23 Fall Outfit Ideas To Embrace Cooler Weather

Ever stand in front of your jam-packed closet, staring at more than enough clothing options, and think: I have nothing to wear? Same. But perhaps the issue isn’t that you’re out of viable outfit choices. You just need a fresh dose of inspiration — say: fall outfit ideas — to help you see your wardrobe in a new way. That’s where Outfit Dump comes in. We supply you with enough ideas to fuel your style until the next drop comes along.

With the fall season approaching, you might have found yourself dreaming of cooler temperatures, fondly thinking about all the long coats, tall boots, and chunky sweaters packed away in the back of our closets. But it’s never too early to start planning your fall must-haves — their sartorial time will soon come.

But it’s not just knits and all-around cozy vibes that make fall the favorite fashion season of many. That much is obvious when you take a scroll through Instagram. The feeds of the style set are already brimming with inspiration, from edgier takes on leopard print, midi skirts and maxi dresses, capri pants, embellished denim, and more runway-inspired looks.

Ahead, find 23 fall-ready outfits that will offer up inspo as you start digging through your own wardrobe to plan your own looks.

Fall Outfit Idea: Midi Skirt & Tall Boots

A patterned midi skirt is perfect for when it’s a tad too cool for a shorter hemline. Pair it with tall moto boots to add more interest to your outfit.

Fall Outfit Idea: Midi Skirt & Hiking Boots

Add even more edge to your midi skirt and boot combo with a pair of Timberlands or any other hiking boot of your choosing.

Fall Outfit Idea: Blazer & Baggy Jeans

Elevate your favorite T-shirt and jeans with a cool-weather-ready blazer. We like the oversized pinstripe look here, but don’t be afraid to try other colors, patterns, and silhouettes.

Fall Outfit Idea: Gingham Suit

The gingham print has been huge this spring and summer, so it would be understandable if you’re not quite ready to leave it behind with the warmer temperatures. Try the pattern in darker shades — like the black-and-white here —in seasonal outfits, like a pantsuit.

Fall Outfit Idea: Gingham Capri Pants

If a full gingham outfit is too much for you, opt for the pattern on a pair of slacks instead. Even better: a pair of on-trend capri pants (which you can wear over tights in cooler temperatures), that have also made a comeback this year.

Fall Outfit Idea: Button-Up Shirt, Capri Pants, & Platform Heels

Or dress up your capri pants with a crisp button-up shirt and a pair of platform heels.

Fall Outfit Idea: Oversized Button-Up Shirt & Clogs

Are capri pants too divisive of a revived trend for you? How about a pair of clogs instead? Style them for fall with an oversized button-up shirt and a pair of cropped jeans, like those seen here.

Fall Outfit Idea: Embellished Denim

Denim is an autumn staple, so why not stand out from the crowd with an all-jean ’fit embellished with sparkle?

Fall Outfit Idea: Leopard-Print Maxi Dress & Leather Jacket

Bring the leopard-print trend into fall by adding biker flare to a sleek maxi dress with a leather jacket.

Fall Outfit Idea: Snakeskin-Print Dress

If you feel like you’ve been wearing too much leopard print, why not keep things in the animal family with a snakeskin print? We love the off-the-shoulder silhouette of the midi dress seen here.

Fall Outfit Idea: Maxi Dress & Cardigan

Extend the life of your favorite summer maxi dresses by adding a cardigan — fluffy or not — on top.

Fall Outfit Idea: Trench Coat & Silk Scarf

A trench coat in the fall is never a bad idea. Add a touch more personality to yours by accessorizing with a silk or satin scarf wrapped around your neck, hair, or even handbag.

Fall Outfit Idea: Leather Trench Coat

What’s more of a fall fashion staple than a good trench coat? A leather trench coat, naturally.

Fall Outfit Idea: Patchwork Jacket

Patchwork denim has already been huge this year, so why not bring the aesthetic to your fall wardrobe with a ’90s-esque jacket.

Fall Outfit Idea: Waistcoat & Turtleneck

Waistcoats (and vests) are another fashion item that have been filling our feeds this summer. Layer yours over a fitted turtleneck to take this trend into fall and winter.

Fall Outfit Idea: Sporty Jumpsuit

Keep things sporty, casual, and comfortable in an athletic jumpsuit. Add layers to the look for extra warmth and versatility.

Fall Outfit Idea: Long-Sleeve Dress & Colored Tights

Long-sleeved dresses are a no-brainer the further we get into fall. Style yours with colored tights for a more fun and playful look.

Fall Outfit Idea: Suit & Sneakers

When getting dressed, remember that the “wrong shoe theory” — wearing a shoe that doesn’t necessarily match the rest of your outfit — works every time. This fall-ready suit-and-sneaker combo is the perfect example.

Fall Outfit Idea: Pleated Wide-Leg Pants

Make a statement with extra-wide-leg pants that are — bonus — pleated!

Fall Outfit Idea: Head-to-Toe Brown Shades

Embrace the warm and cozy vibes of fall with a head-to-toe chocolate brown outfit.

Fall Outfit Idea: Short-Sleeved Sweater

So much about fall fashion is navigating the wild swings in temperature. When you aren’t quite sure what weather conditions you need to dress for, opt for a versatile short-sleeved sweater. Extra points if yours is adorned with bows, like the one seen here.

Fall Outfit Idea: Chunky Sweater

A chunky sweater for fall? You knew it was coming.

Fall Outfit Idea: Maxi Shirt Dress

White after Labor Day?! We do dare when it’s something like the maxi shirt dress seen here — stylish, effortless, and easy to accessorize.

5 Ways To Wear The Boxer Shorts Trend This Summer

From Emma Corrin wearing Miu Miu pants at last year’s Venice Film Festival to Bella Hadid’s tighty-whities and UGG boots, the underwear as outerwear trend has seen multiple iterations over the last few years. But if you’re less inclined to wear lingerie outside (I don’t blame you!), you might be pleased to know that a comfier, less exposing alternative to the celebrity no-pants look has taken off this summer: boxer shorts. The perfect mix between shorts and pyjamas, the menswear-inspired undergarment is a trendy summer staple that comes in a wide range of styles including classic boxer briefs, oversized fits, and linen, cotton or silky fabrics. And: They’ll have you looking cool and feeling cool — because dressing for hot weather is no joke.

Like similarly inspired menswear silhouettes that are in style right now (see: long denim shorts and tailored waistcoats), boxer shorts can be tricky to wear and style. They can ride up when you sit down, may not accommodate all body types, and can feel too casual for certain settings. That’s why I took matters (and a few pairs of boxer shorts) into my own hands by styling three pairs for five different occasions. Scroll on to discover how to wear the trend without looking like you’re ready for bed, and where to buy your own.

How To Style Boxer Shorts For a Music Gig or Festival

Boxer shorts and a baby tee go together like ice cream and a cone on a hot summer day. It just makes sense. Here, I went for a trendy graphic tee and paired the fit with tall boots and a metallic handbag. This is a perfect fit for something casual like a music festival (although I might reconsider boots depending on the terrain).

How To Style Boxer Shorts For Work

While I had my doubts, I actually managed to style boxer shorts for work. While this heavily depends on your office dress code, these Free People shorts are great for work because they’re oversized and the dark colorway generally looks more professional than the standard colored boxers. To dress them up, I paired them with a cotton shirt and leopard print ballet flats. For cooler days I’d add a blazer or leather jacket.

How To Style Boxer Shorts For A Friend Hangout

What I enjoyed about this pair from Pleasing is that it comes with a matching vest, with both made from a thick, opaque cotton — so I didn’t feel like it was too thin or inappropriate for outside. Plus, pairing the matching set with a blazer and bright-colored accessories helped to elevate the whole look. I’d gladly wear this to a shopping date or casual drinks with friends.

How to Style Boxer Shorts For Running Errands

After styling the trend for a few days, I’ve come to realize that I will get the most use out of my boxer shorts while running errands, i.e., carrying loads of bags and stopping for a coffee as a treat. For a more casual outing, you can mix and match boxer shorts with practically any basic T-shirt or tank top and a light button-down for extra coverage, and complete the look with a pair of sneakers.

How To Style Boxer Shorts For Dinner Plans

Admittedly, I stole this waistcoat-and-boxers look from Pinterest — and I’m happy I did. This outfit will be on repeat for the rest of summer and early fall because it’s versatile and pairs well with several types of shoes including trainers, heeled sandals, and knee-high boots. I’d wear this look for an al-fresco dinner or any kind of social plans.

The Best Fall 2024 Sneaker Trends — From New Neutrals To Height-Boosting Kicks

.disclaimer{width:90%;margin-bottom:1rem}.disclaimer__lines{width:100%;margin:0 auto;border-bottom:1px solid #999;padding:0;max-width:150px}.disclaimer__copy{width:100%;max-width:355px;font-family:Brown Regular,sans-serif;font-size:.9rem;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3em;color:#333;padding:0 0 .4rem;margin:1rem auto;text-align:center}

Not to call anyone out, but it’s time to purge crusty sneakers caked with dirt from our closets. Fortunately, we’ve predicted the best fall sneaker trends of 2024 for shopping inspo. Our list is here to save you from endless scrolling, whether you’re teetering on trying the ballet sneaker trend, are interested in new neutrals (aside from classic white sneakers), or finally want a pair of sporty kicks.

This season’s must-haves should, of course, be fashionable and elevate fall outfits, but they should also prioritize comfort. And we think some silhouettes like Mary Jane sneakers and platform sneakers are unexpectedly comfortable styles that you’ll want to try. Shoe trends from last fall, like retro-sporty styles and metallic materials are also staying strong, but with new twists and new brand options. So find your next pair of back-to-school season sneakers, ahead. Because as the saying goes, “good shoes take you to good places.”

Sporty-Meets-Retro Sneakers

We’ve been on a sporty sneaker kick for a while (with iconic retro styles like Adidas Sambas and Nike Cortez’s top of our list), and you’ll continue seeing them throughout the fall. Vintage-inspired basketball shoes, tenniscore court styles, and soccer cleat sneakers have been in the spotlight for a while, but there’s always a twist on the sneaker trend.

On the chance that you haven’t already purchased a sporty pair, we’ve rounded up some crowd-pleasing sneakers, especially in fresh, new colorways. Whether you go for a ‘70s-style Nike sneaker, or an ‘80s-style New Balance sneaker, you’ll have a pair of classic dunks in your shoe arsenal to slip on and complete your trendy, street style looks.

Coquette Sneakers

The coquette aesthetic has become mainstream — perhaps more than expected —  which has (luckily) made the whimsical style more attainable and wearable. This is especially true for footwear when brands like Gola collaborate with Anthropologie on satin ribbon-lace sneakers and when viral brands like JW Pei create “ballerina sneakers.” You’ll continue to see these fashionable-yet-functional sneakers, especially from designer brands like Rombaut and Jeffrey Campbell.

If a ballet sneaker is a bit too kitsch for you, consider cherry-picking other (more subtle) coquette details like vintage floral prints or lace materials, which you can start wearing now. Retailers like Nordstrom and Converse have unique sneakers that’ll do the job without hurting your wallet.

Autumnal Neutral Sneakers

A neutral sneaker will always be in style, but recently we’ve been seeing browns, beiges, creams, and khakis combined all in one pair. And the trend is even celebrity-approved. But the best part is that you can find these earthy shades in a range of styles via slim retro sneakers, chunky dad sneakers, and futuristic running sneakers.

While this will continue to be popular in the fall, keep a lookout for more unexpected neutrals from autumnal color palettes. We’ll transition from summer butter yellow to mustard, Brat green to forest, and bright red to burgundy.

All-Over Metallic Sneakers

Metallics like silver and gold have also solidified themselves as new neutrals that genuinely go with everything. Silver is one of the electrifying shades of 2024, and you’d be surprised to know that this year’s party shoes aren’t heels but, rather, shiny metallic sneakers. The glossy, lustrous shoe has been everywhere, from “elevated athleisure” standing out at NYFW runways (and recently at a Wales Bonner runway show where models wore silver-sequined Adidas sneakers) to being a concert must-have style.

All-over metallic (as opposed to shiny accents) will especially trend this fall, according to a viral TikTok video. We’ve also been seeing more options for metallic gold sneakers, that are thankfully more on-trend than the cringe styles from the aughts. Onitsuka Tiger’s yellow-and-black Kill Bill sneakers have been the comeback sneaker of summer 2024, but the brand also offers a gold iteration, which you should slip into this fall.

Mary Jane Sneakers

Whether they’re in the form of ballet flats, pumps, or sky-high platform heels, Mary Janes have been the standout shoe trend of 2024. And now, Mary Jane sneakers are a thing… astounding, we know! The strappy sneakers we’ve been seeing look more elevated than strap-on shoes and many offer some extra height, through chunky heels or flatform soles. Shoppers who don’t like dealing with fiddly shoelaces will also be delighted by the typical velcro straps.

While certain styles and colorways can certainly find themselves in the coquette sneaker category, there are also ones that look closer to chunky school-girl-type Mary Jane shoes. They’re basically the optimal work shoe since they look more professional than casual, and especially since you just know they’ll be more comfortable than a heel. Just pair your sneakers with a dress or equally comfy work pants, and take on the day.

Wedge & Platform Sneakers

Another height-boosting sneaker you’ll be seeing more of are platform sneakers. Platform shoes never really seem to go out of style, but they’re a contrast to the ultra-slim and streamlined sporty sneaker trend. However, brands are now offering their signature sneakers in chunkier platform iterations. This gives you the option to go classic or platform, while staying on-trend no matter what.

A more divisive sneaker trend you may also start seeing is the return of the mid-2010s wedge sneakers… and don’t hate on them just yet! A wedge is elevated in silhouette and will literally elevate your height, too, all while being ultra comfortable. Date-driven Instagram account @style.analytics noted that Isabel Marant’s wedge sneakers and wedge boots in particular are starting to reappear, so keep an eye out for these designer sneakers in chic leathers and suedes.
