I Found The Polished Theory Staples To Build An Elevated Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule wardrobes have a timeless appeal, but we really feel their pull during fall, when the transitional weather makes dressing feel chaotic and we all long for reliable staples that can see us through any event or temperature change. I know the struggle is real, and readers, I’m wholeheartedly here with you. Ever since I entered my mid-20s, I’ve been searching for timeless interchangeable pieces that I can fashion for the office to elevated work events and weekend gatherings with friends. Luckily, I found fresh staples from Theory’s Wardrobe Collection for my fall wardrobe, so before you pull out your leather jackets and heavy wool coats, let us direct you to the brand’s newest offerings.

Theory has curated a monochromatic collection filled with quintessential staples including crisp tailored pants, ultra-lightweight outerwear, and soft layerable tops. Add fresh, timeless basics and statement pieces to your fall closet like I did, with all the various silk, merino wool, and Japanese Admiral Crepe silhouettes. I’ll be showcasing my favorite styles like the Theory’s Shell Tank In Silk Georgette, Treeca Pants In Good Wool, and the Oaklane Trench Coat and how to style it for the season. The contemporary brand is home to some of the most high-quality clothing that can make any weekend outing or office look elevated and chic, and trust me when I say you’ll want a piece or two.

How To Style Theory’s Capsule Wardrobe

An Elevated Weekend Outing Look

With Theory’s Shell Tank & Treeca Pants In Good Wool

First off, PTL for Theory’s airy Shell Top. I’ll take any brisk cold day over hot weather. In my book, nothing’s worse than wearing a heat tech sweater or turtleneck underneath a wool coat and then reaching your designated location drenched in sweat. For those unexpected fall days when the sun is in full throttle, leave the long sleeves and cable knit sweaters behind and dress in the brand’s silky top.

When I say that the silk tank is lightweight. I mean it is the flowiest thin tank that isn’t see through and always drapes elegantly. It has a subtle sheen for a luxe look that beats all your camis or basic tank tops. If you’re planning on meeting friends at a fancy brunch or attending a lavish outing, the Shell Top is the chic and breezy piece to wear. Sip on hot coffee or tea and socialize for hours at a park or outdoor cafe, without having to fan yourself or immediately opt for an iced drink. I wore my tank to visit one of my favorite French bakeries in New York City and found the piece to be so breezy.

Unlike than a cowl tank, which is also a clasis layering piece, I personally think that the top is flattering with its modest neckline and straight silhouette — I opted for a size small for a slightly fitted look. I already know the top will be a truly fashionable piece when the weather gets brisk, to wear alone or as a building block for your trench coats and coatigans.

For bottoms, I went with the Treeca Pants in navy. Unlike other tailored pants, it had an ample amount of stretch and was so comfortable to move around and sit in. You could honestly do squats in them — I would know, I tried. Although it’s made out of wool, the pants are silky with temperature regulating and moisture wicking capabilities. To give the minimalist look a bit of sass — since we’re creating a look for the weekend — I slipped on my crocodile print red sandals from Nomasei and my midnight blue Polène Numéro Dix.

A Weekend Outing Look

With Theory’s Shell Tank, Treeca Pants, & Oaklane Trench Coat

With every fall day, the temperature can rapidly dip towards the afternoon even though it was just hot a few hours ago. I like to keep Theory’s Oaklane Trench Coat nearby to stylishly drape over my shoulders when a cool breathe flows by. The polished collar added an additional sophisticated touch to my look. One major benefit to this silky trench coat is that you can freely leave it in your car without any worries about excessive creasing. The coat is crafted from the brand’s signature Japanese Admiral Crepe for a smooth and wrinkle-free appearance.

The trench coat is lightweight — unlike your normal sturdy and stiff cotton kind — and has a similar texture to a soft blazer. The outerwear is suitable for the temperatures in spring and fall, but on colder days you can layer with any of your favorite sweaters underneath. If you’re searching for the usual tan shade you won’t get it with Theory’s Oaklane Trench. The coat is available in neutral hues like black, navy, white, and chocolate brown. However, there’s one statement color of a bright cherry red for the fashion-forward seekers. Since I tend to stick to red accessories than staple pieces, I chose mine in navy blue and a size small. On another note, I found that the styles within Theory’s Capsule Wardrobe fairly runs true to size.

A Coordinated Fall Office Ensemble

With Theory’s Shell Tank, Treeca Pants, & Oaklane Trench Coat

I transitioned my weekend outing look to an office-ready one by switching up the accessories and opting to fasten the adjustable waist tie into a cute bow instead of walking around with it draped over my shoulders. When you’re commuting to work during the morning rush it’s a whole another level. You don’t want your jacket or coat to be fluttering around everywhere while you run to catch the last train. Thankfully, the wrinkle-resistant material can withstand even the most arduous commute. Also, you’ll be cool and at ease while waiting for the train — even in the disgustingly humid subways. You’ll be trudging through the subway, bus, or walk to the office without any fear of overheating. In addition to my tank and pants, it would lok great with a matching set and, of course, along side a work bag. Mine is Freja’s Lafayette Tote in Oat.

Whether you mix or match with the brand’s blazer or coats, Theory’s slim-cut Treeca Pants are especially ideal for showing off your new fall shoes. You can twirl around in your chair from 9 to 5 in the office or attend multiple meetings in different rooms in the comfortable pants. The pleats also add a refined flair to regular work trousers, and the hook-and-zipped closure adds extra safety for any unwanted wardrobe mishaps. For my 5’5″ self, I found the cropped pants to hit right at my ankle.

Overall Thoughts

While a luxurious pantsuit or three-piece set sounds lovely, I have a hybrid work schedule, so it’s a bit unnecessary. I found the trench coat, tank, and pants combo to be a polished alternative to a matching suit, and the styles work together and I can fashion each item separately for a plethora of events, from laidback outings to more professional ones along with other fall staples like the season’s must-have knits or a pair of blue jeans.

I also understand Theory clothing can be expensive, as select styles can dip well into the $200+ range. If you’re testing out the businesscore trend for fall or want to curate your own capsule wardrobe, I would suggest trying the tank or pants first. The two items will probably receive more use throughout the year than the trench, where it’s suitable for specific seasons. However, for those curious about the brand’s other styles, like the more affordable tees or dresses, I’ll add them below for you to take a peek.

8 Biggest London Fashion Week Trends To Shop Now

Unless you’re a capital-F Fashion fan, fashion week trends can be more than a little daunting — not to mention unrealistic — for everyday wear. (See: the ultra mini skirts and sky-high platforms of the last few seasons.) Luckily for us, the latest London Fashion Week, which showcased spring/summer 2024 collections and wrapped up on Tuesday, has been one of the most wearable seasons yet.

Sure, designers are still hung up on Y2K and early 2000s nostalgia, but they are saying goodbye to costumey-feeling, direct callbacks (butterfly tops, logomania), and hello to fresh, modern takes (we never thought we would be itching for a pair of capri pants or a bubble-hem skirt in the big year of 2023). However, don’t expect low-rise, thong-revealing hemlines and halter scarf tops to go anywhere quite yet, though they look more grown-up than ever.

London labels are also looking away from in-your-face colors like Barbie pink and crimson red that marked this year and toward more muted shades. The best part: Not only can you easily adopt all these trends into your wardrobe next spring and summer but you can start wearing them as soon as now.

Keen to get up to date on all things London Fashion Week? Read on for a look at some of the biggest spring/summer 2024 trends to get started on your shopping.

LFW Trend Spring/Summer 24: Florals 2.0

Forget your delicate blossoms and simpering wallflowers, the Spring/Summer 2024 runways were all about big, bold, and actually groundbreaking floral motifs. Those who experienced the heyday of Y2K floral rosettes — from Carrie’s wardrobe in Sex and the City to the 2010 twee renaissance — will see this as familiar territory.

Simone Rocha enclosed actual bunches of roses against models’ skin underneath layers of the brand’s signature sheer tulle, whereas Mithridate and Susan Fang used intricate beading and appliques to grow cascading buds from bra cups, along collarbones and even tangled all around models’ bodies. The flashiest? Erdem, Richard Quinn and Paul Costello adorned models with graphic prints that range from mismatched ditzy florals to moodier black-and-white designs.

Worried about straying too far into kitsch with your florals? Look to David Koma, who adopted the trend with the brand’s signature cool-girl sexiness. Here glittering rose appliques sprouted from simple bodycon silhouettes, crawled up model’s torsos and down their necks like jewelry, were embroidered against sheer tulle in web-like patterns, and bloomed boldly against stark black in neon.

LFW Trend Spring/Summer 24: Pedal pushers & capri pants

Whether you loved or hated them growing up, the 2000s capri pants — or pedal pushers if you’re in the U.K. — are back according to LFW runways. According to designers this season, there’s no one way, or right way, to wear the cropped pants trend. Chopova Lowena and Supriya Lele sent out impossibly cool pairs adorned with hardware and feathers, while Susan Fang and Yuhan Wang offered more whimsical takes with bows, lace trimmings, and sailor-inspired designs and Fashion East’s Johanna Parv kept things simple and streamlined with elongated bike shorts.

LFW Trend Spring/Summer 24: 2010s are back

Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be another throwback having a moment, LFW proved you wrong. This season, designers were obsessed with waistlines and hemlines that were last popular in the 2010s. We spotted countless iterations of the drop waist, several bubble hems and hoop skirts, and even a couple of peplums on the runways. (Just a few days before, Sienna Miller chose a pouffy, bubble-hemmed Schiaparelli set at the Vogue World event in London.)

Some designers had fun with these trends. At KWK by KAYKWOK, dramatic, sci-fi hoop skirts took on surrealist shapes that recalled flying saucers, Natasha Zinko worked in the playful additions to her utilitarian concept in the form of a dramatic khaki green raincoat with a bubble hem and a camo-print dress with a drop hoop skirt, and Yuhan Wang offered bubble skirts for the Strawberry Girl trend. The most wearable iterations of these trends — chic, office-appropriate drop hems and cocktail party-ready peplums — were featured at Eudon Choi, Tolu Coker, Huishan Zhang and Tove.

LFW Trend Spring/Summer 24: Maritime chic

The sea is calling this spring. This season though, designers aren’t just inspired by the mythical creatures that live underwater. Instead, they seemed fascinated by the shells left over after a storm, treasures found after a shipwreck, and more dishevelled iterations of mermaidcore — characterized by raw edges, fringing and barely-there crochet netted pieces woven with glittering beads, as seen at Feben, Susan Fang, and Yuhan Wang. For a more literal take, look to Hector Maclean who offered a “shipwrecked dress” (ruffled strips of sheer material that looked like they’ve been tattered by the sea) and a pirate-like doublet-style jacket

One maritime highlight came from Di Petsa, whose signature is the “wet-look” dress made with artfully draped shimmering metallics and dripping with crystal water drops. This season, the brand has taken that concept to the next level. The runway featured dresses that looked like they were made from scraps of sail material washed up and woven around models’ bodies; beaded headpieces that looked like tendrils of seaweed dripping down models’ faces; delicate mother-of-pearl adornments and a dress printed with underwater shells.

LFW Trend Spring/Summer 24: Mint green

Back in July, fashion creator and trend analyst Mandy Lee (aka @oldloserinbrooklyn) remarked that the favourite color from the 2010s, mint green, would be making its comeback. Taking the LFW Spring/Summer 2024 runways into consideration, where we saw every shade, from washed-out pistachio at Mithridate and soft seafoam at JW Anderson to vibrant green patterns at Chet Lo and Ahluwalia, we think she’s right. (This is further proof to always listen to Lee — she’s best known for coining the names for viral trends like Indie Sleaze).

LFW Trend Spring/Summer 24: Low-rise hemlines

Don’t put away those cargos yet: Low-rise hemlines are staying put for another season if London Fashion Week designers have any say in it. Supriya Lele made a case for letting the underwear show with delicately layered sheer pants and skirts that managed to somehow look elegant and feminine, while Masha Popova sent out low-slung pants with artful hip cut-outs (paired with the other Y2K staple: the halter top). KNWLS also gave the low-rise jeans its stamp of approval when sending out hip bone-revealing pairs paired with bodysuits.

Make way for your new bag of tricks. From Tove to Molly Erdem, supersized bags were all over the London Fashion Week runways. But these weren’t any regular jumbo-sized totes. SRVC featured a slouchy, moon-shaped denim satchel, while Erdem matched a tasselled foldover clutch to an equally statement-making coat and 16Arlington doubled up on bags thanks to an innovative use of belts.

LFW Trend Spring/Summer 24: Knee-High Boots

The verdict is in: Knee-high boots are back in style. Who can blame designers when the versatile style goes equally well with mini skirts as jeans and midi skirts? To avoid the trend from coming off too winter-looking during the spring and summer seasons, opt for colorful, printed pairs as seen on the runways of Ahluwalia, David Koma, and Feben.

Your Guide To Fall's Best Jackets & Boots

Hi, Barbie! Here’s Your Ultimate Guide To Barbie Halloween Costumes

When Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie premiered earlier this year, something magical happened; life as we knew it forever changed, effectively creating a new era in history— a pinker, sparklier chapter where we can all feel free to be our best and most empowered selves. As we continue into AB (the after Barbie era) it’s become exceedingly clear: this year belongs to Barbie. The film shattered box office records (surpassing a billion dollars!) and ushered in a new appreciation and admiration for all things Barbie. And yes, that includes your Halloween costume. If you are looking for a list of “unique Halloween costumes,” I’m sad to say you’ve arrived at the wrong place. This article is for all of us who have said, “Hi Barbie!” to a stranger. The fashion-forward ones who showed up to the theater in shades of pink. The motivated ones who signed up to learn the Barbie dance number at our local dance studio. Everyone who spent this summer listening to the soundtrack on repeat, or donning Barbiecore styles and official Barbie collabs with pride. It’s Barbie’s world, and we finally get to live in it. And this Barbie is pretty excited about that (because pink does go with everything!).

That’s why I’ve combed through the Barbie universe, pulling specifically from the movie, to help you create the Barbie Halloween costumes you’ll feel fabulous in. That said, like Barbie, we are all strong and powerful individuals, and this list is just a jumping-off point to help decide what Barbie Halloween costume feels right for you. From the ultimate Barbie and Ken couple’s costume to fringed and fabulous stereotypical Barbie looks to ideas for groups that get all the Barbies together for a blowout party with planned choreography, consider this your ultimate Barbie Halloween costume round-up from one Barbie to another. Come on, Barbies, let’s go shopping!

How to put together a Stereotypical Barbie costume

From the second Margot Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie stepped into her fuzzy heels and floated down the slide of her Dream House, we were in love. As the name suggests, this Barbie leans into the stereotypical Barbie styles. Which means pink. All different shades. And a lot of it. From two versions of pink gingham dresses, skirt and sweater sets, as well as bows, berets, and accessories, there’s no wrong way to be Stereotypical Barbie, as long as it’s pink-forward.

Luckily, pink gingham dresses from this summer are still readily available (and most of them are on sale!) and can easily be transformed into a Stereotypical Barbie costume with flower accessories or a matching beach hat. Another Stereotypical Barbie Halloween costume is the movie’s adaptation of Southwestern Cowgirl Barbie. Though many pre-made costumes are already out there, you can also purchase pink flares and a pink vest as separates. Or, if you’re feeling spicy, a hot pink jumpsuit paired with a cowboy hat and glitter boots is a great choice. Though Barbie never needs Ken, movie Ken does have a matching cowboy outfit, so this would make an ideal couple’s costume. For more inspo, check out our in-depth Stereotypical Barbie style breakdown.

Something to keep in mind as you do your Barbie Halloween costume shopping: wigs are great. As Robbie commented in an interview to Teen Vogue, an unnatural amount of voluminous hair is key to Barbie’s look, as they reflect the inacurrate proportions of the doll we know and love. Our Barbie pro tip: wigs are surprisingly high quality (and affordable) on Amazon.

How to put together a President Barbie costume

President Barbie, played by Issa Rae, has already become a collector’s doll from Mattel, thanks in no small part to her stunning costume. Her signature look is defined by a blush and gold ballgown, accompanied by a President Barbie sash, and a chunky rhinestone and gold necklace. Grab an official pink folder and pink feather quill pen for extra accessories.

If a ballgown feels too cumbersome to spend the night in, we totally understand. As long as you keep the President sash on, there will be no question as to which Barbie character’s costume you’re rocking, no matter what you’re wearing underneath. We’re also partial to President Barbie’s “Dance The Night Away” look — a white sequin halter and shorts set — for a highly recognizable costume that’s also easy to move around in.

How to put together a Mermaid Barbie costume

Dua Lipa impressed us by playing three different Mermaid Barbies in the movie. Although The Little Mermaid was also released this year, Mermaid Barbie’s costume is easily differentiated by its monochromatic look. Whereas Ariel (with her signature red hair) wears purple on the top and traditional green on the bottom, Mermaid Barbie uses the same color throughout. Just choose a bikini or tube top, maxi skirt, and long wig in one of her signature colors (pink, purple, or blue) for an unforgettable Halloween costume.

Since Mermaid Barbie sticks mostly to the ocean (as most mermaids do), when she does emerge to sun on her rock, she uses shells and other sea creatures as her jewelry and accessories. Barbie tip: Etsy makes some really interesting nautical jewelry that you’ll be able to re-wear and not just use as your Halloween costume this season.

How to put together a Weird Barbie costume

For the quirky and queer, we cannot recommend a Weird Barbie costume, played by Kate McKinnon more. Though Weird Barbie looks a little nuts, she’s really just well-loved. Weird Barbie is the Barbie you played too hard with — perhaps you got too excited and decided to cut her hair or draw all over her face with markers, and you’ve dressed her in completely mismatched outfits from different dolls. And for some reason, she’s always left out on the floor doing the splits. (Splits abilities are not a requirement for this costume, though).

She’s the outcast in Barbieland because she is the most closely associated with the real world, and she is the only one who possesses the knowledge Stereotypical Barbie needs on how to get to the real world. So, though she is Weird, she is also filled with Barbie wisdom.

A Weird Barbie costume is definitely one of the more complicated to put together since it requires a few layers, but we think that just makes her all the more fun to play. The Weird Barbie costume essentials are a pink puffy-sleeved dress, crazy patterned leggings, a petticoat to fluff up the dress, and tall snakeskin boots. She also reappears later in the movie with the same patterned leggings, a pink t-shirt, and a pink bomber coat, but we do think the first look is a more recognizable Barbie movie Halloween costume.

If you want to go the extra mile, we recommend a multipack of colorful gel liners, which make for excellent “markers” on the face. And no Weird Barbie costume is complete without a Birkenstock in one hand and a heel in the other, in order to ask other Barbies at the party if they want to know the truth about the universe.

How to put together a Ken costume

Being Barbie is something anyone and everyone can (and should!) be, but it takes a very special person to bring some Kenergy to the group. Ken appears in a few signature looks through the Barbie movie, but it’s easiest to break them down into three larger categories: Good Ken, Real World Ken, and Patriarchy Ken.

Good Ken’s job is beach (not to be confused with surf or lifeguard), and he likes to wear pastels (a matching button-down and shorts set is a surefire win). If not in his matching pastels, Good Ken enjoys a cut-off jean vest with a pair of white shorts. His life revolves totally and completely around Barbie, so if you’re going to be traveling with a surfboard, just remember to have one hand free to assist in holding her purse or hand when she might need it.

Real World Ken can only exist in a pair with Barbie (as he is accompanying on her journey), so if you’re looking for a costume for your partner, this is an excellent choice. We can’t wait to see all the pairs of rollerblading and southwestern cowboy Kens with their respective Barbies.

Patriarchy Ken is the only Ken who doesn’t need a Barbie (theoretically). If you want all the Kens to come over this Halloween and spend time in your Mojo Dojo Casa House, all you need is a fur coat, horse-centric accessories, and a four-hour-long playlist of Matchbox 20’s “Push” on repeat.

How to put together a group Barbie costume

When it comes to Barbie group Halloween costumes, you’ve got options upon options. But if you and the Barbies are feeling low-key this year, a truly easy group costume is this pink jumpsuit, rocked by all the Barbies as they overthrow the government. That’s right: this costume is political! A pair of pink coveralls (as well as a pink headband and pink sunnies) makes an effortless Halloween costume that’s totally re-wearable. Plus, who doesn’t want to look totally fabulous while taking down the patriarchy?

Our favorite part about this costume, though? It can be a transitional costume. Stripping out of your jumpsuit and revealing another costume beneath is a fab way to fit in more Barbie Halloween costumes to your evening. Because if Barbie knows one thing, it’s more is more.

Planning a giant blowout party with all the Barbies this Halloween? So cool. This Barbie group costume is totally doable (and truly memorable!). In order to recreate this dance scene you do have to learn some planned choreography (which does require a little bit of work, okay, we know!), but the costume part is much, much more accomplishable. All you and the Barbies need are disco-styled clothing glittering shades of white, silver, and gold (which should be incredibly easy since metallics are everywhere right now).

We particularly enjoy this costume, not only because it gives each Barbie the autonomy to choose a look that best suits their own unique style (though you really can’t beat that strapless jumpsuit for maximum costuming impact), but it also means you can recreate this iconic Barbie party wherever you and your group go. Barbie tip: get one of your dancer Barbie friends to teach you the choreo ahead of time. Any time Dua Lipa comes on the playlist, you’ll be able to start an impromptu Barbie flash mob (which sounds like a literal Barbieland dream!).

Still need some help figuring out which Barbie is right for you? Don’t stress. The best thing about Barbie is that she can literally be anything you want her to be. You and your friends can choose a different iconic Barbie to be (we like the idea of one from each decade!) or create your own. Luckily, we’ve pulled some hella iconic Barbies (and how to best achieve their style) to spark your Barbie Halloween costume inspo.

The First Barbie (1959) – striped bathingsuit, white sunglasses
Spotlight Barbie (1961) – sequin strapless black dress, long black gloves
Malibu Barbie (1971) – baby blue bathingsuit, yellow towel
Day To Night Barbie (1984) – pink blazer, pink party dress, white hat
Totally Hair Barbie (1992) – colorful mini dress, long crimped wig

And that’s just the beginning! Remember: Barbie has been nearly every profession under the sun. And if you want to be something she hasn’t been yet — even better! A DIY Barbie costume that represents your own dreams and ambitions could not be more on-brand for this feminist icon.
