Hailey Bieber’s Latest Look Will Convince You To Wear Sweatpants Outside

Last week, Hailey Bieber was spotted in Los Angeles wearing a cream-colored, menswear-inspired coat and slouchy, white sweatpants. And while our sweatpants are typically reserved for working from home or weekend days spent channel surfing on the sofa, Bieber’s Balenciaga look has us convinced that the indoor wardrobe staple can be elevated to outdoor status with the right jewelry and a statement coat

Checking off the first on the list, Bieber wore three different pairs of earrings: chunky huggies from Jennifer Fisher, as well as pavé hoops and a diamond letter hoop earring with the letter “B” on it by Jacquie Aiche. While her jewelry is on the pricier side, brands like BaubleBar and Shashi both sell similar styles that will more than do the trick for a fraction of the price.

Her coat, a product of Balenciaga’s spring ‘21 collection that features long, rolled up sleeves and boxy shoulders, is similarly easy to mimic on a budget. (Fellow supermodel Gigi Hadid recently wore an oversized, plaid coat from Mango that is still available and costs $150.) Pair with your trusty sweats — we love pairs from Hanes or Pangaia —  a pair of sneakers — Bieber’s are Nike Air Force 1s — and some dark sunglasses — in Bieber’s case, Ray-Ban Wayfarers — and you’ll be at risk of getting tailed by Bieber’s paparazzi in no time.

Other celebrities have also taken to styling up their sweatpants for outdoor occasions. In September, Katie Holmes chose an unlikely pairing of knit Mango joggers with a plaid Frame blazer to stroll through New York City. The very next day, Tracee Ellis Ross dressed up her blue Pangaia sweatsuit with a pair of braided heels from Bottega Veneta. Model Paloma Elsesser chose to add gold hoops and Gucci clogs to her crewneck-and-sweatpants duo in April, while J.Lo donned her sweats with a Dior bucket hat, a corduroy puffer, and hoops in December.

All that’s to say, after almost a year spent in and out of lockdown as a result of the pandemic, we wouldn’t hesitate to wear our sweats anywhere — that is, only when coupled with the right accessories and a really good coat a la Bieber.

Hailey Bieber's “Ugly” Shoe Combo Is So Relatable

Beyoncé Tapped Hailey Bieber For New Ivy Park Drop

ASOS Bought Topshop. What This Means For The Fashion Brand.

On Monday, fashion retailer ASOS confirmed rumors that it would, in fact, be purchasing Arcadia Group’s brand lineup, including millennial fashion favorite Topshop, as well as Topman, Miss Selfridge, and HIIT. “Topshop & Topman are now part of the ASOS family,” the U.K.-based fast-fashion brand wrote in a tweet early on Monday morning. “We can’t wait to bring these iconic British brands into a new era.”

According to a release obtained by Refinery29, the acquisition cost ASOS £265 million (around $404 million in USD), with an additional £30 million ($41 million USD) paid for Arcadia Group’s stocks. Not included in the deal are the physical Topshop stores — previously beloved for their interactive events, like the 2014 live-streamed fashion show (back when the brand had a slot on the London Fashion Week calendar and collaborated with the likes of Kate Moss) — many of which have closed over the last four years.

“The acquisition of these iconic British brands is a hugely exciting moment for ASOS and our customers and will help accelerate our multi-brand platform strategy,” ASOS chief executive Nick Beighton said in the release. It is but one stepping stone in the brand’s plan to become “the number one destination for fashion-loving 20-somethings throughout the world,” Beighton said to BBC.

Despite holding a special place in many millennials’ hearts for offering fairly affordable on-trend fashion in the ’00s, the high street brand has been struggling to stay relevant with the younger generation of shoppers, who either favor cheaper alternatives like Boohoo and Missguided or shop secondhand for sustainability reasons.

The company has also undergone periods of turmoil. In October 2018, Arcadia Group chairman and the founder of Topshop, Topman, and Miss Selfridge, Sir Philip Green, was accused of sexual harassment, racist abuse, and staff bullying. Soon after, even Topshop’s most loyal fans began receding from the brand, as did the brand’s partners like Beyoncé, who bought back her athleisure line Ivy Park from the company.

In May 2019, Topshop closed all of its U.S. stores. (This followed Arcadia Group closing 200 global locations three years prior.) In April 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, Arcadia Group was criticized for canceling more than £100 million ($137 million USD) worth of clothing orders, leaving thousands of garment workers without income. By December 2020, it was announced that Arcadia Group was officially in administration.

Now, with new owners in ASOS, a brand beloved by Gen Z, there appears to be a glimmer of hope for Topshop.  That said, according to BBC, only 300 employees from Arcadia Group, specifically those in design, buying, and retail partnerships, will be transferred to ASOS, with “about 70 stores with 2,500 employees expected to close.” Many on social media criticized the decision. “Would have been nice to have this communicated to Arcadia staff before the Twitter celebrations started,” Danni Griffin replied to the ASOS announcement on Twitter. “Absolutely heartbroken for my friends and ex-coworkers who have woken up to find out they have no job via Twitter/the news today,” wrote designer Eilidh Baxter.

The deal will be completed on February 4 and, according to the Instagram post announcing the news, “the full collection is coming soon.”

ASOS declined to comment beyond the press release, which can be read here.

From Pearls To Cardigans, Harry Styles Is Responsible For All Of Today’s Top Trends

Harry Styles is, as many have previously stated, a renaissance man. He sings, dances, and models. He acts with a range that spans wartime action flicks (Dunkirk), independent psychological thrillers (Don’t Worry Darling), and comedic animal impersonations (SNL). Over the last few years, he has also established himself as one of fashion’s most influential figures — with his Vogue cover, for which he wore a Gucci dress, and JW Anderson cardigan, that inspired a viral knitting challenge on TikTok, being just some of his sartorial highlights. Between his friendship with Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, his partnership with stylist Harry Lambert, and his wear-anything mentality, the Fine Line singer will surely go down in fashion history as one of this decade’s most prominent dressers.

Particularly over the last year, Styles has influenced a handful of trends. This includes, but is not limited to: pearl necklaces, bucket hats, and sweaters. The yellow bucket hat he wore in the “Golden” music video caused a 96% spike in demand for the headwear on fashion search engine Lyst, while his argyle sweater from the “Treat People With Kindness” video (which featured Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, also in an argyle sweater) led to a 39% increase in search for similar pieces on the site. And that doesn’t even scratch the surface of Styles’ reach in the industry.

Ahead, all the trends Styles had a leading role in shaping.

Pearl Necklaces

During the press tour for his hit album Fine Line in December 2019, Styles began wearing a pearl necklace to every single event he attended, pairing it with cartoon-adorned cardigans and custom Gucci x Fine Line merch worn with high-waisted trousers. And though the press tour has long ended, Styles hasn’t stored away his trusty pearls. Rather, he continues to debut covetable new styles. Statement Collars

At the 2020 Brit Awards, Styles wore an eyelet collar on the red carpet. With the look, he added a purple sweater (that matched his painted fingernails!), a brown suit, and a pair of patent leather Mary-Janes — another top trend at the moment. The look — collar included — went on to be recreated for SNL in December, when Timothée Chalamet impersonated Styles on the show. The singer-actor also wore a statement collar at his friend Jeffrey Azoff’s wedding, which he attended with alleged girlfriend Olivia WildePhoto: Joe Maher/Getty Images.

Embroidery

In February, Styles was photographed leaving BBC Radio 2 in corduroy pants, a striped T-shirt, and a green jacket by Bode that features embroidered pictures of underwater plants and a ship. Like knitting, mending, and patchworking, embroidery has become one of the year’s most popular DIY trends — probably because of how cathartic it is to continuously jab at fabric with a needle during times of stress. Styles’ stamp of approval didn’t hurt, though.Photo: Neil Mockford/GC Images.

Cardigans

We knew Styles had reach in the fashion community. What we didn’t know was just how far his reach went. This summer, we got our answer. In June, months after Styles wore a JW Anderson patchwork cardigan for a TODAY appearance, his fans on TikTok got an idea: To DIY his cardigan, which cost over $1,800, and document the process on the popular social media app. Today, TikTok’s #HarryStylesCardigan page has 54.1 million views — 36.3 million more than when we first reported this news in August. Photo: Nathan Congleton/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank/Getty Images.

Crochet Tops

Within 24 hours of Harry Styles’ music video debut of “Watermelon Sugar,” search spiked for all of the fashion items featured in it, including Hawaiian shirts and pieces from Bode. Also popular? Crochet tops, which rose in search on Lyst by 6%, and have since become a major trend, both on DIY TikTok and on Instagram. Fashion brands ranging from Miu Miu to SERIES NY also hopped on board.

Bucket Hats

Styles’ Éliou pearl necklace wasn’t the only trendy item featured in “Golden.” In addition to billowy shirts and a mint-colored Gucci blazer (which caused a 52% spike in search on Lyst for turquoise and blue blazers), the singer also wore a bright yellow bucket hat, which led to a 92% increase in search on the site. Though already a prominent trend among celebrities, Styles’ wearing of the hat style may have advanced the accessory to peak popularity.

Argyle Sweaters

Admittedly, it wasn’t just Styles who caused an uptick in popularity for argyle sweaters — Waller-Bridge and Wilde helped, too. In January, following the release of his music video for “Treat People With Kindness,” in which both Styles and Waller-Bridge wore argyle sweater vests — as well as a paparazzi spotting of Wilde wearing a pink-and-brown argyle sweater vest — Lyst reported a 39% month-over-month increase in search for similar knitwear. In addition, the site saw a 26% increase in search for “argyle” sweaters and a 17% jump in page views for sweater vests.

How To Patchwork Your Jeans, According To A TikTok DIY Expert

If you’re anything like me and buy vintage jeans in bulk, you’ve likely found yourself with a NSFW hole on one too many occasions. (I’m referring to the dreaded under-the-butt rip, though knee rips can sometimes become an issue, too.) They look rugged and cool for the first few wears but eventually, as the rips expand, it becomes clear that, without a repair, your pair of jeans will be no more. But, after watching one too many DIY videos on TikTok, I’m convinced that I — and you, too — can handle the job of patching up the jean holes all by myself.

Thanks to designer labels like Marni, Ssōne, Ciao Lucia, Bode, and more, the patchwork trend is rising through fashion’s ranks, providing yet another reason for us to take matters into our own hands and make art out of our torn and ripped garments using patches.

With that in mind, I asked Refinery29 designer Lily Fulop, a TikTok mending expert and the author of Wear, Repair, Repurpose: A Maker’s Guide to Mending and Upcycling Clothes, to walk us through a simple patch repair from start to finish. She used a pair of vintage 501 Levi’s of mine that had seen better days after four years of non-stop wear. Spoiler: After she was done with them, they came out looking better (and cooler) than the day I got them.

Ahead, follow along as she shares her steps to patchworking a pair of ripped jeans.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Step 1: Buy Supplies

Before you start, you need to purchase some supplies. Your shopping list will include a piece of fabric for each “patch” you plan to add, embroidery floss, an embroidery needle, pins, a thimble, scissors (preferably a pair of sharp sewing scissors), and an iron. Oh, and the garment you’re planning to work with. Fulop used jeans, but a jacket, handbag, or T-shirt would work, too, with these steps.

Step 2: Prepare the patch

Once you’ve gathered all the necessary materials, prepare the patch. “Cut a rectangle of fabric that is bigger than the hole you’re trying to cover,” Fulop advises. “It should extend at least a couple inches beyond the hole in all directions.” From there, she says to fold about ¾ of an inch of each edge of the fabric to the underside, and then iron the edges into place. Once the edges are flat, use your pins to secure the patch to the jeans (or whatever item you chose to use). “Be sure to only go through one layer of your jeans,” she says. “You don’t want to pin the leg together.”

Step 3: Prepare the needle & thread

Cut a piece of embroidery floss so that it’s about as long as your arm. Then, thread your embroidery floss through the eye of the needle. Once it’s secure, tie a knot at the end of the floss.

Step 4: Attach the body of the patch to the jeans

Starting from the inside of your pants and the bottom corner of your patch, bring your needle up through the patch and the front layer of denim. Next, bring the needle back down about a centimeter away from where it entered in order to create your first stitch. Continue by bringing the needle up again, about a centimeter away, and back down in a straight line. “This is called the running stitch,” Fulop explains. If you would like to see this in action, she has a video tutorial of this particular stitch on her TikTok channel Mindful Mending.

Keep going with this step until you reach the top of the patch. According to Fulop, the final stitch in the column should end inside the pants. “You’ll then move your needle over to start the next column,” she says. “A horizontal stitch connecting the [two] columns will be visible on the inside, but not the outside.” From there, repeat the process for the next column. Keep going until the entire patch is covered with stitches. (Fulop stitched 13 columns on this.)

“If you run out of thread, tie another piece onto the remaining tail on the inside of your jeans, so no one will see,” says Fulop. Once you’re finished, bring your needle to the inside of your pants and tie a knot. Trim your extra floss about an inch away from the knot.

Step 5: Secure the edges of the patch

Next, prepare your needle and thread for a new stitch (refer back to step 3!). For this step, you have two options: You can use a new piece of floss (maybe a new color!), or recycle whatever floss was leftover from your last stitch to reduce waste. Starting at the top of the patch, pull your needle up through the inside of the jeans to the outside of the patch, about a centimeter from the edge. Then, pull it back down at the edge, going through just the denim and avoiding the patch. “Come back up in the hole you started in, and then catch your thread in the loop you created so that, when you draw your thread to the left, you don’t make any diagonal stitches,” Fulop says, noting that this is the most complicated stitch of the entire process. “The following stitches are a lot simpler!”

If you need any further demonstration, there are plenty of great YouTube tutorials out there.

Moving from right to left, push your needle down through the patch and up at the edge (again, only through the denim), catching the loop of the thread each time. “Each stitch makes an upside-down L shape,” says Fulop. From there, continue going around all the edges until you end up back where you started. This process is called a blanket stitch. Another stitch that you can use to secure edges is a whip stitch, which Grey’s Anatomy fans (me!) might remember as one of Dr. Yang’s specialties.

Step 6: Check the work

Look over the finished product. The above photos show what the inside and the outside of your jeans should look like once you’re all finished. “Repeat on any other holes you have for a cute, patchy look that’ll make your jeans last longer,” says Fulop.
