The Best Dressed At The 2024 Oscars — So Far

Movies are officially back, baby! This awards season has arguably been the best of the past several years. From films that are giving us something to talk about to an influx of newcomers and winners taking home awards, while there’s always room for more diversity and change (how, in the year of 2024, is Lily Gladstone the first Native American acting nominee in the show’s history?!), it’s been an exciting year in Hollywood — and we love watching it all play out our screens.

Nowhere has that been more true than on the red carpet. This year’s looks have been some of the most bold, classic, and of course, pink, we've seen in a while. From Da’Vine Joy Randolph bringing glamor and old Hollywood back in a big way, to Greta Lee making Loewe a red carpet staple, the awards show fashion has been standing up and showing out.

The 96th Annual Academy Awards were no exception. At the Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on Sunday night, the red carpet kicked off with a bang — or should we say a bump (!!) —  with actress Vanessa Hudgens announcing that she’s expecting her first child, walking the carpet in a Vera Wang gown.

From there, the night was off to the very chic races, with stars like Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Eva Longoria, Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller (in *stunning* Schiaparelli), and more rocking floor-length black gowns. You know what they say, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Below, all the best looks of the night — so far.

Patchwork Denim Is Trending — & So Is Coach’s New Bag Collection

Gone are the days when denim was restricted to your favorite blue jeans, overalls, or jackets. Denim accessories have become more and more popular — from kitten heels and dad hats to chokers and bags. That last one is, perhaps, the easiest way to add a unique twist to your wardrobe, as many high-end designers and classic American brands have introduced (or re-introduced) denim bags to their collections. A prime example is R29-reader-favorite brand Coach: It just dropped its Find Your Courage collection for spring — and you know pieces are selling out fast.

Coach’s collection features denim clothing and shoes, but the real stars of the show are its denim bags and wallets. The brand released its iconic Tabby Bag in a quilted denim, which sold out but should be coming back soon. It also released other signature styles, such as the Rogue, Swinger, and Riya — all in trendy denim that’s been repurposed. I, personally, got to test out the reimagined Soho Bag.

Read on to see how I styled Coach’s denim Soho Bag.

Coach Soho Bag In Repurposed Denim, $395

Coach first introduced the monogrammed Soho Bag in 2006, and it instantly became a classic. So it’s nice to see it reimagined in a denim patchwork design, which is one of the biggest fashion trends of 2024.

Much like the other denim bags in the Find Your Courage collection, the new Soho Bag is crafted from recycled, repurposed fabric. The material is then distressed and stonewashed to up its lived-in, vintage vibe.

The Soho Bag’s all-over denim has a soft — nearly fuzzy — brushed feel, nothing like the rigid vintage material I expected. I also really appreciate the small yet roomy shape of this bag, which comfortably fit my phone, wallet, keys, lip glosses, and more. The strap is also the perfect length for a shoulder bag, and it doesn’t repeatedly fall down.

Styling The Coach Soho Denim Bag

I’m all about a Canadian tuxedo moment, especially when it comes to mixing indigo washes. So this bag (and outfit) is really true to my style. I really love the three denim shades in the Soho bag, so I decided to play off them — styling the bag with my favorite dark-wash jacket and new light-wash jeans. I then accessorized with some chunky gold jewelry to complement the gold hardware of the purse.

I can see myself continuing to reach for this bag when I put together a denim-forward outfit or want to add a unique, modern twist to a street style look. For the spring, I can pair my Soho Bag with a denim mini skirt, and for winter, I can mix it up with a leather jacket.

Overall, the purse is versatile enough to play on several trends, seasons, and personal styles. So whether you’re looking to channel Beyoncé’s Western aesthetic or Ariana Grande‘s indie-boho Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind vibe, go on and cart up a Coach bag for your own trendy denim look.

Spring 2024’s Top Accessory Trends Include Mesh Shoes & Coquette Chokers

.disclaimer{width:90%;margin-bottom:1rem}.disclaimer__lines{width:100%;margin:0 auto;border-bottom:1px solid #999;padding:0;max-width:150px}.disclaimer__copy{width:100%;max-width:355px;font-family:Brown Regular,sans-serif;font-size:.9rem;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3em;color:#333;padding:0 0 .4rem;margin:1rem auto;text-align:center}

On the spring/summer 2024 runways, ready-to-wear was largely minimalistic and wearable –– collections consisted of neutral hues, tried-and-true suiting, and denim-on-denim looks. Accessories, on the other hand, stole the show with refreshed styling cues (think: double-layered bags and belts), staples reworked in unlikely materials, and undeniably cool details (from the trendy bows to heavy hardware).

The accessory trends that are out now in stores offer up something in between. Maximalists are sure to be pleased with whimsical bags like Loewe’s beaded fruit bags (see above) and Puppets and Puppets’ purse featuring a spoon handle. Minimalists will rejoice in newness by updating their belt buckles with decorative hardware or swapping out leather flats for a mesh pair instead. So if your closet is maxed out on apparel and you’d rather focus on finishing touches that can take your outfit to the next level, you’ll want to read ahead to shop these trending accessory looks.

Spring 2024 Accessory Trend: Heavy Hardware

Upgraded hardware is the easiest way to update a basic piece. Whether it be on a classic shoulder bag, a leather belt, or a sandal, statement hardware will make shoppers do a double-take. For spring/summer 2024, Tory Burch featured “pierced” flats, while Ferragamo used molten buckles on their handbags and belts.

Spring 2024 Accessory Trend: Mesh

If you’ve been anywhere within the past few months, you’ve undoubtedly seen mesh flats from the likes of Alaïa and Khaite –– but the buzz on this fabrication doesn’t stop there. Now, we’re seeing the fabric show up in chic heels and totes, too.

Spring 2024 Accessory Trend: Sculptural Jewelry

Sculptural techniques are bringing an artistic twist to jewelry box classics this season –– for example, door knocker earrings and statement studs have gone from vintage-tinged to of-the-moment thanks to contemporary silhouettes. Vanessa Bellan of V.BELLAN calls this approach to design a “modern take on heirloom jewelry.”

“The Star Earrings, Claire Earrings, and Taylor Earrings showcase sculptural design with a vintage nod and [are] reflective of the rise in mixed metal jewelry, ensuring they are not just fashionable but also timeless pieces to be cherished for generations,” says Bellan.

Spring 2024 Accessory Trend: Double Up

A layered accessories look was a popular choice amongst stylists to showcase the spring/summer 2024 collections through a new lens. This styling cue is pretty practical — okay, maybe you don’t need to wear two belts at once à la Maiou and Gestuz, but two bags certainly come in handy on a day that could take you from the gym to the office to a dinner out. Bonus: No shopping is required for this runway trend — just double up on your existing accessories.

Spring 2024 Accessory Trend: Pointed-Toe Shoes

If you thought pointed-toe pumps were just for the office, think again. After a moment where square-toed sandals were the most coveted, pointed-toe shoes are back in slingback styles, extremely sharp silhouettes, or complete with cool hardware for a finishing touch –– all of which feel fresh and more fun than your typical office shoe.

Popular footwear brand founder Marina Larroudé points to the brand’s Ines pump as a fresh take to the style: “It goes well with jeans for a modern look or is appropriate for workwear. It’s very hard to find a shoe that one can wear so appropriately on both occasions while being so on-trend and fresh.”

Spring 2024 Accessory Trend: Chokers

Yep, you read that right. Chokers — a staple from the ’20s that came back again in the ’90s, —are back and there’s a style for everyone. Christian Dior leaned into the coquette aesthetic with their ornate necklaces while Peter Do went for a molten metal look and Jil Sander tapped into new takes on the tennis necklace.

Spring 2024 Accessory Trend: Funky Bags

The spring/summer 2024 collections leaned into hyperrealism through the use of artistic prints and appliques on ready-to-wear. When it came to accessories, funky bags were the ideal dose of camp. Motifs included everything from your favorite foods (see Loewe or Puppets and Puppets) to the anatomy bags at Schiaparelli and oversized florals at Kate Spade.
