Rosette Fashion Is The Latest Y2K Comeback Trend

While previously associated with 18th-century high society, Carrie Bradshaw’s audacious style in the 2000s and blogger aesthetic in the 2010s, the once-kitschy rosettes are having a trend revival.

During New York’s Fall/Winter 2023 season, rose adornments dominated the runways: Christian Siriano’s newest collection featured romantic flower appliques in shades of red, purple and pink on various gowns while avant-garde womenswear label Sandy Liang showed the design on chokers, sashes and frocks. Meanwhile, Puppets And Puppets took a more daring approach, using florals as nipple covers.

Off the runway, the accessory has also been popping up over the past few months. House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy wore an Acne Studios ensemble, featuring a small black rosette near the top of their suit jacket, to this year’s Golden Globes. The trend was then spotted on Zendaya, who wore a pink Valentino gown with rosettes cascading down at the SAG Awards. Two weeks later, at the Academy Awards, actresses Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman leaned into the glamor as their rosette-encrusted dresses shined on the red carpet. Most recently, Daisy Jones and the Six’s Camila Morrone wore a rose choker at one of the show’s premieres. Morrone’s co-star Suki Waterhouse also donned the trend at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

While the design is associated with the early aughts style and prom dresses of the Betsey Johnson era, rosettes have been a part of fashion for a long time. In the 17th century, fabric roses were sewn onto women’s and men’s shoes as decoration and a sign of high social and economic status, according to Summer Ann Lee, a fashion historian and adjunct professor at Wagner College. However, throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, rosettes became increasingly associated with women’s fashion. “[Rosettes] symbolize femininity, love and beauty,” says Lee. “They’re associated with this youthful prime of your life. They’re also so ephemeral, like all flowers. Having an artificial flower that never dies is something that’s very precious to people.”

In 1756, French socialite Madame de Pompadour wore a navy blue Rococo gown, which featured dozens of pink silk rosettes in a portrait painted by popular artist François Boucher. Her look was seen as so impactful that actress Glenn Close wore a replica of the dress in the 1988 period piece Dangerous Liaisons, a salacious film about 18th-century French society (the film’s costume designer, James Acheson, won an Academy Award in 1989 for his work). Lee also points to 20th-century French designer Paul Poiret’s Josephine Dress, created in 1907, as a notable moment in rosette fashion history.

While the design didn’t evolve drastically in the 19th and 20th centuries, appearing on the likes of the British monarchy (see: Princess Diana) and in pop culture (My Fair Lady), in the early aughts, the ruffled motif returned into style favor in a fresh, high-fashion way. Yves Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2003 show featured dainty rosettes on low-cut blouses and mini dresses, while celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Anne Hathaway donned the floral design on the red carpet.

But, according to Lee, the biggest source of rosette revival came as a result of one HBO hit series. “There’s so many references or connections [to rosettes] being made with Sex and the City and Carrie Bradshaw being a fashion icon. That’s something [to note] in this visual rolodex of early 2000s fashion,” says Lee. At the beginning of the millennium, Carrie wore a giant Chanel brooch pin in the second episode of season 3. The floral accessory was said to symbolize the arrival of spring and new love (remember her short-lived romance with the politician?). The look became such a phenomenon and Bradshaw signature that Sarah Jessica Parker even channeled her character with a sheer maxi dress and a magenta rosette tied around her waist with a ribbon at the premiere for the third season.

Today, Lee says the resurgence of the rosette is due to Y2K fashion coming back in style, as well as the emergence of maximalist TikTok-fueled aesthetics like cluttercore and weird girl: “It’s really perfectly suited for what’s going on in fashion today, which is such a combination of these social media-fueled micro-trends, but also this current wave of nostalgia for the early 2000s and even 2010s.”

However, this modern re-emergence of the rosette is noteworthy for coming full circle as a gender-neutral accessory. New York designer Willy Chavarria’s Fall 2023 collection featured elevated menswear looks, using the motif in the form of oversized brooches and hair accessories. At the 2023 BRIT Awards, Harry Styles wore a giant black rosette choker in tandem with his Nina Ricci suit. In a more subtle approach, Dwayne Johnson and Paul Mescal elevated their suits with small rosette brooches while attending this year’s Academy Awards.

“Something that we’ve seen so much more in the past few years, is the blurring of the boundaries between menswear and womenswear. As a society we’re starting to accept the idea that clothing are inanimate objects that don’t have a gender,” says Lee. “The rosette trend could be an example of how something that’s seen as more traditionally feminine, can kind of break that boundary, and we can see people of all genders participating in it.”

While Lee says rosettes are a micro-trend, she believes it’s one we’ll likely see time and time again. “When we look at the fashion history, roses have been worn and inspired designers for hundreds of years, if not thousands of years, so roses in fashion are never going to disappear.”

Mansur Gavriel’s Signature Bucket Bag Just Went Vegan

Who doesn’t love an apple? It’s crunchy, it’s sweet, and it’s a key ingredient in some of the best desserts. But did you think the fruit you snack on could be transformed into a trendy bucket bag? Mansur Gavriel has done just that with its Vegan Apple Leather Bucket Bag.

After launching the Upcycled Woven Mini Bucket Bag last month, the iconic bucket bag brand has returned with an eco-friendly version of its signature style at a lower price. Mansur Gavriel’s Vegan Apple Leather Bucket Bag features an innovative way to reduce waste, recycling apple skins from Northern Italy to make the bags. You’re not getting any ordinary apples, but imported apples.

After being made into jams, juices, and other food products, the leftover waste from the fruit is used to create the sturdy exterior you see today. The fibers from the apples go through a long process of being dried, dehydrated, and made into a powder that flattens and rolls out into the vegan material. Afterward, the artisans in Italy hand-craft the plant-based leather into the beautiful rounded bucket bag shape.

So how does this elevated bag feel, and what can you style with it? Well, we’re here with yet another in-depth review of why Mansur Gavriel is steadily at the top regarding bucket bags.

Mansur Gavriel Vegan Apple Leather Bucket Bag, $495

The pricing is an important difference between the original Mansur Gavriel Bucket Bag collection and the newly released design. The OG bucket bags come in three sizes: regular ($695), mini ($595), and mini mini ($495), but the waterproof apple leather mini is $495 — the same size as the mini, but the same price as the mini mini. Now, you’re getting a sustainable, bigger-size bag at a lower price and in four popular shades: dusty pink, legendary black and red, jade green, and tan. That’s a win if I’ve ever seen one. Reduce waste and get a new, roomier bag at the price of the smallest.

First Impressions

The bag is surprisingly sturdy and smooth. It’s a different feel than the pebbled or textured Saffiano leather handbags that I own. One note to make is that with all smooth exterior handbags, you’ll want to be careful about any scratches or creasing. Steer stray keys away from this one! Also, this might just be me, but the silhouette seems to bubble out more than my slender Mansur Gavriel Upcycled Woven Bag, making it seem slightly bigger.

How To Style The Bucket Bag

Mansur Gavriel’s latest bucket bag mimics the original polished version, elevating any casual attire. You could freely style the bucket bag with easy breezy spring dresses for weekends or leather blazers, cardigan sweaters, and jeans for daily wear. The bag is an exceptional minimalist staple, as the leather exterior adds a finishing touch. I went for a laid-back street-style ‘fit and paired mine with a chocolate-colored leather shirt jacket, crewneck, and sneakers.

If you’re debating investing in a Mansur Gavriel bucket bag, I’d wholeheartedly direct your attention to this apple leather mini bucket bag. You get the identical appearance of the prior ones at a better price with the added benefit of it being eco-friendly.

The Top 7 Handbag Trends For 2023

The 12 Accessories Trends You’re Going To See Everywhere This Spring

Maybe it’s the blooming trees and flowers that surround us this time of year, but the arrival of spring tends to leave us itching for a fresh start. A rebirth of sorts. And the easiest, low-lift, low-commitment way to sartorially (and proverbially) wipe the slate clean? Accessories.

Whether you’re a lover of the classics or aspire to become more of a risk-taker, you can expect to see trends at both ends of the spectrum — think ladylike slingbacks and top-handle bags to opalescent, sea siren-inspired mules. And in addition to mermaidcore, there’s also the comfortable, casual elegance of balletcore (yes, the ballet flat is *officially* back) and an abundance of Digital Lavender, well, everything.

As with recent seasons past, the larger theme here is nostalgia, with plenty of throwback trends continuing to resurface, this time in the form of early aughts-inspired denim footwear (to pair with denim maxi skirts, of course), slouchy hobo bags, and lots of metallics. Even the flip-flops of our youth have returned, reemerging in a grown-up, night-out-appropriate fashion.

Needless to say, wherever you may fall on the fashion spectrum (or in the spirit of reinvention, wherever you’d like to), this season boasts shoe, handbag, and jewelry trends that truly cater to all. Ahead, we teamed up with Nine West to dive deeper into each one. Keep reading for your guide to the 12 biggest accessories trends of spring 2023.

Balletcore Goes Mainstream

Trend experts have been throwing the word “balletcore” around since early last year, as ballerina-inspired clothing and accessories began appearing on runways and fashion show attendees alike. Still, it wasn’t until this year that we saw the aesthetic truly take off — cue the influx of leg warmers hitting the sock and hosiery aisle. The simplest way to channel your barre best? Your shoes, given that the classic, mid-2000s ballet flat is back in a big way. For an off-duty look, pair the sensible footwear with a bodysuit and layered, lightweight knits. To go full-on prima ballerina, opt for something a bit more on-the-nose, like a tulle skirt.

Mermaidcore Opalescence

And just like that, mermaids are back en vogue. But today’s mermaidcore trend is a far cry from the metallic teal eyeshadow and glittery seashell crowns of the mid-2010s festival scene. Instead, delicate baroque pearl and shell embellishments, sophisticated paillettes, and fluid, seaweed-like frills appear on both clothing and accessories — and while the trend inherently feels aquatic, close proximity to a coastline isn’t necessary. In terms of footwear, the still-trending transparent look gets a mesmerizing opalescent makeover with a holographic, abalone shell-like finish. Let iridescent shoes shine against a simple white sundress, or channel your inner Y2K Ariel with a low-slung maxi skirt and fishing-net-inspired crochet halter.

The Hobo Bag Renaissance

We’ll always have a soft spot for the mini bag, but we also appreciate a bag with a bit of space that can hold our phone, wallet, a good book, and then some. That’s why we’re thrilled to see the slouchy hobo make its triumphant return. While some of today’s offerings nod to the boho-inspired styles popular in the ’00s, there are also plenty of fresh, modern takes on the bag shape — some small yet surprisingly roomy, others gargantuan in size. Overall, they’re one of the more practical Y2K-era trends to make a comeback (ahem, unlike ultra-low-rise jeans) and are perfect for lugging around your daily essentials when you crave something less structured than a classic shopper tote.

Elegant, Classic Timepieces

Watches have had somewhat of a renaissance in recent years, with investment pieces deemed as much a milestone purchase as quality handbags, which explains the rise in popularity of timepieces — particularly classic styles with gold, silver, and two-tone bracelets and modestly sized faces. However, all-gold, square-faced styles seem to be the wrist candy of choice amongst the fashion set. Simple yet elegant in design, a dainty gold bracelet watch looks just as chic with a T-shirt and jeans as it does with a cocktail dress.

Crescent-Shaped Carryalls

Crescent-shaped, croissant-adjacent handbags first surfaced last year, giving ‘90s-inspired shoulder bags and the aforementioned slouchy hobo a more unique silhouette — and if our feeds and FYPs are any indication, they’re not going anywhere. While the exact size, textile, and color will determine whether it can be worn for day, night, or both, we consider this conversation-starting U-shaped style a surefire to make any ensemble more interesting.

The Return Of The Wedge

We’ve seen the classic wedge pop up here and there over the last couple of years, and to the relief to anyone who erred on the side of caution when it came to last season’s towering platforms, it’s now officially back. Much easier to navigate sidewalks and stairs than your classic heel, you’ll find this nostalgic sole on mules, thongs, pumps — even sneakers. Since styles range from casual to formal, you can style them however you please; try swapping them in for your daytime kitten heels and party-ready stilettos.

High-Shine Metallics

Usually reserved for New Year’s Eve parties or wedding guest attire, metallic accessories tend to feel, well, kinda fancy. However, in staying true to the ongoing Y2K craze, we’ll see them enter casual territory this season. Whether classic silver and gold or shimmering pastels and jewel tones, everything from academia-inspired loafers and slouchy boots to mini shoulder bags are getting the high-shine treatment. Because metallic accessories tend to be the star of the show, we suggest paring down the rest of your look; allow them to add some oomph to a classic tee and relaxed denim or a simple silk slip.

The Digital Lavender Takeover

Trend forecasters WGSN have predicted that “Digital Lavender,” a powdery, pastel purple, would be taking over fashion in 2023 — and they were correct. Spring is when we tend to see pastels at their peak, so we can expect to see variations of lavender on everything, including our clothes, bags, and shoes. This particular shade of purple is said to convey calmness, serenity, and joy — all the more reason to wear it from head to toe.

Grown-Up Flip Flops

Remember the squishy foam flip-flops of our youth? You'll be pleased to learn that the (sometimes divisive) toe-dividing style is back, and she’s all grown up. Reimagined with slender heels and chunky platforms alike, the classic thong can now be worn for activities beyond lounging poolside and is perfectly apt for the office, dinner, or even more formal occasions. Given the daintiness of the top half of this shoe, they present the perfect opportunity for playing with color, such as bold neons and soft pastels. (May we suggest Digital Lavender?)

Unconventional Denim Footwear

The idea of denim footwear may initially sound a little intimidating, maybe even a bit over-the-top if you take the patchwork, frayed, and foldover styles seen on the catwalk (or 2022’s divisive celebrity-loved joots) into consideration — but they don’t have to be. Opt for a simple pump, mule, or ballet flat crafted from a blue jeans-inspired textile, which will be arguably more wearable, albeit a bit unconventional. Try styling yours with the skirt of the season: the denim maxi. But if Canadian tuxedos aren’t your thing, slouchy, utilitarian cargo pants in a neutral hue make a great pairing.

Prim & Proper Top-Handle Bags

If there’s one observation we’ve made for 2023, it’s the direct correlation between increased commutes to the office and the rise of structured top-handle bags. Ranging in size from briefcase to mini, these chic, work-friendly purses will have solidified their place in office (and after-work drinks) fashion. However, expect things to be more exciting in the handle department than in former pre-pandemic styles, like scrunchie-like ruching, bamboo, and more unconventional designs and materials.

Ladylike Slingbacks

A timeless style more so than a trend, ankle-baring slingbacks certainly aren’t anything new. Even so, there’s no denying their rise in popularity in recent months, where they’ve popped up seemingly everywhere in various forms — kitten heels, flats, and wedges. Elegant and sleek, slingbacks can easily be dressed up or down, making them a pretty reliable footwear option for day-to-night wear.

Target x Agua Bendita

Founded 20 years ago by Catalina Álvarez and Mariana Hinestroza, Agua Bendita is known for its swim- and beach-wear featuring hand-drawn prints and -embroidered designs by Colombian artisans.
What was the inspiration behind the collection?

Catalina Álvarez: We're from Colombia, so our biggest inspiration always is colors, mountains, birds, flowers, nature; everything that's around us.

[We wanted] our pieces [imbued] with the Colombian, Latin American creativity, which is beautiful to us.
How did you approach the design process?

CA: Our in-house artists developed each one of the flowers and illustrations you can see in the prints. They drew them by hand and then, together with Mariana, I would start putting them into each one of the pieces we have for the collection.

It's so incredible to look at them drawing one by one, the way they develop everything, and the way we keep the handmade processes that everyone loves a lot [from Agua Bendita]. It's our most important value in the brand. That's part of our culture, and that's what we want to keep in any collection we create.
What are your favorite pieces?

Mariana Hinestroza: I love the pareos because you can wear them no matter the day, the weather, you can wear them in different ways.

CA: And the bathing suits. It's not only a one-piece swimsuit [points to herself wearing the swimsuit as a bodysuit]. We created a collection that you can wear whenever you want. It's adapted to women that are powerful, women that want to be seen, women that are super proud of [themselves] and want to show the beautiful things they are wearing and how confident they feel in them.
What are you taking away from this experience working with Target?

CA: [To continue] beliving in our dreams and working for our dreams. This, for us, is like a huge dream [come true]. It's working hard with a lot of passion to achieve our goals. We're so proud of this [collaboration].

Target x Fe Noel

Fe Noel is a color- and print-forward New York-based womenswear brand inspired by the eponymous founder's Grenadian heritage.
What was the inspiration behind the collection?

Felisha Noel: Everything I do is infused with the vibrancy of the Caribbean in it — this effortless, colorful feel — and this collection is basically a burst of that. When people see it, I want them to feel happy, I want them to feel like they're engulfing sunshine.

A lot of these pieces are meant to be able to go from the beach to the street. To be versatile and have a long life. I want you to be able to wear them on the beach [but also] be able to go to dinner or brunch with your girlfriends.

I am a beach girl. I love the beach, I love the sun. And I also love fashion, so it's like, "What's wearable, but what's fashionable, what's functional?" And when I marry that when I am designing, I've hit gold.
What were some elements from your main line that you wanted to come through in this collaboration?

FN: I really wanted bold prints. I knew that I [also] wanted the fit to feel effortless. Because that's one of the main things that my clientele talks about — how they can just throw a piece on easily and it instantly transforms them.
What makes you most excited about the collection?

FN: How many people get to now experience what Fe Noel is. I'm just super excited to see what people are going to say and how they're gonna respond to it.

And see how they're gonna make it their own, how they're gonna wear it. I'm most excited to see how the [shoppers] put their own spin on it. I am going to be stalking the hashtagging to see how people wear it because that also gives me inspiration. After a collection is designed, you kind of put your art out into the world, and it takes on a life of its own, and it becomes something new. And watching that, it's like different variations of your singular thought.
What are your favorite pieces?

FN: [Points to the pants and swimsuit pictured here] These pants are so comfortable, so easy to wear and throw on. You can put them on with sneakers, you can put them on with sandals. The thing I love about this puff-sleeve swimsuit is that you can wear it to swim, but you can also wear it as a bodysuit and it is so flattering.

I like things that look special. I like things that when somebody buys it, they see it in their closet, it looks and feels special.

Target x RHODE

Started by Phoebe Vickers and Purna Khatau in 2012, RHODE takes inspiration from the founders' travels, made wearable for the everyday thanks to timeless and comfort-first silhouettes.
What was the inspiration behind the collection?

Purna Khatau:
Our main line is inspired by cultures all around the world and bright colors, and [is] very happy. So we wanted to bring that to the Target collection as well. The Target collection was inspired by India, where I'm from, and that's where we drew the inspiration for the colors and the prints.

Phoebe Vickers: We always try to ground the collections in timeless shapes and bold and vibrant prints, and we wanted people to really feel this kind of carefree confidence with this collection and really just celebrate spring and warm weather to come.
What were some elements from your main line that you wanted to come through in this collaboration?

PK:
Staying true to the DNA of the brand was really important to us. Color is a really big component of RHODE, so that had to come through. Also silhouettes; we're excited to bring in iterations of some of the bestsellers from our main line to the Target collection.
What are you most excited about from the collection?

PK:
Swim is something that we wanted to do for a long time, and we're just excited to try it out with Target. It turned out really great!

PV: Being able to offer extended sizing is really amazing. This collection runs from XXS all the way to 4X, and I'm really excited that we're going to reach that audience.
What made you excited to collaborate with Target?

PV: Working with Target has always been a dream of mine. They are pioneers or the pioneer when it comes to design collaborations. They've worked with so many designers that we've been inspired by, and this has been kind of a 20-year project for them. So being a part of that history is amazing and an honor for us. Reaching that wide of an audience is incredible.

PK: Also to be able to hit great quality at this price point because of their production capabilities is just amazing.
