Score This Insta-Famous Jenni Kayne Cardigan For 20% Off

Super Sale Alert: Now through October 19, you can shop the Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan and everything else on Jenni Kayne’s site for 20% off. Discount automatically applied at checkout.

There are certain designers who get on our radar not just from their cool approach to style but because they take a slower, more thoughtful approach when it comes to releasing new products. Minimalist luxury basics company Jenni Kayne is surely one of them, though the relaxed pace can also be attributed to the brand’s general chilled-out Los Angeles vibes.

“We like to define ourselves as the ultimate California lifestyle brand,” says Julia Hunter, CEO at Jenni Kayne. “Whether it’s a well-edited wardrobe or timeless home essentials, we focus on inviting neutrals, quality construction, and attention to detail in order to create pieces that you’ll love for years to come.” While $300+ sweaters aren’t my usual M.O., I test drove the brand’s Instagram-famous Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan, and now I totally get the hype.

This style staple, while definitely pricey, is the kind of investment piece I plan to wear until I die. The sweater is casual luxury at its finest, and I know I’ll wear it forever because the premium materials will hold up, the no-fuss silhouette is trend-agnostic, and it’s just freakin’ comfortable to wear. “The Cocoon is one of our top styles — sometimes we have a hard time even keeping it in stock because it sells out season after season,” says Hunter. “To date, we have sold 49,000 Cocoons, and it has sold out five times! So far this year the Cocoon is selling three times more than the next best-selling style.”

If you swear by a supremely curated and versatile capsule wardrobe, Jenni Kayne clothes are absolutely worth a closer look. Many of its biggest fans have even admitted to grabbing their favorite Jenni Kayne sweater in multiple colors and wearing it to bed: “I love this sweater so much, this is my second purchase/color. It’s the perfect thing to throw over jeans, a dress, or honestly pajamas when you’re relaxing at home,” writes one comfy fanatic. And, you too can score your own Cocoon Cardigan (or anything else from the brand, including Jenni Kayne home goods) with 20% off sitewide, valid through October 19, 2022. No code needed, discount applied at checkout.

Jenni Kayne Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan, $445 $356

How The Cocoon Fits:

“Oversized” is quite the understatement when it comes to this cardigan — it runs so large that you could likely order two sizes down and still achieve a baggy fit. For reference, I’m 5’3″, usually wear a medium on top, size 26/27 on bottom, and I went with a small in this cocoon. When laid flat, the boxy body measures 25″ across, which simple math tells us is a whopping 50 inches all the way around when the size small cardi is buttoned up. (The Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan is offered in sizes XXS to 3X.) Drape-y in every sense, the cardigan simply hangs from my shoulders and cascades down to the top of my thighs, right over my hips. The V-neck plunges too deep to wear the cardigan by itself, but some of the models on the Jenni Kayne website show how the sweater can indeed be worn solo.

The Warmth Factor:

The relative weightlessness of the cardigan might fool you — the knit is made from soft 100% Mongolian cashmere, so it’s designed to keep wearers toasty. In fact, I’ve only worn this cardigan over summery tank tops in mid-60-to-low-70-degree weather and at times still felt my pits getting clammy. I also recently sat through a three-hour film in an intensely air-conditioned theater and felt like this cardigan provided the perfect amount of warmth to combat that dreaded level of “corporate office A/C” blast.

It’s worth mentioning that the Jenni Kayne Cocoon silhouette is so popular that it is also offered in other materials and fibers, at cheaper price points (the Cashmere Cocoon remains the warmest option, and is the most expensive at $445 full price). Ahead, Hunter walks through the entire Jenni Kayne cardigan collection to specify how they differ from one another.

Jenni Kayne Cocoon Cardigan, $345 $276

What The Brand Is Saying: “This is the first Cocoon we launched in the fall of 2019 in a cozy blend of fluffy, textural Italian yarn in the colors Taupe and Willow,” says Hunter. “While the silhouette has stayed the same, we now make the Cocoon in cashmere, cotton, alpaca, and have even launched new iterations like the Cable Cocoon and Cropped Cocoon. We clearly can’t get enough of it.”

I get compliments on the sweater all the time.”

The 23 Best Chunky Loafers For Fall

I’m In My Pinup Era. Here Are 5 Ways I Achieve The Look & Lifestyle

It all started when I would visit my grandma in Mexico and admire all the beautiful pinup illustrations from old magazines sitting in her attic. A 1950s catalog, for instance, featured pinup fashion, with photos of Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Natalie Wood, and Marilyn Monroe. Then there were the Cine de Oro movies starring gorgeous actresses like María Félix, Dolores del Río, and Silvia Pinal that would play every afternoon on my family’s living room TV when my grandparents came to stay with us. The makeup, the dresses, the hair, the nails — everything looked so elegant and classy.

Still, I wasn’t really aware of how popular pinup culture was until I did more research. Pinup is thought to have originated during World War II, when soldiers overseas would “pin up” the photos of famous actresses of the time. Two of the most famous pinup girls were Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth. Today, the pinup aesthetic is influenced by 1940s films and 1950s car culture and fashion. It’s a combination of Rockabilly and Old Hollywood glamour, and the idea is that it can be sexy and flirtatious without being overtly sexual or showing a lot of skin.

When looking at the photos and illustrations, I could just picture myself spending hours on my hair and makeup. It was finally time to incorporate this style into my life. Growing up with Mexican immigrant parents, preservation of culture was critical, especially after they settled in a new country: the United States. As the eldest, life was challenging. Eldest daughters — and daughters in general — are fundamental to the way Latino families run; we are often pillars supporting the structure of the family unit. I wanted to set a great example for my younger siblings, but I was also becoming a woman. I was trying to figure out who I really was, apart from my role in the family. My goal was to feel comfortable with the person I was becoming.

I started paying close attention to every little detail that makes pinup culture and fashion what it is. I remember being afraid to dress this way because the retro aesthetic makes you stand out from others who are dressed in more modern apparel. One day, when I was 15, I finally decided to style my hair, do my makeup, and put a pinup-inspired outfit together. I felt brave enough to go out with a beautiful vintage dress, with red nails, red lips, and my hair all done. This was a huge step because I didn’t know how my family would react to such a drastic style change.

As it turned out, the most challenging thing about that step was working up the courage to take it, because the response was amazing. My family was very supportive of my pinup journey and my siblings were so proud of me. From this point on, the pinup lifestyle became part of my day-to-day life. I participated in pinup pageants, started to model, and got more involved in the pinup community.

I drew so much inspiration from those empowering Mexican actresses from Cine de Oro — that’s part of what made pinup culture so appealing to me. It gave me a sense of feeling confident with myself and celebrating both of my cultures. Now, I want to share my love for pinup with others. So, if you’re looking to experiment with the pinup look for yourself, here are my top five essentials for achieving the aesthetic.

Start with the hair.

The original pinup hairstyles featured sculpted waves, bumper bangs, and victory rolls and curls of all kinds. I’ve done all these different hairstyles on my hair, but the classic side-parted waves as worn by María Félix are my favorite.

If I’m in a rush and need to style my hair that day, I go with pin curls. I use a ¾-inch curling iron and pin down the curls with bobby pins until they cool down. However, I get more use out of my hairstyles when I use pillow rollers or foam rollers the evening before, then sleep in them and style my hair the following day. First, I apply a setting lotion on damp hair — I love this styling spray from Suavecita because it helps my hairstyles last anywhere from three to four days. Then, I take a soft-bristled brush to gently brush out the curls without applying too much tension on the hair. (This part can be tedious because I brush out until I get the desired waves.) Once I’m done brushing, I finish off with a dime size of Suavecita pomade and hairspray. To make this style last, I wear a silk hair cap overnight to protect the curls and style it as desired the next day. This hairstyle is so classic and elegant, and it brings the entire pinup look together.

Thrift vintage clothing pieces.

Finding vintage clothes that I love is like finding gold. Not only is it more sustainable than buying new clothes, but vintage clothes just have more personality to me. Most of my wardrobe is made up of secondhand clothes, and with the ability to obtain such treasures, I can define my distinct sense of style and beauty. A majority of the items in my pinup wardrobe consist of cigarette pants, wiggle dresses, high-waisted shorts, and pretty blouses.

My favorite place to shop for cigarette pants is Vixen by Micheline Pitt. Circle skirts are another fun staple for 1950s-inspired dressing. A petticoat underneath will help define the silhouette while giving too much volume to the skirt, and you can create multiple outfits with a black circle skirt specifically. Wiggle dresses, too, offer the quintessential pinup look. High-waisted shorts are my favorite during the summer because not only are they comfortable, they make me feel confident in the sweltering heat. Meanwhile, I’ve sourced most of my blouses from local thrift shops and vintage sellers on Etsy or Instagram. Crash the Party is my go-to local shop in Whitter, CA, near where I was born and raised in Monterey Park.

Always rock red lips.

Red is the fiercest, most sensual of colors — and what do all pinups have in common? They own a multitude of red lipsticks. Although I’ve tried countless reds myself, my staple is Luchadora by Vive Cosmetics, a Latina-owned beauty brand that’s also vegan and cruelty-free. Luchadora is the ideal blue-based red that doesn’t budge or move. It literally lasts all day. Adding this pop of color makes me feel bold and proud. “¡Si se puede!” I often think to myself while walking down the aisle of the supermarket, feeling ready to seize the day with my red lips as I pick up freshly made tortillas.

Find the right accessories.

I love hair scarves and wear them daily. Nylon hair scarves, specifically, are essential for a pinup wardrobe. Thin and delicate, they add color and texture to your look. I regularly purchase mine from a small shop called Continental Textiles. They have tons of colors and patterns. Scarves are for both styling and protecting hair, or to be worn around the neck. I also enjoy adding gold hoop earrings to my pinup ensemble. Lastly, I can’t forget my cat-eye sunglasses, which deliver that final retro-inspired touch.

Finish off with red nails.

Since the beginning of my early adolescence, I’ve adored painting my nails. My little sister and my cousins would always ask if I could paint their nails. I would get the small plastic box out of my room and display an array of nail polishes for them. Yet as much as I love other nail polish colors, red nails are my favorite. They’re a statement piece on their own — a bold red hue signifies confidence, and that’s exactly what a pinup is to me. A pinup is not only a woman that dresses a certain way, but a woman that exudes boldness, confidence, and glamour.

LaPointe’s New Collection Is For The Cool Bride — & Includes Feather Suiting & Cut-Outs

Since launching her eponymous fashion brand in 2010, Sally LaPointe has become known for electric, neon-adjacent monochrome looks that pack a punch. That said, for a while now, the New York-based designer had noticed that customers were buying her downtown cool garments in shades of cream and white for an unexpected occasion: weddings. “Not just like the wedding [day],” she tells Refinery29. “But everything around the wedding, so rehearsal dinner, the brunch after, and bachelorette.” With that in mind, this week, she launched her debut bridal collection — the LaPointe way.

While a wedding line may seem unexpected from a brand known for its bold colors (even the label’s e-commerce site is shoppable by colors), it’s one that LaPointe finds fitting given the rise of elopements and micro-weddings following the pandemic: “I think about the timing right now with everything that’s going on that created this new bride.”

LaPointe’s bridal debut speaks to this reality, one that has forced many brides to rethink traditions and has allowed designers to bet on more fashion-forward trends like suits, mini dresses, and black gowns. There are no ball gowns or princess skirts that often define bridal wear. Instead, LaPointe’s bridal collection features a sheer trench coat and pants, a bias-cut skirt and oversized bridal suiting adorned in feathers, a cut-out bodysuit styled with low-rise pants, and a strapless leather crop top.

“There’s a very big challenge to the idea of tradition,” she says. “I think that that’s a lot of what my brand is about — being kind of unapologetic and doing your own thing, your own vibe.” With a slew of separates, the brand, which counts Oprah Winfrey, Megan Fox, and Adele as fans, is offering pieces that can be mixed and matched for all nuptial occasions, much like LaPointe’s clients did before.

How did a designer who has come to be loved for her saturated color palettes feel about offering a lineup of mostly white and cream pieces? According to LaPointe, that is “the most exciting part.” She adds this new phase will “highlight all other aspects that you might not pick up first when you see my clothes, because that color hits so immediately.” Indeed, all the recognizable details that make up the brand’s effortlessly cool DNA are still there and fully on display, including the detachable feather cuffs, sequins, and silky fabrics.

For the collection’s campaign, LaPointe made a case for a wedding night out. Shot by LaPointe herself, the images show her brides partying in downtown Manhattan. LaPointe admits this setting would be her ideal wedding day: “I like the idea of a small, intimate dinner and like having fun out in the town with your friends,” she says.

Ultimately, with the new launch, LaPointe wants brides to be able to celebrate their wedding day on the most authentic day possible and “be equal parts cool, equal parts badass.”

The LaPointe bridal collection is now available for pre-order

Think above and beyond for MGK’s costume and make sure to incorporate pink throughout the look — he used his pink shoelaces.

From affordable beauty to chic home goods to the latest fashion designer collaborations, we have pretty much become experts at navigating Target’s cornucopia of stylish yet reasonably priced finds. But, while we are very familiar with Target clothing, such as denim and outerwear, we have been sleeping on the mega-retailer’s footwear section for some reason. Some of the in-house labels that have become staples in our wardrobes — A New Day, Universal Thread — have been killing the shoe game, offering season-appropriate options that are comfortable, chic, and — above all else — a good value.

Now, allow us to direct your attention to Target’s current selection of boots for fall and winter. Because it’s seriously impressive. The designs are so on-trend yet practical, from waterproof Chelsea boots to block heels that look polished with any outfit. Every pair of boots from Target comes with memory foam insoles, making them comfortable to strut in all day — even without your thick winter socks.

Read ahead for our top selection of the best Target boots — and the reason they are the perfect updates to your cold-weather shoe lineup. One thing you can count on? These boots are certainly made for walking.

A New Day Penelope Stretch Boots, $39.99

White boots have a special place in our hearts for serving a chic throwback to the ‘60s, one of our favorite fashion eras. These sock boots are as close to the go-go style as they get and will add so much retro charm to your holiday season dresses.

Universal Thread Solita Western Boots, $39.99

Western boots are having a serious fashion moment in recent years, with brands like Louis Vuitton putting their own stamp on the shoe style. These gray ones should hold a place in your cart if you’re shopping for a versatile pair that comes with a bit of flair but isn’t too over the top.

Shop Universal Thread

Universal Thread Tricia Tall Dress Boots, $44.99

The dress-and-boots combo is pretty much a transitional weather staple in our wardrobes at this point. This tall cognac pair, which comes in a comfortable flat heel, will look great with fall dresses that sit below the knees. Just be aware that it does have a bit more of a snug fit around the calves.

A New Day Janelle Dress Boots, $39.99

We love a good block heel boot. Pretty much anything will look good with this classic pair, which has a slightly raised shaft and wide opening — more room for cozy winter socks. The glazed burgundy color is just too irresistible to pass over, and it will look phenomenal with a simple pair of blue jeans with a cropped (or rolled-up) hem.

All in Motion Camila Winter Boots, $49.99

If you live somewhere that snows a lot, these fluffy winter boots are a must-buy. Your feet will be warmly cocooned in a thick faux-fur lining, which sits underneath a waterproof and insulated outer layer made of recycled polyester. The solid rubber grooves also help prevent you from slipping on winter slush, an all-too-unpleasant experience we want to avoid at all costs.

Shop All in Motion

A New Day Chelsea Rain Boots, $24.99

Everyone needs proper rain gear, but there are times when our knee-high rubber boots feel a little hefty after waddling in them all day, especially after the rain stops. These waterproof Chelsea boots, with their elastic side panels that make them super easy to take off, will keep your feet dry without weighing you down.

Universal Thread Kolbi Combat Boots, $39.99

Combat boots are one of our favorite shoe styles: They add an edgy touch to pretty much any outfit without sacrificing comfort, making them a great option for fall and winter. These olive ones will look so chic with a graphic knit or jewel-toned dress.

Dani DMC Is On The Rise—& Bringing Her Confidence Crew With Her

Roll out the red carpet; Dani DMC has arrived. And the triple-threat social media influencer, plus-size model, and confidence activist isn’t alone. She’s bringing along her Confidence Crew (the nickname for her loyal fanbase and community). Dani’s audience includes 1.2 million followers across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, all drawn to her authenticity, expertise, and addicting confidence. While her enviable ‘fits and personable TikToks are enough to command an audience, her bigger goal and motto is “fighting for you to love the parts of you no one claps for.”

R29 recently had the privilege of interviewing Dani and getting to know a bit about her career as a fashion creator, favorite places to shop for staple items, and emerging brands she recommends. She even shared advice for plus-size fashion enthusiasts who are thinking of embarking on their own content journey. Take notes, creators.

As a creator, which platform (TikTok, YouTube, Instagram) do you believe is the best to create content about fashion? Why?

I think the triple-threat combination is a real game-changer. I love each platform for different reasons; they all hit a different age range. TikTok connects me with my young and super impressionable followers (13-20), and Instagram allows me to connect with my college and post-college followers (20-30). While YouTube allows me to connect with the biggest range of young girls to 40 or 50-year-old women who are all looking for the best plus-size fashion finds and a confidence boost!

What advice would you give a plus size fashion enthusiast who just started thinking of or creating their own content about fashion?

First, have a purpose behind what you’re doing. In my opinion, the worst thing you can do is to create content with simply the intention of gaining followers. Then, focus on your passion and let that drive you. Why is fashion important to you? How can you add value to this industry? Who do you want to reach and why? By creating content that answers those questions, you will already have set yourself apart and be one step ahead.

What are your all-time favorite plus-size brands and those that you believe people should be aware of?

My all-time favorite — right now because they’re forever changing — are ASOS, Abercrombie for jeans, and Missguided. Another store I recently discovered in LA is Big Bud Press, which is] women-owned. They go up to a 6X and make incredible pants, jumpsuits, and tops. They’ve taken so much of my money lately, and I reach for their items daily. I’ve never had a pair of pants fit me as well as theirs. It’s definitely a store that needs more attention for their size options and quality!”

I also love exploring LA and finding small brands that make custom clothing or carry plus size. I especially aim to support women-owned and Black-owned brands. I’ll find many women I meet at markets in LA may not carry plus sizes but are eager to make pieces that fit all bodies. Through these connections I’ve made many good friends by sparking that conversation and pushing designers to create for me, expanding and making pieces for all bodies. A great example of this is my now longtime friend Fox – she is a fibers artist, and I met her at a market, and she had crotchet pieces and was devastated when none of them fit me. She then took my sizes and made me custom pieces and now makes custom pieces for all bodies.

Where do you shop for staple items (T-Shirts, jeans, sweaters, etc) and for more niche pieces (corsets, two-piece sets, skirts, etc)?

Honestly, Target has been my go-to for years for my staples. When I was in high school — before Target elevated and made great plus size options — I would shop in their maternity section and still find some items that worked for me! Big Bud Press has also quickly become my go-to for basics, as they have a lot of great niche patterns and items too. Meanwhile, Abercrombie and Good American are my go-to for jeans. I love ASOS and a lot of small online boutiques for niche pieces, but it’s slim pickings on who will carry my size. However, I’m still waiting for brands to create unique and individual items for bigger bodies. I want to be blown away.

What is your current favorite trend, and which trend do you hope to see take off this fall?

To be perfectly honest, I’ve never been much of a trend girlie. Since I was plus size I wasn’t part of it most of my life. I prefer to set the trend (wink) and show how plus-size women can easily be the best dressed in a room! However, I would love to see the trend of every single brand providing clothing for all bodies take off. It’s time.

Why do you think the -core trend (ex. bikercore, barbiecore, etc) keeps taking off online, and what is your favorite?

A lot of the -core trends are specific and a targeted aesthetic which I know people are drawn to. It provides a good outline or inspo, especially for someone who struggles with piecing a look together. When it comes to the -core trend I personally lean more towards bikercore, as I’m really into the silver, metals, and black vibes that are happening right now.

What is the one fashion item that you can’t live without?

This is SO hard. I can’t live without any of it. Nevertheless, I’m a huge accessories girl. I often build my whole outfit around shoes, a bag, or a new piece of jewelry. If I had to narrow it down even more and pick one of those three… it’s a hard pick between bags and shoes, but I’d lean a little more towards my bags. There is nothing like a great bag to bring a look together and be the cherry on top.
