26 Fall Jackets To Layer Up With In Cooler Weather

Fall weather has brought all her wardrobe favorites with her. In addition to cardigan sweaters and boots, there’s the transitional jacket, a beloved autumnal classic. Whether you want something to just throw on for a quick dog walk in the early morning or a more buttoned-up (excuse the pun) style for evening events, there’s a topper out there for everyone.

The best fall jackets (not to be confused with their heavier cousins, coats) are lightweight enough for layering when the temps aren't quite warm, but not yet cold — the Goldilocks of your seasonal closet, if you will. To provide a little shopping inspiration, we've gathered up our top picks, from leather jackets, sherpa, capes, anoraks, denim, and more.

All linked products are independently selected by our editors. If you purchase any of these products, we may earn a commission.

From fall dresses to winter wedding guest looks, Anthropologie is a go-to destination for occasion-worthy dressing. And now, for all the 2025 brides out there, the beloved retailer will truly be your one-stop shop because Anthropologie Weddings has just dropped its new collection of over 30 bridal dresses.

“We’re thrilled to unveil our new bridal drop where each gown embodies the essence of individuality and romance,” chief merchandising officer of apparel at Anthropologie, Holly Thrasher, told Refinery29. “Our latest assortment offers three unique design sensibilities that highlight new bridal trends and exclusive styles.”

The three bridal silhouettes and aesthetics are divided by classic ball gowns, modern styles, and trending drop-waist dresses — perfect to serve every bride and every aisle. The exclusive designs come from brands like Ouma, Mirror Palais, Sebastian Luke, and Costarellos, all ranging between $1,150 and $4,370. Read on to start perusing the new Anthropologie Weddings collection and to get style inspiration for your big day.

Anthropologie Wedding Dresses: Classic Ballgowns

“Our classic ballgowns celebrate the bride’s desire for a timeless moment while incorporating modern touches that make each gown uniquely her own,” Thrasher said. The collection includes over 10 voluminous styles that will help you make the grandest of entrances. From exaggerated lace and tulle skirts to ruffled taffeta skirts, these dresses offer a mix of classic and contemporary design elements for the more traditional brides. Bonus: Some styles come with matching gloves or scarves to complete your wedding look.

Anthropologie Wedding Dresses: Modern & Romantic Gowns

For the bride who doesn’t want to feel weighed down by too much fabric or volume, Anthropologie Weddings offers a selection of ethereal and vintage-inspired dresses. “Our modern and romantic gowns capture the spirit of today’s bride. Each design balances contemporary style with enchanting details,” Thrasher said. See: modern takes on corsetry, delicate embellishments, and dramatic overlays.

Anthropologie Wedding Dresses: Drop-Waist Gowns

If you’re a trendsetter looking for a timeless design that’ll stand out from the crowd, consider a drop-waist silhouette. “Drop-waist silhouette offers a fresh, flattering take on bridal fashion, allowing brides to embrace a beloved trend while exuding elegance,” Thrasher says. You can find the trending silhouette across the collection’s ball gowns, A-line dresses, and high-low styles.

That’s Hot: The Dress-Over-Pants Trend Is Back And Cooler Than Ever

.disclaimer{width:90%;margin-bottom:1rem}.disclaimer__lines{width:100%;margin:0 auto;border-bottom:1px solid #999;padding:0;max-width:150px}.disclaimer__copy{width:100%;max-width:355px;font-family:Brown Regular,sans-serif;font-size:.9rem;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3em;color:#333;padding:0 0 .4rem;margin:1rem auto;text-align:center}

We’ve reached the Y2K final boss: The dress-over-pants trend is bubbling under the surface with all the zest of an early 2000s Disney star.

The throwback trend — once a red carpet staple among young Hollywood — is getting a minimalist remix from brands like The Row, Hermès, and Boss, proving that the once-dated styling trick can be modern, chic, and grown-up. Now, it’s less about flouncy dresses over bootcut jeans (though, the Olsen twins did make a case for that), and more about longer hemlines and matching layers that fit into the current timeless-over-everything attitude in fashion.

While the look may be synonymous with the Kids Choice Awards, it dates back to the mid-19th century, when Amelia Jenks Bloomer and Elizabeth Cady Stanton would wear bloomer pants underneath calf-length dresses during the early Suffrage Movement, as an act of defiance against societal norms. It would eventually be embraced by the masses as a trend, arguably reaching its peak in the early 21st century.

It went away for a few decades, but Katie Holmes bravely dipped her toe into reviving dresses-over-pants at the 2022 iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Awards, donning a strapless blue dress from Tove over raw-hemmed blue jeans and a pair of New Balance sneakers. The look was met with backlash from the fashion set, but Holmes still stands by the style today, telling Drew Barrymore on her talk show that she “felt cool.”

Turns out, she was onto something: Not long after, it began appearing on the runway, and celebrities like Kendall Jenner started wearing dresses over pants more frequently.

The dresses-over-pants of 2024 put a greater emphasis on wearability and a streamlined look, giving it a more refined feel, especially for the cooler months. The Row’s pre-spring 2025 collection makes a case for slouchy pants with lacy dresses, even styled underneath sweaters — paired with flip flops, no less. The spring/summer 2025 collections are similarly infused with this intuitive layering and quirky girl-on-the-go aesthetic, seen at Rokh and Hermès in Paris: Long, tailored tops that emulate dresses with flared or tailored pants tastefully update the mismatched feel of the early 2000s outfit combination.

At Boss’s spring/summer 2025 show, models donned draped gowns over slacks and sprinkled the layering trick into office wear with mini-skirts worn over trousers. At the Garment, during Copenhagen Fashion Week, airy tailored slacks and sheer styles link up in a summer-y Scandi take on the once-kitschy trend.

“I think it adds a unique and interesting proportion to your outfit while still creating an elegance to your look,” says Kenzie Welch, a personal stylist and wardrobe consultant. However, she “can see how some may find it intimidating.” For those who aren’t sure where to start, she recommends opting for a tunic top: “It’s not too long, but still gives you the look. I also love the idea of shirt dresses or even using skirts — like a pleated option — to pair with trousers.”

To avoid the casualness of the 2000s, stylist Coco Schiffer suggests dressing it up as much as possible, with matching options from brands like St. Agni. The long strapless wool tunic paired with the gray matching pants feels like the 2024 version of wearing a blazer and mini skirt out to the club.

“The more everyday wear can get sloppy or a bit too conservative quickly, so I’d try mixing monochrome color palettes with skin showing either around collar bones with an off-shoulder neckline or ankles with a pump,” she says.

East-West Bags Are The Latest Y2K Comeback Trend

.disclaimer{width:90%;margin-bottom:1rem}.disclaimer__lines{width:100%;margin:0 auto;border-bottom:1px solid #999;padding:0;max-width:150px}.disclaimer__copy{width:100%;max-width:355px;font-family:Brown Regular,sans-serif;font-size:.9rem;font-weight:300;line-height:1.3em;color:#333;padding:0 0 .4rem;margin:1rem auto;text-align:center}

At this point you can assume every trend from the 2000s will have its day in the sun — but even amid this ongoing revival, the east-west bag shows potential for much longer staying power. Pun intended.

Defined by its sleek, oblong shape and ultra functionality, the silhouette really gained traction in 2004 when Jean Paul Gaultier introduced an elongated Birkin at his first show as creative director of Hermès. (It’s referred to as the JPG  Shoulder Birkin.) At the time, the Fendi Baguette was at its peak, thanks to an endorsement from one Carrie Bradshaw a few years after its debut. However, as the decade went on, oversized statement bags pushed these more minimal styles to the side — until quiet luxury came along and conquered fashion.

Last year, Hermès smartly capitalized on this shift by rereleasing its trendsetting east-west Birkin for spring/summer 2024. A slew of horizontal styles followed, from Alaïa’s Le Teckel to Khaite’s Simona to Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo riff on the silhouette.

As a result, luxury resale destinations have seen a significant uptick in interest for pre-loved originals. On eBay, searches for the silhouette have increased globally by 150% this year. In its annual resale report, released earlier this month, Fashionphile reports that searches for Chanel east-west bags increased by 333%, while sales of Louis Vuitton east-west bags went up by 142% this past year.

“The bag appeals to consumers looking for a piece that transitions easily between casual and formal settings,” Landyn Tedrick, Fashionphile’s site merchandising specialist, tells Refinery29. “This versatility, along with its sleek and minimalist aesthetic, has made it a favorite among our younger consumers.” (Tedrick identifies Fendi’s Baguette as “the east-west bag’s biggest competitor within the luxury resale market” as “both bags offer sleek, compact designs perfect for transitioning between day and night, and both have experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks to the revival of early 2000s fashion and celebrity endorsements.”)

@re.tyche New summer bag trend coming from a luxury buyer ✨ #eastwest #designerbags #summertrends #fashiontiktok #therow ♬ LoFi Chill Hip-Hop 07 – Aleksei Gorobetc

The east-west silhouette is a happy medium between two dueling styles: the micro mini and the more-is-more shoulder bag (think: Jacquemus’ micro Le Chiquito and Balenciaga’s maximalist Cagole). Over on #handbagtiktok, savvy creators like @re.tyche and @celesta have praised its versatility.

The trend isn’t going anywhere in the new year. For spring/summer 2025, Jil Sander brought out embellished versions, while Louis Vuitton offered a strappy, vintage-inspired iteration. The endorsement of It Girls like Kendall Jenner, Ayo Edebiri and Sofia Richie Grainge doesn’t hurt, either.

If you’re shopping for your first east-west, we’d point you to The Row’s Abby and Savette’s Symmetry Pochette, which serve quiet luxury realness with their minimalist detailing. Magda Butrym’s Brigitte Trapeze packs a subtle statement with its floral embellishments, while the bamboo top handle on Jil Sander’s Goji is a structural dream. @Celesta’s favorite east-west bags are her Dior Lady D-Joy and two Freja New York styles: the Caroline and the Chrystie.

When it comes to finding the perfect handbag for you, a little bit of research will go a long way. From the silhouette’s easy styling to its various price points, the east-west bag makes a major case for becoming your next wardrobe staple.
