STAUD Quietly Dropped A Selection Of Plus Size Offerings

We’re always on the lookout for the freshest fashion stuffs out there, so when we realized a handful of plus-size pieces suddenly appeared on a certain cool-girl luxury brand’s website, (with nary a press release or peep from the brand) we had to dig through the offerings to see what’s up. STAUD, The aforementioned label, was started by Sarah Staudinger and George Augusto back in 2015 and is known for creating aesthetically elevated pieces that fit seamlessly into your wardrobe. STAUD decided to quietly roll out clothing in extended sizes with their Spring ‘21 collection. Due to the disparity between quality retailers in the straight-sized fashion space as compared to the plus-size space, inclusive launches or collaborations tend to generate a bit of buzz within the plus community (i.e. Lululemon extended sizing and Loft’s shuttering of plus-size options). However, it seems like little to nothing has been said about the new size offering from STAUD.

Could it be that the retailer is avoiding making a big to-do of their new plus-sizes to avoid potential “johnny-come-lately” backlash from the plus community, or perhaps they’re waiting until they flesh out their plus-sizes with more robust offerings? We asked STAUD, but they declined to comment at this time. Whatever the reasoning, we on the R29 Shopping team have done what we do best — combed through and tried desperately not to shop while working highlighted a few that caught our eye. Scroll through to shop some sharp color-blocked knits and pretty flowy dress silhouettes in sizes 1X-3X (18-24) from the new extended-size collection at STAUD.

Pyer Moss Designer Kerby Jean-Raymond To Make Haute Couture Debut

On Wednesday, Pyer Moss designer Kerby Jean-Raymond revealed plans to show during fall ‘21 Paris Haute Couture Week which will take place from July 5 to July 8. The designer, who launched his brand in 2013 and has since taken on the additional role of Global Creative Director for Reebok, was invited to be part of the official calendar by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. He will be the first Black American designer invited by the governing body of haute couture to present during the event, according to WWD

As any aspiring American couturier knows, being invited to show during Paris’ Haute Couture Week — which lists names like Chanel, Givenchy, Christian Dior, Giambattista Valli, and Schiaparelli as members — is a big deal. In spring ’21, S.R. STUDIO. LA. CA., founded by artist-designer Sterling Ruby, was the first American brand on the Haute Couture calendar since Ralph Rucci presented in 2009, according to High Snobiety

Though the official date for his couture debut has yet to be announced, Pyer Moss stated in a press release that more information about the collection will be released in early June. WWD reported that, after a virtual spring season, July’s shows are set to take place in person, though plans are subject to change.

Jean-Raymond’s couture news arrived on the heels of another major announcement: Pyer Moss is returning to NYFW after a two-year hiatus. The brand’s last show took place in September 2019, when Jean-Raymond took to Kings Theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn, to present the third and final collection in the “American, Also” series, a showcase of what it means to be Black in America. For many who were there, the event was much more than a runway show — it was an immersive experience. Through music (the show was inspired by Rosetta Tharpe, the Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll) and expertly crafted clothing, shoes, and accessories, Jean-Raymond and his team made art out of fashion. And really, that’s exactly what haute couture is about.

To add a cherry on top of the designer’s already-impressive year, Jean-Raymond will also see his designs housed at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, in the Costume Institute’s “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” exhibition, which will run from September 18, 2021, to September 5, 2022.

Bridgerton Gowns & Party Dresses Are 2021’s Biggest Wedding Trends

Season after season, little changes in wedding fashion. After all, white wedding gowns have long been the standard. The last year, though, saw the rise of minimonies, where gowns were swapped out for jumpsuits, two-piece sets, and other nontraditional wedding looks. Now colored dresses are rising in popularity and unique trends are popping up left and right. In other words: Brides embraced a whole new array of wedding look options, including Bridgerton-inspired corset gowns, party-forward styles for hot bride summer, and even Nap dresses.

For proof, check out global fashion shopping platform Lyst’s 2021 Wedding Report, which was released on Wednesday. The platform summed up the trends and brands that are currently at the forefront of the industry — and accessories like rhinestone face masks and pearl necklaces, bridal suiting, Regencycore empire waist gowns, and partywear, including sequins, feathers, and more, all made it to the list.

On the brand side, Lyst has seen a switch to more contemporary labels, as opposed to bridal, with Christopher John Rogers, Simone Rocha, Khaite, and Retrofête all being named this season’s top contenders. In fact, page views for white pieces by Christopher John Rogers, specifically the designer’s puff-sleeved, tiered robe gown, have increased by 42% since January.

Other bridal pieces that have spiked this year include Vivienne Westwood corsets, crystal headpieces by Area, Sleeper’s off-the-shoulder Opera pajama dress, and a structured blazer from WARDROBE.NYC. Christopher Kane feathered veils, Amina Muaddi gemstone pumps, and David Koma micro-minis were also highlighted in the report.

All that’s to say, bridal fashion isn’t what it used to be. It’s bigger, bolder, and includes a lot of corsets (thanks, Shonda Rhimes).

No One Played It Safe On This Year’s BRIT Awards Red Carpet

On Tuesday, the hottest names in music arrived on the 2021 BRIT Awards red carpet to celebrate each other’s accomplishments — and boy, did they do so in style.

Dua Lipa, who took home prizes for British Album for Future Nostalgia and British Female Solo Artist, arrived in a Bridgerton-esque yellow-and-purple corset mini dress with a cowl neckline. The Vivienne Westwood look — which also included black, thigh-high stockings and sky-high croc-print heels — was inspired by a yellow Preen dress worn by the late Amy Winehouse at the 2007 BRIT Awards. (Her performance look, featuring a mini dress printed with the Union Jack, was a nod to Spice Girl Geri Halliwell.)

Of course, Lipa wasn’t the only stunner on the carpet Tuesday night. The HAIM sisters showed up in more casual, though nonetheless chic, tailored ensembles from The Row’s spring ‘21 collection. Taylor Swift, who was given the Global Icon award at the show, brought back the two-piece red-carpet trend in a beaded set by Miu Miu. And Harry Styles stole the show in a brown, patterned Gucci suit that appeared straight out of the '70s… with sneakers.

Ahead, find out what Celeste, Griff, Olivia Rodrigo, and more chose for the BRIT Awards red carpet.
