Dakota Johnson On Personal Style: “I’m Just A Regular Ball In The Daytime & Then A Disco Ball At Night”

Dakota Johnson lies about limes. Her family used to have pet lions. She went on Ellen DeGeneres’ show, and casually accused the host of lying, as a fun talking point. Among her celebrity peers, all of whom push the limits of how absurd real life can be, Johnson appears to have the kind of surreal, whimsical existence that children’s books are written about. But, according to her stylist Kate Young’s latest YouTube video, Johnson’s fantastical quality didn’t exactly fall out of the sky. In reality, the Fifty Shades of Grey star is fairly intentional about what she introduces into her life, moodboarding everything from her meals to her emotions: “I love moodboards. They’re like playlists, but for physical things.”

The video is part of Young’s new “Hello Fashion” series where, along with her celebrity clients like Selena Gomez and Sophie Turner, she discusses personal style and how to develop yours. The latest episode features Johnson, who chats about her “minimal and sensual” style, all the while wearing the exact same outfit that Young is wearing: a plaid blazer layered over a simple knit and accessorized with a classic necklace (pearls for Johnson, a gold chain for Young). Johnson’s got an extra hair ribbon, too.

The blazer and knit were expected from the actress, who also wore a big blazer in her viral Architectural Digest home tour. But the hair ribbon and pearls are what Johnson considers to be the items that give her carefully stylized look some dazzle. “I’m just a regular ball in the daytime, and then a disco ball at night,” Johnson said to Young. “Look, I even have a ribbon in my hair.” “You really went for it,” Young joked (we think), to which Johnson agreed (also jokingly, we think??): “I know.” 

Got that? Johnson as a disco ball: Her glittering, silver Gucci gown from the 2018 Suspiria U.K. premiere or her sequin-covered Chanel Haute Couture gown from the 2015 Golden Globes. Johnson as a regular ball: A ribbon in her hair.

Fans of Telfar’s iconic Shopping Bag have been on high alert this summer, especially after last month’s restock left many shoppers empty-handed. In fact, the Brooklyn-based fashion brand’s entire website had to be shut down in an effort to ward off bots. “Telfar is for the people, not bots,” it shared via Instagram stories. “Store on ice while we root them out.” In early August, another restock was met with the same outcome. This week, though, the brand is taking matters into its own hands. 

On Monday, Telfar announced the Bag Security Program, a one-day-only shopping event that will grant all Telfar shoppers a foolproof method of obtaining the exact Shopping Bag(s) they’ve been trying (and failing) to buy this summer. Here’s how it works: For just 24 hours, shoppers can pre-order a Shopping Bag in any size, color, or quantity with “guaranteed delivery,” according to the brand. “The pre-order poses as a novel business solution to overwhelming demand, as the brand is now unsure of how many bags need to be actually supplied to fully meet demands,” a press release said. “Most importantly, however, Telfar wanted to hone back in on their messages that the bags are for everyone, and that Telfar is for the people.”

Today’s announcement precedes the pre-order, which launches on Wednesday at 9:00am EST and will run until 9:00am Thursday on shop.telfar.net, in an effort to ensure that everyone who wants a bag, knows about the Bag Security Program and can participate in the limited-time event. For those who do participate, Telfar promises to have the bag on their doorstep by January 15 at the latest, barring any “unforeseen delay or disaster.” If, say, an “asteroid” hits, thus delaying the arrival of your Telfar Shopping Bag(s), the brand promises that you’ll be the first to know. Following the 24-hour-sale, Telfar will go back to offering bag restocks by color and size periodically.

“We are doing this so that there is a way to guarantee you your bag without you having to deal with the stress of drops,” the brand wrote in a release. “We will continue to do drops and are working on getting more and more product — but this is a way to both support us, buy direct, and GUARANTEE yourself a bag — even if you have to wait for it.”

What do you do when you’re quarantining, but also need an outfit for The Tonight Show? (Couldn’t be us!!) But if you’re Tracee Ellis Ross, you have your stylist throw a suit by one of Timothée Chalamet’s favorite brands over your fence, and then squeeze in a little backyard photoshoot to commemorate the occasion (because, frankly, any moment we’re not in sweatpants is a moment worth celebrating). 

On Tuesday, for her virtual date with Jimmy Fallon, the black-ish star worked with her stylist, the formidable Karla Welch, to source a red, oversized suit by Sterling Ruby, the contemporary artist most known in fashion for his collaborations with Raf Simons, who started his own fashion label called S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA. The suit features passages from The Night Before Christmas and was worn with pieces from Ross’ own wardrobe, including lace-up boots from the celebrity favorite Gucci x North Face collaboration (see: fit pics from J.Lo, Jodie Turner-Smith, and A$AP Rocky) and “cutie old” Celine hoops. In full, it was a look just bold enough for a TV interview filmed on your sofa; no more, no less.

In October 2019, during the press tour for The King, Chalamet arrived at a red carpet event in Busan, South Korea wearing paint-splattered, denim overalls from S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA. with a matching button-down and white, lug-soled boots. Like Ross, he also bore a bold lip — hers in her signature shade of red, and his a clear lip gloss. 

Really, Ross and Chalamet make the perfect fashion duo, often twinning right under our noses.
