to choose from, while Apple has stayed true to its white wired headphones for nearly 30 years now, betting on their capacity to blend in.

While most commuters put so much effort in telling the world who they are through their clothes, their headphones probably say as much — if not more — about their personality. Yet, unlike most of our fashion choices, it’s not a decision we put as much thought into beyond their tech aspect. So the next time you think about your headphones, it might be a good moment to consider what they, along with your outfit, tell the world about who you are. If not, just at least consider how they make the outfit — they’ll do it on their own, anyway.

3 Outfits With Raffia Shoes & Bags To Wear Off The Beach

Last year, when Jacquemus debuted its spring 2023 collection, focused on raffia, the beachy textile was having a moment. Not only was the runway show titled “Le Raphia” — the French term for the material — but threads of raffia fell from the ceiling and models walked wearing everything raffia, from giant hats and oversized earrings to fringed crop tops and voluminous coats.

The show confirmed what I’ve always known: raffia is not just a beach textile. Since moving to the United States from Puerto Rico, I’ve been baffled by the way people reserve their raffia handbags and other accessories for salty beaches and poolside gatherings. Sure, I come from a place where it’s sunny and warm year-round — both factors that often lead to the usage of raffia — but why deny ourselves the opportunity to wear such a lively and relaxed textile in the winter? Or even just outside of a beach context? After all, raffia — extracted from the palm trees of the same name — is a tough material that can withstand much more than just sand and salty water, while its texture is a sartorial dream.

Many designers are also pushing the raffia agenda this year. Aside from Jacquemus, brands like Khaite and Bottega Veneta have released raffia versions of popular styles, including the latter’s Cassette handbag, which was a staple of the Daniel Lee era and usually comes in woven leather. They followed the popular Prada crochet tote bag, which was first released in 2021 and has since become a go-to for influencers like Chiara Ferragni and Alexandra Pereira. On the footwear front, It brand Larroudé recently released a variety of their popular sky-high platforms in raffia, as well as wedges — one of 2023’s top shoe trends — and mules in both tan and black.

This raffia takeover is notable for all the different ways this classic material is reinvented. Raffia, for example, is most commonly  seen in neutral or tan colors. But brands like Prada, have released their raffia accessories in bright and pastel colors, while Larroudé went the tropical goth way with matte black footwear. Seeing these displays of non-cliché raffia usage, I’ve renewed my hopes that this material — and its many siblings, that also include another palm tree-rooted textile, called rattan — can be taken out of their usual sceneries and hold a space in our wardrobes year-round. Not only because using our pieces regardless of the season may help wind down overconsumption, but because the woven construction and durability of raffia deserves a chance to shine when it’s not 80 degrees and sunny.

But, for now, let’s just start with summer in the city, shall we? With no plans for a beachside vacation, here are three ways I’m wearing raffia this season — no sand included.

Go For White

I’ve never been one to wear star bags in neutral colors. There’s something about the natural raffia shade that makes the handbag look washed out and it’s harder to pull off in non-beach scenarios. So, instead, I go for white, mainly because it’s easy to style and holds a certain elegance when taken out of a waterside context. This summer, I plan on styling it with jeans and a white button-down, a classic outfit formula that can be easily be adjusted with accessories.

Make it cocktail-appropriate

Ever since I got this raffia clutch (pictured above), I haven’t stopped wearing it to go out. No matter the time of the year, I’ve managed to pull it off by simply pairing it with any black night time outfit, from a romper to a matching set (pictured above). This summer, I’m adding my raffia platforms to the mix, not caring about matching my raffia. Anything goes after dark.

Just add a slip dress

Summertime silk dresses are one of my favorite pieces for the season. Adding a contrasting raffia handbag that clashes with the silk’s smooth finish is a great way to make the season’s outfits more interesting. If the contrast is too much, try to keep the colors as monochrome as possible (like the example pictured above), making it easier for the raffia to blend in.
