Loewe’s Fall ‘20 Show Is A Lesson About What Can Happen When You Master Your Craft

Ever since it was announced that Megan Rapinoe, captain of the FIFA World Cup-winning U.S. soccer team and women’s rights activist, would be the face of Loewe’s fall ‘20 campaign, we’ve been counting down the minutes until the arrival of the brand’s womenswear collection. In the meantime, Loewe has dropped hints about the collection, releasing still-life photographs of accessories, close-up shots of the clothes, and clips of Rapinoe and her iconic magenta crop. Those invited to the show were mailed pressed vinyl records of the soccer star’s voice (in addition to a record player, in case they didn’t travel with one in their carry-on).

Like many others this month, partially in response to the looming threat of the new coronavirus, Anderson chose to broadcast the show live via YouTube. The video featured a split screen, one side showing Gwendoline Christie, Karlie Kloss, Tommy Dorfman, and more arriving at the show, while the other gave viewers a firsthand look at renowned Japanese ceramicist Takuro Kuwata discussing how he adapted his process of crafting ceramics to collaborate with Anderson on a series of accessories for this collection. “Loewe combines elements of fashion, art, and craft,” Kuwata says. “I’m inspired by what the house is doing.” Like Anderson, both Kuwata and Rapinoe are at the top of their respective fields. As masters of their craft, they’re pushing against the boundaries of what they do, to turn their mediums — sport, ceramics, fashion — into something like art as well.

The first look was the epitome of that idea: A vibrant green dress with a narrowed waist and petticoat-like silhouette. The dress let Anderson’s tailoring expertise shine, with everything from the draping to the subtle cap sleeves to the perfectly cropped hem. The same dress would go on to show up two more times, once in royal blue and again in margarine yellow.

“I collect Takuro [Kuwata’s] work and he’s influenced an entire generation of ceramicists,” Anderson said about the artist. Kuwata’s work appeared in the forms of ceramic baubles that were attached to the brand’s new lunch-bag-like drawstring Flamenco clutches, as well as breastplates woven into the center of dresses.

Balloon jumpsuits, draped frocks, gargantuan coats, and Loewe’s signature corset-waist fits also appeared in this morning’s show, as did double-balloon gowns à la Balenciaga in the ‘50s, stiff sleeves and collars, and a hefty dose of feathers.

When more designers have found success in going wide instead of deep — of playing in multiple sandboxes and trying their hand at projects outside their core business, Anderson seems to be making the point that there’s value in doing one thing, and doing it really well.

A First Look At JW Anderson X Uniqlo’s Latest Collection

Designer Jonathan Anderson has got to be the busiest guy in the business. Just two weeks ago, the Northern-Irish designer was in London, presenting his “Nouveau chic” fall ‘20 collection for JW Anderson to the likes of Charli XCX, Billy Porter, and Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa on the final day of London Fashion Week. Tomorrow morning, he’ll take a bow at the end of the Loewe show in Paris. But even with two luxury collections on his plate, the 36-year-old designer still manages to find time to create fashion for the people.

Today, Uniqlo announced the arrival of its fifth JW Anderson collaboration. The 65-piece womenswear collection, which Anderson’s themed “British Country Style,” contains all of the pieces we’ve come to expect from him: bold but clean prints and colors; classic-with-a-twist outerwear, including trenches, anoraks, and parkas; and enough gingham for the entire family. Also included are 71 menswear pieces, including the collab’s signature clashing stripe tees, “pocketable” coats, and linen button-downs, as well as 27 unisex accessories ranging from Teva-like sandals to color-blocked mid-calf socks.

Additionally, the collection will include fashion for kids, making this the first time you can get Anderson’s designs in miniature sizes. The pieces include worker jeans, pleated mini skirts, picnic dresses, and denim button-ups.

The collection will be available globally online and in select stores (including New York’s Soho, 5th Ave, and 34th St. locations; Chicago’s Michigan Ave. store; and L.A.’s location at the Beverly Center) on March 12th, giving you two weeks to plan all the ways in which you’re going to style it. Trust us, you’ll need the time!

Mango's New Collection Is A 1-Stop-Shop For Suits

6 NYFW Runway Trends That You Can Buy Right Now

Mango’s Spring ‘20 Campaign Collection Has The ‘70s Vests & Suits You’ve Been Looking For (But For Way Less $$)

As a market editor, I get a lot of questions about clothes. Where to get them? How to wear them? How much to spend on them? But recently, everyone seems to want to know one specific thing: Where can they get a good suit that’s fashion-forward, but not too weird? Usually, I first ramble off a list of designers that specialize in tailoring (Gabriela Hearst, Peter Do, and Tibi, to name a few) before ducking from the inevitable “wait, how much are they??” follow-up. But as of today, my answer to that burning question has changed.

This morning, Mango launched the latest installment of its campaign collection. Among a selection of floral maxi dresses, crochet bell pants, and lace-up gladiator sandals are some of the best — and affordable — suit options that I’ve seen to date.

Mango’s been an underrated player in the tailoring department for quite some time now, offering chocolate-brown suits and short-suit sets before any of its competitors. But after perusing the spring ‘20 lookbook, which shows Rebecca Leigh Longendyke, Anna Ewers, Kit Butler, Hamid Onifade, and Vittoria Ceretti gallivanting around Merida and Valladolid in Mexico, it’s clear that its latest selection is a step above.

This season’s suits are reminiscent of the three-piece Mick Jagger suits from the ‘70s: extra-tailored, with high-waisted, slightly flared trousers, with trim vests, that retail for $140. There’s even a denim option, and before you ask, yes, it also comes with a five-button vest (or as Mango and Harry Styles call it, a waistcoat).

This Mango collection hits during a peak ‘70s moment. Retro fringe flourished in Milan, with Jil Sander, Prada, and Bottega Veneta all presenting their fair share, while more other trends like boho shapes, big flares, and smart prints could be spotted at Victor Glemaud and Moncler x Richard Quinn. But unlike those collections, which won’t be available for another four months, you can shop Mango’s spring ‘20 assortment right now.

The collection also marks a big step for the Spanish fast-fashion brand, as all 38 pieces will have been made with natural materials like sustainable cotton and recycled fibers. This advancement follows the recent news that Mango had joined the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), an organization that aims to promote sustainable practices in the textile industry, and their announcement to use strictly sustainable cotton by 2025. “The company also plans to increase the use of recycled polyester in its garments to 50% by 2025, and for 100% of the cellulose fibers it uses to be of controlled origin by 2030,” according to a press release.

Shop Mango’s suits, as well as other items from its stylish and sustainable collection by clicking through the slideshow ahead.

Original Gucci Jackie Bags Are Less Than $300 Right Now — But Not For Long

MILAN, ITALY – FEBRUARY 19: A model walks the runway at the Gucci Ready to Wear Fall/Winter 2020-2021 fashion show during Milan Fashion Week on February 19, 2020 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Victor VIRGILE/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images)

At its fall ‘20 runway show, Gucci reissued a version of its Jackie bag, the slouchy, hobo shoulder bag first introduced in the 1950s as the Constance, but was renamed the Jackie bag in 1964 after First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis who reportedly used them to shield herself from aggressive paparazzi. The ladylike handbag came in both cloth with the brand’s signature GG monogram and lambskin, and always included a signature piston strap closure. In 2009, the bag was reintroduced for the first time by then-creative director Frida Giannini, who changed the name to “the Bouvier” (Onassis’ maiden name). Alessandro Michele has since changed the name back and shrunk it down; the fall ‘20 versions also come in trendy pastel hues and patent leather.

While the new Jackies aren’t technically for sale yet, you can find vintage versions on various resale sites. Luxury online consignment shop Vestiaire Collective saw a whopping 631% increase in sales of the Jackies in the day following the show, where Jackie bags are priced for less than $300. The runway versions will likely retail for four-figures and won’t hit shelves until June.

Gucci is the latest brand to reissue a beloved handbag from deep within its vault. Dior recently brought back its iconic ‘99 Saddle Bag in 2018, after a decade-long hiatus (original Dior Saddles immediately sold out on secondhand websites, with Vestiaire reporting a 191% increase in price-point, and a 75% hike in overall sales year-over-year after the reintroduction). Other worthy re-ups are Kate Spade’s minimalist box bags and Prada’s original nylon backpack, which the brand has since made into an entire line of accessories, from padded headbands and bucket hats to itty bitty drawstring backpacks and mini coin purses.

If Michele’s history for creating sell-outs is any prediction, the 2020 Jackie bags are sure to be an instant success. But if you’re short on patience, here’s how you can shop vintage versions now before they’re all gone.

4 Denim Trends R29 Editors Are Wearing This Winter

As eager as we are for spring days, winter is, unfortunately, still here. But on the bright side, that means we can indulge in all the styling perks the chillier season allows: layering away to our heart's content, stomping around in our chunkiest (read: well insulated) boots, and, of course, experimenting with denim in all its many shapes and silhouettes. Because while the classic, sturdy fabric is a year-round closet essential, it does lend itself particularly well to helping us stay warm as it keeps us looking cool.

Of course, you could always reach for your tried-and-true, classic skinny jean this winter — but there’s also a number of fresh denim trends worth trying this season, from faux-sherpa denim jackets to 2020’s most in-demand jean cut to the new silhouette that’s bound to take over the mom jean’s throne. Brought to you by Macy’s, ahead are some of the season’s need-to-know denim trends, as styled by two Refinery29 editors. On second thought, winter seems a lot more bearable.

The Faux-Sherpa Denim Jacket

Denim jackets have been around since denim itself has been in existence, but this season, the wardrobe staple gets a winter update with cozy sherpa. The most common iteration of this trend is a jean jacket with a faux-fur collar and fuzzy inner lining. But you can certainly take it a step further and go for one with faux fur on the outside, as seen here. Cozy and casual, this has everyday jacket energy.

The Cropped Denim Jacket

Levi’s has taken its classic Trucker Denim Jacket and cropped it for a 2020 update. Make it a matching set with a pair of white jeans, or layer it over literally any outfit, like this tie-dye skirt. High chance it’ll still look good. The cropped cut is ultra-flattering, while the achromatism offers versatility, so you can really go as mild or wild as you’d like.

Mixed Denim-On-Denim

Denim-on-denim isn’t anything new, but perhaps the freshest take on this trend is mixing up the shades. There are way too many denim washes out there for you not to be mixing them. When choosing which denim separates to combine, consider the silhouettes. Case in point: a loose-fitting top with a more tapered jean for a cool and modern look. You may be mixing washes, but balance is key.

The Dad Jean

Tired: mom jeans. Wired: dad jeans. Sorry momma — the new denim trend is the slouchy ‘n’ loose dad jean. The mom jean may be all about the tapered, butt-flattering fit, but the dad jean is all about the relaxed, sometimes even (gasp) low-rise silhouette. A pair of chunky, lug-soled boots or any other night-out-worthy add-on can help the jean feel less outdated and more chic.
