Make-up looks to try for the NYE party
Kim Kardashian’s Christmas Gifts To North West Were Puzzling
Over the weekend, Kim Kardashian West shared a few of the Christmas gifts she and Kanye West put under the tree for their oldest child, North West. Among them, rather unconventionally, were some of Micheal Jackson’s personal items — including a jacket and a white hat. Kardashian West posted photos of the presents on her Instagram story, captioning the hat picture: “Along with jacket, North also got Michael’s “Smooth Criminal” hat. It still has his makeup on it.” Perhaps even more surprising, though, was that she also gave North the shirt President John F. Kennedy was wearing when he was shot and killed.
North is apparently a huge Michael Jackson fan. Page Six is reporting the jacket, which Jackson wore to Elizabeth Taylor’s 65th birthday party, has been altered to fit North and can be lengthened as she grows. So there’s some logic there. But we have a few questions. For example, is it ever appropriate for a child to wear an alleged rapist’s clothing? What is North West going to do with JFK’s bloody shirt? And why isn’t it in a museum?
The visual of the shirt posted on her stories is jarring — and raises questions about why anyone would give a child something so violent. But regardless of the motivation behind the gifts, one thing is certain: Kardashian West is building one hell of a fashion archive for her daughter. Two years ago, she told her fans on Snapchat that she set aside specific items for North — even what her then-boyfriend, now-husband threw out because he deemed it ‘uncool.’
“The fun part is, I kept everything, all for memories,” Kardashian West said on Snapchat, “and when Kanye thought he cleaned out my closet, I kept it all secretly for my daughter one day.” It’s a motive she’s had ever since Kanye invited a stylist to clean out her closet in 2012, which cameras caught for Keeping Up with the Kardashians. In the episode, West holds up an oversized fur-lined purse headed for the chopping block, but Kardashian West quickly defends it. “But shouldn’t I just keep this for, like, my daughter one day?” she asks.
Apparently, the answer is always yes.

Streetwear Subscription Service Threadbeast Now Offers Options For Women
Virgil Abloh may have declared streetwear “is gonna die,” but Threadbeast, a new subscription service, is challenging that, allowing customers to curate their own monthly “drops.” Since its launch in 2015, ThreadBeast has seen a significant increase in requests from women who want the same dope streetwear offered to its male customers. So, the brand has decided to roll out a more female-friendly subscription option.
Threadbeast’s main priority is providing high-quality streetwear at affordable prices. “We do our best to focus on designers and brands that are trending and are actively working to include more options from women designers,” Uday Singh, Threadbeast’s founder and CEO said.
Here’s how it works: You fill out a style profile before joining the service, and Threadbeast’s stylists use this as a guide to curate your box. “We always recommend our subscribers email us with their specific style preferences and our stylists ask for feedback after each is received to gather data for future boxes,” said Singh.
Don’t expect to find the latest sneaker release in your box (like, say Travis Scott’s next drop). Instead, boxes are curated with products already available in stores — and you get to keep whatever’s in your box. “We work with different brands constantly and are always looking for new vendors to partner with,” Singh said.
“We like to introduce members to brands they might not be familiar with and keep them anticipating who we’ll work with next.” Currently, Threadbeast works with over 150 brands including G-star raw, Diamond Supply, Jack & Jones, Primitive, and Levis, just to name a few.
Women are allowed to choose from both mens’ and womens’ pieces for their boxes. “Some members ask for only tops and sweatpants, others for only jeans and graphic tees,” Singh said. Subscribers can downgrade to a different plan, change the frequency of payments and cancel their subscription at any time. The only subscription fee is the monthly payment members make each month before receiving their box. The payment allows members to keep all the items they receive in their box.
If this service is any indication, femme-friendly streetwear might be the next wave for the new decade.

Prince’s Personal Designers Are Releasing A Made-To-Order Line
To coincide with the deluxe reissue of Prince’s iconic double album,1999, the Purple One’s estate commissioned a special, limited-edition fashion collaboration with Toronto-based brand Call & Response. The line is a hand-crafted collection of custom jackets, vests, and hand-dyed tunics inspired by the clothing they used to make for Prince himself.
Lori Marcuz and Cathy Robinson, the design duo behind Call and Response, designed clothing for Prince from 2011 until his death in 2016. They never met him or never spoke with him, Vogue notes, but curated boxes of clothing for him whenever one of his assistants would ask — often at the very last minute.
“We watched a lot of footage,” Marcuz said of the new collection’s inspiration. “We listened to the album again and again, trying to remember what it was like to hear 1999 for the first time back in the day.” They also listened to Prince’s influences, including Jimi Hendrix, and incorporated elements into the pieces of those, too. “There are layers of Prince, and what we experienced working with him,” Marcuz said. In the end, it took three months to make the prototypes for the collection. Everything in the collection will be made custom for each person purchasing, and there are limited quantities of each piece.
“The entire time, [working with Prince], was almost like a blur,” Robinson said. “It was so busy and fast,” she explained. “We learned so much working with him because the learning curve was huge. We’ll never be who we were before.”
Marcuz remembers one specific instance when they dressed Prince for the Grammys, making three jackets in three days for him to wear during the awards ceremony — except two of them were not finished. Of course, Marcuz said, those are the ones he wanted to wear.
“Our time with Prince was a hell of a ride,”Marcuz said. “We miss him. We miss making clothes for him. So this was, in many ways, lovely to do it again.”

These Jewelry-Inspired Earbuds Are The Future December 27, 2019 at 07:13AM
In recent years, many of us have become dependant on technology — our iPhones and headphones in particular — but just because we can’t stop ourselves from bopping to Ariana Grande on repeat doesn’t mean that we don’t also want to express ourselves through the occasional accessory. That’s where Planet Beyond comes in. From the combined brain power of a mathematician, an architect, an engineer, and a computer programmer — graduates from MIT and Harvard, no less — this new brand of wireless earbuds combines top-notch technology with fashionable baubles. And they are actually quite cute.
At its core, Planet Beyond is a tech brand that designs top-of-the-line headphones rivaling those of giants like Apple and Bose. According to Vice, Apple’s option is both unethical in terms of the “unlivable” rates at which the workers who produce them are paid and in terms of the impact on the environment. Made from plastic, unable to be repaired, and unsafe to throw away, Apple’s AirPods are “a product of the past,” Vice explains. So you can see why music lovers might be in need of a better alternative. Unlike its competitors, Planet Beyond has created a design that’s made from lightweight recycled materials, making them almost wholly sustainable. The jewelry-like attachments that go with them are also low-impact, made from scrap metal.
“The inspiration for the first arrival pieces came from the natural elements of the future world, as we introduce to our audience how we imagine a sustainable future will look like,” founder of Planet Beyond Lorin Gu says. “The leaves, the stars, and the sun all took on a mechanical look as if they were constructed in the future. These are the fundamental yet most hopeful elements of the world, and we want to build our Planet Beyond universe with these elements.”
For the founder, sustainability was of the utmost importance. “I came across this old electronics factory through my finance career. This emblem of old economy was falling apart because the development of new technology products has made most of the smaller factories unable to catch up, and rendered them obsolete.” The waste surrounding the tech company is significant, similar to that of the fashion industry; Planet Beyond was designed to counteract that in every way possible. Gu took the old factory and turned it into something new, not only bringing it back from the dead, but also supplying jobs that would otherwise be done with machines. Jewelry, unlike headphones, is best done by hand.
But since tech was their specialty, not design, the team at Planet Beyond sought out a number of jewelry designers to help make sure that their pieces were, in fact, fashionable. And from what we’ve seen of the collection so far, they’ve done a good job. There are currently four accessory options: a sun ray, leaves, and a shooting star, with more on the way. “Our second arrival is rooted in the concept of “architecture of the future.” Without saying too much, we also have some great collaborations in the works and are rolling out our subsequent product categories in the near future (bracelet and glasses).”
If Planet Beyond has anything to say about it, we’ll be donning all kinds of fashionable tech in no time. And while, sure, you could always just wear earrings alongside your standard set of white air pods, where’s the fun in that?

Proenza Schouler’s PS1 Bag Turns 10 — & Gets A New Look December 26, 2019 at 06:30AM
It’s been 10 years since Proenza Schouler introduced its first-ever handbag, PS1. To celebrate, the label teamed up with director and artist Harmony Korine — who wrote the movies Kids and Spring Breakers — for a limited-edition 27-piece collection, featuring archival paintings on three new exclusive PS1 styles.
This is a full-circle moment for the brand, as Designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough worked with Korine in 2010 on “Act Da Fool,” a film featuring their fall 2010 collection (which reinvented the idea of a classic prep-school uniform). And in 2011, they worked together on a film inspired by the label’s southwest collection.
The brand will be releasing a limited run of 400 bags, each embossed with its number. “Blue Check Success” can be found on the bag’s Medium (or largest) size, while “Nudity Clause Line” is on the Tiny (second largest) style. Of course, tiny bags are having a moment, so our favorite is PS1’s smallest offering and features Korine’s “Photo Spirit Looper” artwork.
Cheers to a decade, PS1. You’ve never looked better.
