Love It Or Hate It: The Skinny Scarf Is Back In Style

On her recent trips to Paris, a skinny scarf has been model Emily Ratajkowski’s pièce de résistance, from the netted naked dress accessory she wore to a Loewe show to the red chiffon version she knotted at the side and teamed with a little black dress. And she’s not alone — fellow model Elsa Hosk also sported the skinny scarf look on her feed in October 2023, and influencers like Claudya Moreira and Matilda Djerf have given us plenty of inspiration for styling the neck accessory this year.

While some TikTok reactions have applauded the resurgence of the popular Y2K accessory, others suggest it’s not very practical and associate it more with Disney stars or the Olsens in the early 2000s than chic Parisian attire à la Kate Moss. Still, recent tutorials abound on how to DIY one, use it to take your look from day to night, or weave it into your jewelry or handbag.

Stylist Risa Kostis summarizes why the trend remains divisive: “Since skinny scarves are a nod to 2000s fashion, which is both celebrated and critiqued, you either love it or you hate it. For some, the return of the skinny scarf brings back fond memories of iconic styles from that era, while others see it as a forever fashion ‘no,’” she tells Refinery29.

Of course, skinny scarves date back much further than the aughts. In the 1920s, they were draped along the bodice of drop-waist dresses (which are also trending this year), perhaps knotted loosely at the center to elongate the frame. “These were the debut days of the bob haircut, so it was common to highlight the hair by accessorizing and experimenting with a barely there piece like this,” Kostis explains.

In the 1950s, we also saw the skinny scarf in patterned fabrics, shorter lengths, and more taut styling — perhaps looped around the neck twice, like a choker, with a bow to play up a colorful poodle skirt. Kostis mentions the skinny scarf’s symbolic references in the 1960s, when it was a nod to mod subculture, especially in splashy geometric prints, which could be interpreted as a rejection of conventional styles at that time. And even later, we saw it during the bohemian rocker move of the ’70s — a look implemented by Moss into the late ’90s — with the scarf nonchalantly thrown over a blouse, and a peek of lingerie, seemingly as an afterthought.

Today, the skinny scarf parallels artistic expression (especially when people are crafting their own). In simpler iterations, the skinny scarf can help achieve the “French girl aesthetic,” commonly associated with Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, and Charlotte Gainsbourg. “In this context, the skinny scarf symbolizes an innate sense of style and an appreciation for subtlety in fashion,” Kostis says.

Designers have been incorporating skinny scarves into their runway collections for the past few years — though we all know it takes celebrities and influencers to bring an aesthetic from costume-like territory to everyday street style. Both Kostis and stylist Diva Dhawan point to a few favorite examples from recent seasons, including Gucci’s Fall 2024 menswear and Saint Laurent’s spring 2024 ready-to-wear. In both instances, extra-long strips of fabric were fastened with hardware to evoke statement jewelry, serving as a focal point more than a low-key accouterment.

While there are many mainstream retailers where you can shop skinny scarves today (unsurprising, since Google Trends shows the term reached peak popularity in search in December 2023), both Kostis and Dhawan like the idea of sourcing vintage Chanel, Pucci, and Prada from the likes of The RealReal, 1st Dibs, Poshmark, and Dora Maar. If you’re looking for an affordable ribbon to play with stat, Kostis suggests an option from Jerla, which comes in a multitude of colorways, or the bright and bold lineup at Wolf & Badger.

Whereas Kostis’s go-to styling advice is a basic tank and jeans for a Y2K-leaning outfit, or a poplin dress and slides for a Parisian moment (both ways allow for full attention on the scarf), Dhawan loves the idea of easing into the trend by leaving the skinny scarf loose and open atop basics for starters.

As for whether or not Ratajkowski, Hosk, and the rest of the celebrity and influencer crew can keep the skinny scarf from dying this time around, Kostis and Dhawan make fair points about the practicality of the accessory.

“I feel like with a trend like the skinny scarf, there aren’t enough ways to mix it into your wardrobe the way you would with, say, crop tops or low-rise jeans,” Dhawan notes. “Also, you’re not going to wear it every day or put that much effort into finding more than a few ways to style it. This is why people usually tend to disagree on how real this comeback is.”

Kostis offers a poetic illustration of where your own skinny scarf might be right now: “Often the folded and forgotten accessory that gets tucked away and trashed once you rediscover it during a move, or the strange piece of fabric that hangs in a cluttered mess on a scarf holder you bought from an infomercial, it’s usually the first thing added to the donation pile,” she says, attesting that a 90 x 90 silk scarf you might take on vacation is far more timeless. Of course, someone like Kate Moss, who has yet to retire the skinny scarf from her wardrobe, would probably disagree.

The Hype: 4.4 out of 5 stars; 45 reviews on abercrombie.com

Heads up: A&F was not kidding with either the "90s" or "oversized" callouts when naming this shirt. This button-down is supremely baggy in a '90s grunge-style way — so much so that nearly all the reviewers recommend you size down. "Was looking for the perfect white shirt and this one *almost* fits the bill. It is oversized, originally I got the small but was swimming in it and had to exchange for xs," writes one reviewer, who still loves the top despite its big-ness. "It's a thin lightweight material that is great for layering or for the warmer months. [It's] a bit sheer, I can only wear a nude coloured bra with that. Other than that I love it!" they write.

The Best Drapey White Button-Down

Treasure & Bond Drapey Classic Shirt

The Hype: 4 out of 5 stars, 128 reviews on nordstrom.com

One of the cooler ways to wear your white button-down is with the slightest hint of it not actually belonging to you. While this is descended from a heteronormative trope that we have most certainly evolved beyond, there remains an air of insouciance in sporting a dress shirt that's ever-so-slightly oversized — which means it's also flattering for all body types. "This shirt is so divine. The drapey aspect of the shirt flatters my bigger chest and apple body," writes a reviewer. And yes, this button-down is a little sheer, but don't let that deter you — what other shirt seamlessly works day to night? "I may wear a shirt underneath but I may not," continues the reviewer. "This shirt is so divine. It feels incredible against my skin."

The Best Relax-Fit White Button-Down

Universal Thread Women's Raglan Long Sleeve Button-Down Shirt

The Hype: 4.4 out of 5 stars and 45 reviews on target.com

As previously stated, the classic white button-down will go with anything — so much so that it'll be worn to death. This is one such shirt that will stay with you till its final threads. "This shirt is perfect, soft, and very comfy. It replaces one that I had for several years that developed frays and holes in the sleeves because I wore it so much," writes one die-hard fan. "This one is taking its place and I am so happy with it so far." Best of all? This one's only $20.

The Best White Lace Button-Down

Express Lace Inset Button-Up Shirt

The Hype: 4 out of 5 stars and 3 reviews on express.com

After a while, white button-downs all tend to look the same, don't they? This one begs to differ. Take a looksy at the details and you may be smitten by the gorgeous lace insets, just as reviewers have. "Beautiful top. Fits perfectly. I love the feminine look, great quality. LOVE!!" writes one reviewer. In other words, this white button-down dares to be unique while still staying on assignment.

What Is The “European Summer” Trend That’s All Over TikTok?

Picture this: Your day starts with a dip in the clear blue Mediterranean, followed by an al fresco seafood lunch and a slow stroll through Positano or Cannes. We’ve all dreamed of such idyllic holiday scenes and transplanting ourselves to the Amalfi Coast, Capri, or the French Riviera. And now that summer is officially here, these yearnings have paved the way for TikTok’s latest aspirational fashion trend: the “European summer aesthetic.”

Similar to past trends like quiet luxury and coastal grandmother, this aesthetic puts an emphasis on “clean,” elevated outfits — this time taking elements from classic French and Italian styles. Key pieces include tailored tops, feminine dresses, matching separates, and top-handle bags. This curated wardrobe can be dressed up for both day and night, as well as for hot, humid temperatures. Think: light, flowy fabrics like linen and cotton, intentional detailing like crochet and embroidery, and “old money” silhouettes (problematic implications here aside).

Although the trend namechecks the entire continent, the looks mostly refer to a romanticized idea of extended leisure time in coastal towns à la Eat Pray Love or Mamma Mia. With comfy and realistic travel staples like yoga pants considered obsolete for the European aesthetic, consumers are turning to contemporary brands such as Reformation, & Other Stories, and Sézane for boat ride-worthy summer outfits

This month, attendees’ street style at Paris and Milan men’s fashion weeks showcased looks that align with the European summer aesthetic, from freshly steamed, oversized shirts and silky headscarves to embroidered mini dresses and bold jewelry. Designers’ Resort 2025 collections also featured European-inspired details — Rochas and Nanushka showcased versatile, day-to-night dresses that could easily be worn from beach to bar, while Baobab’s and Eudon Choi’s ruffles and sleek cutouts gave a flirty edge to sunset-appropriate looks. Versace brought out bright summer sets, while Cinq à Sept debuted a Sophia Loren-esque cinched waist — all falling under the rank of swanky casual ‘fits.

In a video that now has over 800,000 views, TikTok creator Jessica Ortiz (@justjessmaybe) described the aesthetic against a green screen of summer outfits like colorful milkmaid dresses, white tiered skirts, butter yellow hues, and linen shorts (not denim shorts).

“If you want to be that It Girl during your Euro vacation, this is what they’re going to be wearing,” Ortiz says at the start of the video. She says the aesthetic is all about details like drop-waist dresses, corsets, layered jewelry and accessories, and emphasizes the importance of comfort via lightweight shirts and flat sandals

“I started making my Europe vacation videos because I was figuring out what I was going to wear in each country I was going to,” Ortiz, who is based in Texas, tells Refinery29. “One of my best friends helped me pack my wardrobe based on a few things: mainly to fit in as much as possible as a tourist and to suit the weather.” Her video is now peppered with comments asking for recommendations for various European destinations like Greece, Italy, and the south of France.

While many of these commenters are looking ahead to planned Europe trips, this aesthetic is not at all restricted to traveling. “The European aesthetic allows people to romanticize their lives, letting them bring out the best versions of themselves,” stylist Carlotta Constant tells Refinery29. “It encourages people to escape modern anxieties and embrace simplicity.”

Constant splits her time between London and Monaco but her tips for achieving a European summer aesthetic apply to any locale. “It’s all about layering and comfort. From a black, off-the-shoulder top and a low-waist silk skirt paired with barely there makeup to a more colorful two-piece ensemble, anything goes,” she says. “Also, comfortable sandals are a must.” Constant currently lives in a red-and-white overshirt from Rhode, a Gant linen maxi dress, and her go-to Loro Piana linen shorts.

For some brands like Lisa Says Gah, this European-inspired aesthetic has been popular for years. Their widely successful Italian Summer print — featuring bright, hand-painted tomatoes, baguettes, sardine cans, and other picnic-basket items — launched in 2022. “As a California brand, it’s always been second nature to find inspiration from the incredible bounty of cuisines and produce,” founder and CEO Lisa Bühler tells Refinery29. “There are parallels between Italian and Californian food cultures: great wine and gorgeous produce enjoyed al fresco under the warm summer sun.”

One of Lisa Says Gah’s bestsellers is a straight-leg jean in their colorful, Italy-inspired Buon Appetito print (which they offer from US sizes 0 to 30). “Ultimately, the success stems from the undeniable joy of wearing something so eye-catching and cheerful,” Bühler says. “The print is versatile enough to wear every day and for special occasions. Why not add some joy to your closet?”

Similar to the mindset of dressing for the job you want and not the job you have, dressing towards an aspirational lifestyle can positively boost your everyday wardrobe. Ortiz says that traveling has helped her learn about her personal style. “I’ve now invested in some versatile basics, like a good pair of trousers and plain tanks and tops,” she says. “Also dressing up every time you go out anywhere? I don’t normally do that in the States but I adapted real quick and now I try to make an effort.”

Next step? Fully embracing the European summer lifestyle by taking all of August off.

Refinery29 Loves: Everything We Shopped In June

Welcome to Refinery29 Loves, the monthly news bulletin where you’ll find the best things to shop and see in fashion and beauty right now.

While the sun might still be hiding behind the clouds some days, the temperature has risen to warm and sweaty, meaning our makeup and fashion looks for the month ahead have to be sticky commute-proof.

When it comes to beauty, we’re leaning into the power of tinted sunscreens, which act as a hydrating foundation alternative with lightweight formulas that provide just enough coverage to skip a heavy base. We’re also giving ourselves the ultimate at-home pedicure for the start of bare feet season (mesh ballet flats count, too) and investing in a summery scent to usher in the lazy, hazy days.

On the style side, we’re looking to flirty skirts, with Y2K bubble skirts and Wimbledon-inspired tennis skorts topping our list of picks. For those who prefer a trouser, the capri pant is holding its own, with cool-girl brands like Sandy Liang and Mirror Palais producing some of our fave iterations. And we can't ignore the ever-growing cult of cowgirl clothing, with lace skirts, scarf tops and cowboy boots remaining sartorial summer staples for another year running.

Kosas Launch Blush is Life

Though liquid formulas have dominated the blush space in recent years, the power of powder is undeniable — especially for oilier complexions. This month, Kosas is launching a new selection of baked, single-pot blushes for the summer season, aiming to both brighten the face with long-wearing color and add dimension. The silky formula even contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and oil-balancing squalane. When it comes to the shades, each two-tone baked blush mimics the look of a natural flush, ranging from a cool baby pink to a fiery blood orange and an even deeper mauve. Plus, the formula is vegan and talc-free.

Victoria Beckham Beauty FeatherFix Brow Gel

Bold brows defined the past decade but in 2024 the consensus seems to be working with our natural brows to create face-framing, fluffy goodness. While this can be achieved through a number of methods, the most effective way is with a strong-hold brow gel. Happily, VB has devised one just in time for a sweaty summer. Combining the silkiness of a serum with a hairspray-like hold, the product promises ultimate staying power alongside actual haircare, thanks to a biotin formula that aims to promote fuller-looking brows. It's available in four shades as well as a universal clear for barely there brow-brushing.

Dear Frances Pre Fall 2024

Choosing footwear for a summer in the city can be a complicated task. A flip-flop might be the simplest way to combat the heat but the clean girl in us craves the safety of a closed toe, making the ever-popular ballet flat an ideal option. For those looking for a luxury offering, Dear Frances has reimagined its Balla mesh flats for summer, adding a dainty strap for running to and from meetings (or, let’s face it, brunch). There’s a riviera-ready raffia design, patent leather looks and even a diamanté-encrusted accent pair. If you're after a little more height, the collection also includes a selection of structured heels — the silver metallic pair is made for wedding season.

Milk Makeup KUSH High Roll Defining + Volumizing Tubing Mascara

Tubing mascaras continue to have a loyal fan base thanks to their long-wear formulas. Coating and sealing each individual lash in polymers (like a cover for each separate lash), they have been hailed as a lengthening alternative to fiddly falsies. Now, Milk Makeup is backing the hype by upgrading its famed KUSH mascara with a clean tubing formula that promises to provide maximum volume and definition. Free of alcohol, the formula uses vegan waxes and hemp seed oil to condition lashes while avoiding flaking or dryness throughout the day. If makeup remover irritates your eyes, you can simply soak your lashes in water for 30 seconds, then massage the mascara away, meaning no need for stinging cleansers.

NARS Limited Edition Laguna Ultimate Face Palette

If you’re lucky enough to be travelling this summer, you'll know the stress of having to pack your makeup into a teeny tiny suitcase. This is why we have our eye on anything that can shrink that stress into practical, compact products — thankfully, NARS has the goods. Released as part of the brand’s Seductive Summer Collection, the limited-edition Laguna Ultimate Face Palette is built around the iconic bronzer shade, famed for its silky texture and subtle sculpting capabilities. Featuring a mix of four shimmer, satin and matte eyeshadows, two bronzer shades and a glow-inducing highlighter, the palette may be made with a tropical beach in mind but works just as well for high summer in the city. It comes in two separate colorways to suit lighter and darker skin tones.

Rhode Pocket Blush

Rhode's Peptide Lip Tint is one of the brand’s most talked-about products but we suspect that the new Pocket Blush might just give it a run for its money. Known for her minimalist makeup and rosy cheeks, Hailey Bieber is bringing a set of six blushes to the market this June, with colors spanning from baby pink (Piggy) to a deeper reddish-brown hue (Toasted Teddy). Suitable for both cheeks and lips, the wind-up blush tubes are creamy and contain tamanu oil and peptides for a hydrating feeling. You can apply the product straight from the applicator but tapping it on with fingers is recommended for an even distribution of pigment and a natural, glowy flush.

Putting the London girl aesthetic on the world stage since 2019, Peachy Den has found fans in superstar Brits like Raye and Olivia Dean, alongside global It girls like Bella Hadid, Gabriette and Kaia Gerber.
