From Gretchen Wieners’ Comeback To Dua Lipa’s New Movie, Argyle Is Having A Moment

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

You heard it here first: Argyle pattern is back, baby. If we say plaid is the equivalent of a preppy schoolgirl, argyle is her sweet grandfather. And with “eclectic grandpa” trending on TikTok, we’re more than ready to bid adieu to “coastal grandma” in honor of something a bit cozier for winter. Need more proof? We’re predicting “Old Boys’ Club” clothing will become popular this year after Copenhagen Fashion Week.

You can find argyle in plenty of other entertainment and pop culture moments. Notably, the OG Mean Girls movie features Gretchen Wieners (played by Lacey Chabert), who wears several (now-iconic) argyle print sweaters and an argyle-meets-plaid mini skirt as her high school attire. The 2024 Mean Girls film pays tribute to the original costumes through Gretchen (now played by Bebe Wood) wearing a modern argyle-adjacent sweater vest when first meeting Cady.

Plus, Dua Lipa’s and Bryce Dallas Howard’s new film Argylle of course references the diamond print. The film, which releases February 2, features Alfie the cat (played by supermodel Claudia Schiffer’s real cat Chip), who gets carried around in an argyle print backpack. The cat and his nerdy chic carrier even found their way onto the film’s London premiere red carpet. Schiffer carried the argyle backpack… while wearing a vintage lace and argyle-inspired Versace gown… while standing in front of an argyle pattern backdrop. It’s a lot, we know!

To celebrate the official return of argyle, we found the best clothing and accessories (from cardigans, mini skirts, and winter coats to scarves, socks, and handbags) to celebrate the grandpa chic sensation. You’ll even find pops of 2024 trending colors like midnight blue, orange creamsicle, and citron zest throughout if you dare to wear the traditional print in a bright, fun color.

Argyle Sweaters, Skirts & Dresses

While we’re enamored by “grandpa core” and all of the frumpy, oversized sweaters, we were interested in sourcing argyle clothing that looks more modern. Whether you want to go all in and wear a matching argyle skirt set or play it a bit more safe (and traditional) with a crewneck sweater, there’s something for everyone.

Go bold with a large argyle print in a fun color (see the lilac and yellow sweaters below) or a bit more subtle with a smaller, more monochromatic print (like the pleated skirt and collared dress). And don’t think argyle is only intended to be worn in formal situations. You can sport the print in your activewear for a game of tennis or a hot girl walk, too.

Argyle Cardigans

Argyle cardigans simply needed their own section because there are so many of them on the market. They’re the ultimate preppy pick. But we think these cardigans can look more chic than nerdy if you know where to look.

For a long, oversized cardigan style, consider a large-and-in-charge argyle pattern that makes a real statement. And for a cropped fitted cardigan style, look out for pops of color and elevated details like pearl buttons and puff shoulders for a unique touch.

Argyle Outerwear

Are you in search of a trendy statement coat that can be the focal point of all your winter outfits? Argyle is the answer! Coats with wrap details just made their mark at Copenhagen Fashion Week, so we included a diamond-printed dress coat below and a bold belted puffer jacket above to take on the timeless trend. There are also casual outerwear options, like cozy zip-up sweaters and fleece jackets that you can test the argyle waters with.

Argyle pattern seems to be more prominent across menswear, so don’t be afraid to venture there, especially for outerwear that can be oversized and relaxed (without looking too frumpy). For example, we think the J.Crew argyle jacket below would look great on anyone.

Argyle Accessories

If you don’t want to commit to argyle clothing just yet, consider adding the pattern into your wardrobe through smaller-scale accessories. These can be bold and colorful (like these top-handle bags) or as subtle and neutral (like hair accessories) as you’d like.

You can find many soft accessories like socks, scarves, and beanies available in argyle patterns with playful color combinations. (That means you don’t have to steal your father’s argyle dress socks!) Bows are trending, so of course we had to add an adorable argyle bow hair clip into the mix. And while colored tights are also on-trend for 2024, we think a pair of argyle tights could be an extra quirky (librarian-chic) swap.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Trends That Will Get You Excited For Fall 2024

Before fashion month officially kicks off in New York next week, every minimalist-loving cool girl’s favorite lineup, Copenhagen Fashion Week fall 2024, gave shoppers a hint at what’s in store come autumn. As expected for the cold-weather season, there were some covetable coats that came down the runways of Scandi favorites like Saks Potts, Remain, Baum und Pferdgarten, and Stine Goya. But statement outerwear isn’t the only fashion trend we should expect to see six months from now.

Soft fabrics, enveloping silhouettes, layered styling, and oversized scarves will guarantee plenty of cozy autumn fashion that looks as if it’s pulled straight from the set of a Nancy Meyers movie. In terms of color, while shades of red and various pinks will continue to be popular this year, there will be more muted hues in time for the fall foliage season. Ahead, the fashion trends from the fall 2024 collections of Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Trend Fall 2024: Denim Sets

James Cochrane

Blame it on Americana (once again) coming back into fashion or our general penchant for casual wear since the pandemic, but denim-on-denim looks continue to strut their way down the runways. Munthe’s new collection, inspired by the brand’s creative director-founder Naja Munthe’s love of horses, featured denim shirts, suits, and skirts. Meanwhile, Gestuz offered a ’70s-inspired take on a Canadian tuxedo and Marimekko served a spring version of a matching jean set that was adorned with flower prints.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Trend Fall 2024: The Color Brown

James Cochrane

From latte and caramel to chocolate, warm brown colors marked the runways of brands ranging from Stine Goya to Wood Wood. If a pantsuit or dress in the fall-approved hue isn’t in your repertoire, brands like OpéraSport made a case for using just a pop of the shade in the form of a Mob Wife aesthetic-approved faux fur shawl worn over a black coat. Personally, though, our eyes are on the cow-print coat seen at Saks Potts.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Trend Fall 2024: Old Boys’ Club

James Cochrane

This season, the womenswear collections borrowed from the boys. But rather than embrace the youthful or preppy fashions, it was the old boys’ club that the designers had their eyes on, with brands like The Garment featuring ties paired with grandpa knits and wool pants. On the other end of the style spectrum, Mark Kenly Domino Tan sent out models in impeccably designed tuxedos featuring cummerbunds.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Trend Fall 2024: Brooches

James Cochrane

Grandmothers were also given their due, with brooch-like details appearing in the form of modern embellishments that adorned a blazer and held together a scarf at Skall Studio, and decorated a dress and matching skirt set at Aeron. At Mark Kenly Domino Tan Studio, more subtle gold pins that could double as jewelry dressed up turtleneck sweaters.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Trend Fall 2024: Coats with Wrap Details

James Cochrane

If we had to pick one trend that summarized Copenhagen Fashion Week this season, it would be outerwear with wrapped and draped detailing. Lovechild 1979’s new collections showcased elegant trenches that wound around the models’ bodies like a fabric hug, while The Garment presented coats with built-in scarves and capelets. For a less traditional alternative to the layered look, see Aeron where sweaters were styled as scarves and worn over sweaters in matching hues.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Trend Fall 2024: Peplum

James Cochrane

We’re back in the 2010s, fashion-wise. For proof, see the peplum pieces in the fall collections. But these aren’t the retro peplums that you may remember from your youth. Rotate’s eveningwear take included a plunging top with rosettes at the shoulder. Meanwhile, Won Hundred featured a strapless, cropped top with an interesting denim waistline detailing at the collarbone; Helmstead offered a tulle peplum blouse featuring a tree bark-inspired print; Nicklas Skovgaard presented a shirt with asymmetrical peplum detailing; and Henrik Vibskov sent out a sculptural piece that one would have a hard time sitting in.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Trend Fall 2024: Skirt Over Pants

But just because 2010s fashion is trending doesn’t mean that Y2K fashion’s hold is quite over yet, with the skirt-over-pants trend also stealing the spotlight. Ganni’s new collection had a structured three-piece suit in a metallic colorway (a trend that also doesn’t seem to be heading out the door anytime soon), Mfpen’s womenswear debuted featured a business-core mini skirt worn over jeans and a white shirt, and Paolina Russo playfully paired a pleated skirt with sweatpants.

Copenhagen Fashion Week Trend Fall 2024: Oversized Clutches

In terms of accessories, so-big-you-can-hardly-clutch-them clutches were toted by models at the Baum und Pferdgarten, Forza Collective, and Remain. While the handbag trend makes an impact on the runway thanks to the oversized shape (and bold colors, too), in real life, you can recreate the look in a more practical manner by opting for totes that you can fold into clutches only when necessary.

Take A Sneak Peek At Abercrombie & Fitch’s Presidents Day Sale

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission

If you consider yourself something of a deal expert, you likely know that Presidents’ Day Sales offer some of the steepest discounts on clothing and accessories — and Abercrombie has one of the best sales to shop this month. Trust us, when a reader-favorite retailer discounts nearly everything, even new seasonal arrivals, we pay attention.

Now, the downside: a sale where almost everything is discounted is a lot to take in and requires time sifting through the selections. That’s where we come in. Whether you’re freshening up your wardrobe staples for the year or on the hunt for the latest jeans, we’ve picked only the crème de la crème from outerwear to dresses to athleisure, and everything in between. Allow us to help kickstart your Abercrombie & Fitch shopping extravaganza, and don’t forget to check back for the hefty discounts to come.

Abercrombie & Fitch Outerwear

Since the weather is still nippy, there’s no time like the present to spruce up your outerwear collection with a heavyweight blazer or a new cozy coat or jacket. The fact that they’re deeply discounted right now? Icing on the cake.

Abercrombie & Fitch Tops

Are you in desperate need of a new button-up shirt or breezy bodysuit? Maybe an elevated V-neck sweater? Find some of the most elevated staples within A&F’s sale section and watch your everyday ‘fits significantly improve in style.

Abercrombie & Fitch Jeans

We’re keen to shop any Abercrombie & Fitch sale — but even more so when those discounts apply to the brand’s bestselling jeans. Since A&F revamped its aesthetic a few years back, it’s become our go-to destination for early aughts denim styles like ’90s-inspired baggy jeans and straight-leg styles.

Abercrombie & Fitch Dresses & Jumpsuits

Wedding season will be upon us before you know it, and you’ll want to be ready with an array of stylish wedding guest dresses and jumpsuits before those save-the-dates hit your mailbox. In the meantime, you can wear any of these flirty options for date night, upcoming spring break vacays, or work events.

Abercrombie & Fitch Athleisure Wear

Find your new holy grail athleisure wear amongst the brand’s stylish workout shorts, crewnecks, and colorful flared leggings to mix and match with. If you’re anything like us, we always look for more comfy styles to add to our most-worn collection.

What To Wear To Copenhagen Fashion Week, According To An Editor

On Monday, the fall 2024 runway showcases kicked off with Copenhagen Fashion Week. But while the catwalks dictate what trends shoppers will wear six months from now, the street style outside the shows sees fashion-minded locals and visitors parading in what’s hot right now. Personally, I’ve always loved the fashion looks coming from the Danish capital for their unabashed embrace of color (even in the dead of winter) and Scandi style. So, when attending this season, I borrowed outfit ideas from past attendees and brought out my brightest clothing and accessories, as well as peppered in more trending styles like business-core essentials, denim-on-denim, and metallic silvers. Ahead, what I wore to Copenhagen Fashion Week.

All linked products are independently selected by our editors. If you purchase any of these products, we may earn a commission.

What To Wear To Copenhagen Fashion Week: Leather Jacket

Outerwear is essential for any fall fashion week (the shows for which take place from late January to early March) — and particularly in Copenhagen, where temperatures hover around 30 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and drop significantly as soon as the sun goes down in the winter months. To contrast the sometimes-overcast weather, I leaned on colorful jackets and coats this visit, like this menswear-inspired Nanushka jacket (that has since sold out in the blue colorway), paired with a skirt in an on-trend metallic, a bag in a fun pattern, and knee-high boots.

What To Wear To Copenhagen Fashion Week: Pantsuit

Pantsuits are my go-to look when working during fashion week. Not only are they comfortable — especially when it’s an oversized fit like this one, from everyone’s favorite Danish brand, Ganni — but they’re versatile enough to go from a day of running to and from shows in sneakers to a night out when paired with a sling-back heel. In terms of handbags, I typically opt for crossbody bags to keep my hands free (aka available to hold my phone to film show looks and answer emails on the go); while in Copenhagen, I’ve been renting this Virgil Abloh-designed Louis Vuitton bag from Vivrelle to see if I want to invest in the brand’s Soft Trunk bag on the secondhand market.

What To Wear To Copenhagen Fashion Week: Outerwear

Another example of bright outerwear doing all the outfit work for you, this plaid jacket from popular Danish brand Baum und Pferdgarten provided a boost of serotonin on a gloomy day, especially when paired with equally fun jeans with a crystal fringe hem, a feather-cuffed button-down (worn underneath the jacket), and a bright bag. To give my summer shoes another life in the winter, I wear them over patterned socks (which I got in between shows at a local accessories shop Pico), as seen with these Mary Janes.

What To Wear To Copenhagen Fashion Week: Denim

Similarly to pantsuits, I reach for matching sets when I need a foolproof look (or when I wake up late). To avoid looking too business-core all week (see: the Ganni pantsuit), I picked a two-piece set in a casual denim fabrication. This look is the perfect balance of casual and cool, with a jean jacket featuring high shoulders and a maxi skirt with studded detailing — one of my favorite looks from Gestuz’s spring 2024 runway — paired with my run-all-day-in loafers.
