The Love — And Strategy — Behind Couple Style

Johanna Vizueta-Hoskins and Amir Hoskin’s marriage began as a whirlwind romance. Back in 2016, the two met at a concert in New York City, when Johanna found herself alone at the event after her friends didn’t make it. Luckily, she found a friend inside the venue, who introduced her to Hoskins. It wasn’t love at first sight. It actually took nine months of silence between the two for Hoskins to reach out to Vizueta-Hoskins again. But two months later, they were engaged, and they married a month after that.

Years into their marriage, the two constantly find themselves dressing alike. “It’s actually really natural,” says Johanna.

Couple style is a phenomenon that’s captivated people for decades, with whole industries popping up in places like South Korea to provide couples with matching looks. Celebrities and public figures, in particular, may establish their partnerships through an almost brand-like identity. We’ll always remember Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s matching denim ensembles and Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thorton’s blood vials. Some celebs commit to couple style even when their partner is not around: This week, Gwen Stefani donned a pair of sneakers bearing husband Blake Shelton’s face, while in 2018, Katy Perry donned a pajama set featuring images of Orlando Bloom

Others take the branding strategy seriously enough to grow not only their relationship but their public profiles.

Take Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, for example. Before the two got married in 2013, Kardashian and West had entirely different aesthetics. Bodycon dresses, pencil skirts, and tall pumps dominated Kardashian’s wardrobe and contributed to her reality-star image, while West’s style — a monochrome palette and streamlined array of T-shirts and jeans — earned him fashion industry credibility and the approval of Vogue’s Anna Wintour. By 2013, when the two celebrated a lavish wedding ceremony in Italy, Kardashian’s look had changed: she was increasingly sporting camel coats, Balmain blazers, and minimalist, nude gowns. The transformation was even documented in a Keeping Up With The Kardashians episode in Season 7, when West and his stylist, Renelou Padora, cleaned out Kardashian’s closet to make room for the new style identity (and loads of Yeezy merch) that would eventually make her a darling of the fashion world.

More recently, it’s Kourtney Kardashian who’s changing her stripes to match her boyfriend, Travis Barker. The eldest Kardashian’s penchant for neutral palettes, graphic T-shirts, and midriff-baring sets has been consistent for as long as the Kardashians have been on E!

But it took dating an emo drummer for Kardashian to swap her neon bikinis for skull-printed swimsuits. Earlier this year, when Kardashian and Barker first announced their relationship, the reality star channeled the ‘00s pop-punk aesthetic. In March 2021, one of their first public outings, she donned a white graphic T-shirt with a black trench coat and a pair of black mesh cut-out trousers, while Barker sported a white T-shirt, black bomber jacket, and black jeans. It’s safe to say that, as Kardashian and Barker get closer, the KUWTK star is entering a new sartorial phase.

The way couples brand themselves today works a lot like uniform dressing, says Forbes-Bell. “If you think about a brand or a company, they have a way they dress to match their mission,” she says. “For people who want to monetize their relationship, it makes sense.”

The business of “Instacouples” has boomed over the past decade since Instagram blew up the digital world. Influencers like Chiara Ferragni, who is known as a unit with her husband Fedez as #TheFerragnez, have been able to make money off their romances in a move that parallels Kim and Kanye’s trajectory. Ferragni’s 2018 wedding was a case study for this phenomenon: it resulted in 67 million digital interactions and a branding value of $36 million, according to WWD

In the age of curated Instagram feeds and #CoupleGoals, the strategic relationship between fashion and romance is a powerful tool for everyday couples, too. On Instagram, the hashtag #CoupleStyle has over 400,000 posts, while TikTok has become a space for couples to participate in viral style challenges — like the runway front row challenge — where synced fashion aesthetics are even more essential.

“One of the main motivations behind dressing a certain way is to fulfill that human desire to belong and to be aligned with a group,” says Shakaila Forbes-Bell, a fashion psychologist and the founder of Fashion Is Psychology. “When couples come together and form a unit, unconsciously they start to dress alike because it’s an easy way to form that social bond.”

For Fiona Luo and Michael Smith, their mutual adoration for Rick Owens is what brought them together in the first place. The two met in 2018, when Luo saw a photo of Smith on the popular Instagram account @meninrickowens. She started following him and he quickly slid into her DMs.

“It was Rick Owens that caused us to meet,” says Luo, a fashion publicist for Gia Kuan. “I think there is a similar approach to building out ourselves through our clothes.”

Over the past three years, the two have grown to dress more similarly. In the past, they’ve broken up and gotten back together, and when they reconnected, the two found they dressed even more alike. “I think I’ve naturally gotten more feminine in the way I dress and I think Fiona has gotten slightly less feminine,” says Smith.

But Luo says that her shifts in style have little to do with Smith. Instead, she says, her fashion evolution comes from growing closer to herself. “Fashion starts with how attractive you want to make yourself through the male gaze,” she says, describing her former mindset. “But I think a big part of that is shedding that and being able to dress through how you actually want to build yourself, rather than how you want others to perceive [you].”

Forbes-Bell says that the way people dress to fit a collective — in this case, a couple — has a direct impact on their self-image. “When you are in a couple, it’s something that you can’t avoid because, as social creatures, we want to establish that bond,” she says.

Vizueta-Hoskins agrees. She says the transition, just like her whirlwind romance, happened quickly. Over time, the two started wearing similar color palettes and would unconsciously dress themselves in different iterations of the same outfit. A few years ago, when the two attended ComplexCon in tan-colored outfits, Vizueta-Hoskins says people would not stop saying they were “#CoupleGoals.” In the Instagram age, this could mean not only intimate synchronization, but digital success.

Neither the Hoskins or Luo-Smith units crave “Instacouple” status. But Johanna Hoskins says that the more she and her husband dress alike, the closer she feels to their partnership. “When you’re with someone, you’re each other’s accessory, basically,” says Johanna. “If you’re dressed similarly, it shows that you’re in sync.”

Expect To See Some Over-The-Top Fashion Face Masks At This Year’s Met Gala

NEW YORK, NY – MAY 06: Hailey Bieber arrives to The 2019 Met Gala Celebrating Camp: Notes on Fashion at Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 6, 2019 in New York City. (Photo by James Devaney/GC Images)

Update: In addition to gowns, jumpsuits, tuxedos and more — all of which will presumably be designed by American designers — expect to see an impressive array of fashion face masks at this year’s Met Gala, too. On Tuesday, the Met confirmed to People that all attendees at the September 13 Met Gala will be required to wear a mask indoors (except when eating or drinking) and provide proof of full vaccination. “We will update these guidelines as needed,” a spokesperson for the Manhattan museum told People.

This story was originally published on April 9, 2021.

It’s been over a year since it was first reported in March 2020 that the Met Gala would be postponed due to the pandemic. Two months later, Vogue made the official announcement that fashion’s biggest night would be canceled completely. Though the About Time: Fashion and Duration exhibition opened later in the year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, no pink carpet was rolled out to celebrate it, nor did Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Zendaya, or any of the other stars who frequent the Met Gala, show up in fashion fit for the occasion. According to Page Six, though, the 2021 soirée won’t meet the same fate.

In April, the publication reported that this year’s Met Gala will take place after all — and no, it won’t exist only on Instagram like many of 2021’s award shows. That said, it won’t be on the first Monday in May as we’ve grown to expect. Instead, the benefit, which raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and is known in the industry as the “Oscars of Fashion,” will take place during New York Fashion Week in September.

Ahead, everything we know (so far) about the 2021 Met Gala.

When will the 2021 Met Gala take place?

The gala will take place on September 13, 2021. According to Page Six, the date was changed in the hopes that, with the current vaccine rollout, it will be safe to gather by then. Whether or not that will turn out to be true is yet to be determined. Furthermore, the date apparently could not be held on the first Monday in September due to the fact that it’s Labor Day, and national holidays trump even Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

Who will host the 2021 Met Gala?

On May 3, Vogue confirmed the rumors about Inauguration Day poet Amanda Gorman hosting the 2021 Met Gala. That, and they filled out the rest of the event’s open seats, naming actor Timothée Chalamet, singer Billie Eilish, and tennis star Naomi Osaka as the poet’s co-hosts. CFDA chairman Tom Ford, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour will be the evening’s honorary chairs.

According to Vogue, each of the four co-hosts embodies American individualism. “They may approach the concept differently,” says the announcement, “but their shared passion for expressing themselves through clothing connects with the exhibition’s theme.”

What will the 2021 Met Gala theme be?

According to Vogue, the 2021 Costume Institute exhibit will combine with the one for 2022, thus creating a two-part fashion display. The theme for the 24-month show? American fashion. Opening on September 18, 2021, the first half of the exhibition, titled “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” will be held in Anna Wintour’s Costume Center and focus on fashion’s ability to tell stories through time. According to Andrew Bolton, Costume Institute’s curator, the Costume Center will be transformed into an “imaginary house” for the exhibit, which will run until September 5, 2022.

The second half of the show, which opens on May 5, 2022, will also run until September 5, though it will be housed in the American Wing’s period rooms. Titled “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” this display will “address the subject of inclusivity,” with the primary question being, “Who gets to be American?” The show will discuss names that have and have not been left out of this group in the past, and explore why.

According to the announcement, the brands on display will include Pyer Moss, LaQuan Smith, Oscar de la Renta, Prabal Gurung, Andre Walker, and Ralph Lauren, among others.

Prior to 2020, Met Gala themes included Camp: Notes on Fashion, which saw Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Janelle Monáe, and Ezra Miller, among others, don fashion at its most over-the-top, in 2019; Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination in 2018, which was unofficially won by Rihanna, when she showed up wearing a Pope costume by Maison Margiela; and Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between in 2017, which featured co-host Katy Perry in custom Maison Martin Margiela, Lily Collins in Giambattista Valli, and Zoë Kravitz in Oscar de la Renta.

The Summer Of Short Shorts Is Here! Make The Most Of It With These 15 Sporty Pairs

The summer of short shorts is well underway, thanks to Harry Styles, Milo Ventimiglia, and Paul Mescal, all of whom have been known to rock gym-ready styles with next-to-nothing inseams. Hailey Bieber, Sophie Turner, and Zendaya, too, have shown an affinity for the sporty style. Now, we want to join in on the action. But while there’s no shortage of options to choose from, with every brand from Nike to Prada serving up some version of the athletic summer staple, finding a pair that’s just right is harder than some might think.

For instance, if you want a pair with high slit sides for 360º movement, your best bet is to try and buy them vintage from the ‘80s or ‘90s (see Ben Covington, played by Scott Speedman, running in Season 1, Episode 4 of Felicity), since the modern versions rarely offer styles that are quite so breezy. Do you plan to wear them more as a fashion piece than a gym look? Perhaps you want to opt for something a bit more exclusive than Nike’s ubiquitous swoosh. Lining, pockets, drawstrings, and rise all play an important role in the short shorts shopping process. Really, it just depends on what look you’re going for.

To ensure that you find a pair that checks off all your sartorial boxes, we went ahead and rounded up the best bare-all pairs on the market. Now, there’s nothing standing in the way of you achieving your Harry Styles style goals — that is, besides 3 to 5 business days for shipping.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

A Case For Wearing Boxer Shorts 24/7 This Summer

Do You Have A Crush, Or Is It The Short Shorts?

A Guide To The Best Biker Shorts You Can Wear This Summer

The resurgence of leggings as "real pants" has only been accelerated by the past year's shift towards comfort-first wardrobes. We no longer ask ourselves whether or not the body-con bottoms are a truly viable option to wear outside of the gym; with the right styling, the right attitude, and the right pair, the stretchy, clingy pant now gets a resounding yes. However, as summer rolls around, the same goes for the leggings' cropped counterparts: biker shorts.

Bike shorts caused quite the stir when they returned to the runway again a few years back, with fashion girls all over the world embracing the controversial trend. And, while we weren't quite sure of their longevity, after seeing our favorite designers from Heron Preston to Rachel Comey manufacturing pairs of their own, it became clear that bike shorts are here to stay. What's the trick to doing them right? Our advice: grab a pair with some length — it's more fashion-forward and makes navigating your shoe selection so much easier. Leggings and heeled sandals? Most likely no. Bike shorts and heeled sandals? Kind of great. Wear with an oversized blazer, a simple hoodie, or with a pretty white blouse, and you're good to go.

Ahead, shop our picks for the best biker shorts you'll need for summer — from high-rise to ribbed and pocket-clad.

Meghan Markle Wore The Perfect Work-From-Home Outfit

Meghan Markle seems to have a solution to the work-from-home outfit struggle we’ve all endured for the past year.

On Wednesday, the Duchess of Sussex released a video for her latest Archewell Foundation initiative, called 40×40 in honor of her 40th birthday, to promote mentorship for women looking for work amid COVID-19. She is partnering on the initiative with figures like Adele, Amanda Gorman, Ibram X. Kendi, Gloria Steinem, José Andrés, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, and Stella McCartney.

In the video, Markle is wearing a white tank lounge dress with a matching sweater, paired with classic suede mustard pumps. In honor of her sign, the Duchess also accessorized her outfit with a Leo constellation necklace.

Since stepping back from Royal duties in 2020, Markle has mostly appeared in the public eye through Zoom, where she’s donned business casual looks, from an Oscar De La Renta lemon tree dress in a Spotify Studios trailer to a Carolina Herrera red floral dress at the Vax Live streaming event by Global Citizen.

As fall approaches, millions of people are looking to return to the office in some capacity, wondering what the future of workwear looks like. Markle’s latest outfit is a good indication of the direction we’re all headed, with loungewear becoming an integral part of the work wardrobe post-quarantine. According to Stitch Fix, the styling service has seen a 60% increase in requests for rompers and jumpsuits, as well as a rise in searches for leggings and loungewear. Other brands like Skims have popularized dressed-up loungewear, with pieces like the Loungewear Slip Dress continuously selling out

Markle’s tank dress is a casual version of the styles we’ve seen her wearing over the past few years, as she has continuously donned shift, A-line, and bodycon dresses paired with chic coats, jackets, and sweaters. Classic pumps have also become one of the Duchess’s staples, and she often taps brands like Jimmy Choo and Aquazzura for her signature footwear.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by what to wear to work from home, try Markle’s outfit formula with the options below.

A Treasure Trove Of Secondhand Khakis: This Year’s Hottest Dad Pant

What do Bennifer, NBC's Steve Kornacki, and your uncle at the firm’s annual office picnic have in common? What if we add Ashley Graham, The Crown’s Emma Corrin, and Kendall Jenner to that list? Tan, pleated, and best worn with New Balance 990 sneakers — the answer is khaki pants.

Over the last few seasons, we’ve seen a rise in interest for the pant style once reserved for dads — including First Dads — on casual Fridays. In November, Kornacki, aka America’s “map daddy,” caused a roughly 90% unit sale increase online at the Gap following his khaki-clad 2020 election coverage for MSNBC, according to TODAY. In the fashion world, Instagram style stars are trading in their vintage Levi’s for the other Americana pants, often styling them oversized and cinched with a thick leather belt, or wearing them low around the hips, Gen-Z style. Designers, too, have adopted khakis, with brands like The Row and Louis Vuitton adding elevated pairs to their spring ‘21 collections

“They are a timeless and chic wardrobe piece for me, because you can dress them up or down,” says Sandra Heinrich Sauceda, the fashion influencer behind the Instagram account @filis_pina, which is brimming with khaki-colored outfit inspiration. Sauceda said that khakis make her feel put-together in a way that other pant styles don’t. Because of their soft fabric and loose fit, khakis are also more comfortable than standard trousers or jeans, making them an obvious choice for daytime — or nighttime — activities (after the year that we've had, what is time, anyway?).

Like that elusive perfect pair of 501s, though, finding a pair of vintage khakis that fits your body and styling preferences can be tricky, especially since there are so many options available on the secondhand market. Sauceda’s solution? “Find a bunch of different styles — baggy, pleated, and high-waisted — and try them on,” she says. She also recommends trying on various sizes and bringing along a belt to see how they look cinched. “You never know.”

Daniel Rodriquez, the Director of Operations at Housing Works Thrift Shops, a New York City-based nonprofit and thrift shop collective, recommends looking out for four things when shopping for khakis on the secondhand market: Durability; pleats; enhancements, like zippers or cuffs; and darker colors, which offer more versatility than muted shades. According to him, you also want to find a pair with intact seams that still has that covetable worn-in, faded look.

In order to make your search for the perfect pair of worn-in, but not too worn-in khaki pants — and get the Kornacki-turned-The-Row look in the process — we rounded up some vintage options, ahead.
