21 Black Wedding Dresses Wednesday Addams Could Get Married In

As Refinery29’s fashion writer Frances Solá-Santiago previously reported, black wedding dresses are on the rise for brides-to-be. While wearing black is certainly the atypical route — white wedding dresses obviously still reign in the bridal category — the idea of a noir-as-night dress for nuptials is far from just a style trend. Solá-Santiago points out that plenty of notable folks have worn black as an alternative wedding dress: Chloë Sevigny got married in black for City Hall (and subsequently wore white for her actual ceremony and parties) and Sarah Jessica Parker wore black for her 1997 wedding (though she had told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live years later that she now regrets the decision).

But the bold decision to wear a black wedding dress should be far from regretful, and instead be an act of defiance against the wedding tradition of sending off the “innocent” or “pure” bride. For creative director Lydia Pang (who is also a former R29 staffer), wearing a black gown for her wedding was an absolutely fitting choice given her everyday black-on-black aesthetic. Sometimes, white simply isn’t someone’s color — why spend money on a white dress if it goes against a bride’s personal style? In turn, black is a natural option for the white-adverse, nontraditional bride. You can never go wrong with black: it’s elegant, classic, and dramatic no matter how you slice it.

Ahead, we round up an assortment of inky-black dresses we think Wednesday Addams would approve of for her own hypothetical wedding day. From under-$100 stunners to mid-range black dresses embellished with sparkles to a nearly $6K sculptural column gown, all of these picks are high-octane chic and could absolutely be pulled off for any kind of unconventional nuptial.

6 Fresh Color Trends To Inspire Your Summer 2023 Style

With the temperature outside rising, we feel compelled to introduce bright colors back into our wardrobes. Vibrant shades, such as orange and turquoise, always seem to end up among the mix. But for 2023, the trending spring and summer colors feel somewhat unexpected.

For example, neutrals, which are typically big during the fall and winter months, ended up gracing the season’s hottest runways, with black being a designer favorite for the summer. And after seasons of a hot pink takeover (a hue that, yes, is still going strong), we spotted a brand new interpretation of Barbiecore trend: a bright blue that the character would no doubt approve of (and has definitely worn before).

A great thing about focusing on spring and summer color trends instead of specific products is that it leaves plenty of room to showcase your personal style (no need to sport a maxi skirt if that’s not your thing). For those hoping for a quick update, adding a seasonal accessory to your look, whether it’s a tote bag or a piece of jewelry, is an easy way to join in on the fun. There’s also the opportunity to go all out, rocking one color scheme from head to toe with a monochromatic outfit. The choice is up to you, though, of course, we’re here to provide a little help.

Ahead, we’ve rounded up six spring and summer color trends to wear from now until September, along with a few great pieces to shop for each.

Color Trend Summer 2023: Purple

There’s nothing wrong with a deep, regal shade of purple, but a lighter version appeared to be fashion’s favorite this time around: WSGN, a trend forecasting site, labeled "digital lavender" the color of the year, and the same shade even popped up on the fall 2023 runways, meaning you’ll get plenty of wear out of whatever you buy now.Photo: Monica Feudi/Brandon Maxwell

If pastels aren’t your thing, deeper shades of purple are a great way to ease into the digital lavender takeover. Acid-washed with a baggy, ‘90s-inspired fit, these eggplant-tinged jeans take the spring color trend into grunge territory and can be worn well into fall.

Green? Yellow? This color is a blend of both and perfect for summer. We can easily imagine slipping on this skin-baring Sergio Hudson look for a night out. Color Trend Summer 2023: Barbie Blue

For those looking for a fresh take on the viral Barbiecore trend, it’s time to embrace cyan blue. Not only did Christian Siriano’s Spring 2023 collection feature a bright blue tulle dress that reminded us of the doll, but Margot Robbie herself was spotted wearing the color in the Barbie movie promo images. Thankfully, your own look doesn’t have to be as elaborate or extreme — Stella McCartney used the same shade for a simple, oversized suit.Photo: Courtesy of Stella McCartney

Color Trend Summer 2023: Red

Technically, red is a seasonless color — it pops up whenever the leaves start to fall and is a mainstay during the winter holidays. Still, that didn’t prevent the bold hue from making a statement in Spring 2023 collections from Loewe, LaQuan Smith, Akris, and more. While all versions of red will heat up your warm-weather outfits, we’re leaning toward a shade with an orange tint, which feels especially fiery and fun for summer.Photo: Selwyn Tungol/LaQuan Smith

Think beyond layered chain necklaces and big hoop earrings (although those are perfectly acceptable interpretations of the color). Mango x Simon Miller Is The Vacation-Ready Collab You’ll Wear All Summer

If you’re not sure whether you want to spend your summer exploring the coast of California or making your way through the Mediterranean, the new Mango x Simon Miller collaboration is here to provide the warm-weather wardrobe of your dreams no matter where your vacation takes you.

The 73-piece line, out today, blends the summer aesthetic the Spanish retailer is known for with the unabashed boldness and cheekiness of the California-based brand which has made a name for itself thanks to its playful shoes and vibrantly colored apparel. “The root of Mango’s DNA is the Mediterranean, so I kind of thought, What does ‘Mediterranean’ mean to Simon Miller?” Chelsea Hansford, the Simon Miller creative director and CEO, told Refinery29 of the inspiration during the collection’s launch event in Menorca, Spain. “I dreamed up this fisherwoman [muse], and built this under-the-sea world.”

The maritime references translated into bead-embellished fishnet dresses that could double up as cover-ups, seashell-adorned straw bags that look plucked from the ocean after years of being lost at sea, and comically oversized hats inspired by the raffia umbrellas that dot Spain’s beaches, as well as printed matching sets, bright dresses with fringe, and graphic tees.

“I would describe the pieces as ‘playful luxury,’” says Hansford of the collection that ranges in price from $35.99 to $249. “They’re playful but in luxury, classic silhouettes, so they’re really balanced. The collection is attainable, and that’s kind of the beauty of it.”

True to the Simon Miller brand, accessories play a central role in the drop, with the label’s ubiquitous platform shoe silhouettes appearing in the form of colorful slides and a sky-high flip-flop heel with an architectural sole. This is rounded out by sun-shaped jewelry, printed bucket hats, and cartoon-like balloon sunglasses, with the latter being a first for the label. “I don’t have sunglasses in my main line, and they are such an important part of the way I personally dress and style. So to test them out with Mango, that was really exciting for me,” says Hansford. “If they’re very successful, [we’ll] probably do them ourselves.”

The collaboration also includes swimsuits, scarves, and towels. “I design for a lifestyle — that’s always been [part of] Simon Miller,” says Hansford, who creates limited-quantity home goods like robes, tablecloths, and napkins from excess production fabric as part of its Casa line. “When Mango was down to do the full lifestyle [selection] for me, I was like, Finally people can get the full look because it’s attainable. For me, that was like the best part.”

This collaboration follows a string of Mango partnerships which, most recently, saw the brand collaborating with influencer Camille Charrière on a collection of holiday party-ready looks. “Collaborations make us think out of the box, to go out a little bit of the routine that we have on the [main] collections, and it lets us do something different,” Justicia Ruano, creative director of Mango’s womenswear, tells Refinery29. “We try to look for brands or for influencers or collaborations that we have something in common with, and we thought about Simon Miller. They have this summer collection approach — very colorful, very playful — they have this freshness.” According to Hansford, once approached by the Mango team, the collaboration was a “no-brainer” for her: “[Both of us] design for the working creative.”

This “perfect synergy” made for a seamless process when it came to creating looks together. “Because they are designers, we spoke the same language with them. So the process was very creative and very easy,” says Ruano. “We were very interested in understanding each other and the identity of the brands, and we tried to respect and mix it together… We tried to make a mix between the West Coast in California and the Mediterranean Coast and making it like a cocktail.”

The result is a refreshing spritz of pieces that shoppers can sport “anywhere and everywhere all over the summer,” according to Hansford: “You can wear them in the Caribbean and look amazing. You can wear them in the Mediterranean and look amazing… You can wear them in the middle of the countryside and upstate New York and look amazing. All you need is some sun.”

Book your next vacation and shop the Mango x Simon Miller collection now.
